The impact of breast density notification on psychosocial outcomes in racial and ethnic minorities: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: High breast density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer and decreases the sensitivity of mammography. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence on the impact of breast density (BD) information and/or notification on women's psychosocial outcomes among women from racial and ethnic minority groups. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in March 2023, and the articles were identified using CINHAL, Embase, Medline, and PsychInfo databases. The search strategy combined the terms "breast", "density", "notification" and synonyms. The authors specifically kept the s…

Associations of Breast Density With Demographic, Reproductive, and Lifestyle Factors in a Developing Southeast Asian Population.

The aim of this study was to investigate how breast density interacted with demographic, reproductive, and lifestyle features among Vietnamese women. Mammographic density and established risk factors for breast cancer were collected from 1651 women (345 cancer cases and 1306 normal cases) in Vietnam. The association of breast density categories with potential risk factors was investigated using Spearman's test for continuous variables and χ2 tests for categorical variables. Independent factors associated with high breast density and breast cancer in specific density groupings were assessed usi…

Mammographic density and breast cancer risk by family history in women of white and Asian ancestry.

PURPOSE: Mammographic density, i.e., the radiographic appearance of the breast, is a strong predictor of breast cancer risk. To determine whether the association of breast density with breast cancer is modified by a first-degree family history of breast cancer (FHBC) in women of white and Asian ancestry, we analyzed data from four case-control studies conducted in the USA and Japan. METHODS: The study population included 1,699 breast cancer cases and 2,422 controls, of whom 45% reported white (N = 1,849) and 40% Asian (N = 1,633) ancestry. To standardize mammographic density assessment, a sin…

Body fatness during childhood and adolescence and breast density in young women: a prospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence are associated with reduced breast cancer risk, independent of adult body mass index (BMI). These associations may be mediated through breast density. METHODS: We prospectively examined associations of early life body fatness with adult breast density measured by MRI in 182 women in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children (DISC) who were ages 25-29 at follow-up. Height, weight, and other factors were measured at baseline (ages 8-10) and annual clinic visits through adolescence. We used linear mixed-effects models to quantify…

Relationship of Terminal Duct Lobular Unit Involution of the Breast with Area and Volume Mammographic Densities.

Elevated mammographic density (MD) is an established breast cancer risk factor. Reduced involution of terminal duct lobular units (TDLU), the histologic source of most breast cancers, has been associated with higher MD and breast cancer risk. We investigated relationships of TDLU involution with area and volumetric MD, measured throughout the breast and surrounding biopsy targets (perilesional). Three measures inversely related to TDLU involution (TDLU count/mm(2), median TDLU span, median acini count/TDLU) assessed in benign diagnostic biopsies from 348 women, ages 40-65, were related to MD a

Cross-sectional study to assess the association of population density with predicted breast cancer risk.

The Gail and CARE models estimate breast cancer risk for white and African-American (AA) women, respectively. The aims of this study were to compare metropolitan and nonmetropolitan women with respect to predicted breast cancer risks based on known risk factors, and to determine if population density was an independent risk factor for breast cancer risk. A cross-sectional survey was completed by 15,582 women between 35 and 85 years of age with no history of breast cancer. Metropolitan and nonmetropolitan women were compared with respect to risk factors, and breast cancer risk estimates, using

Physical activity and mammographic breast density in a Mediterranean population: the EPIC Florence longitudinal study.

A protective effect of physical activity (PA) on breast cancer (BC) risk has been suggested. Few studies have examined the influence of PA on mammographic breast density (MBD), a strong risk factor for BC. In a prospective study in Florence, Italy, we identified 2,000 healthy women with a mammogram taken 5 years after enrollment. Individual mammograms were retrieved (83%) and MBD assessed according to Wolfe's classification. Detailed information on PA at work and during leisure time, reproductive history, lifestyle and anthropometric measurements at enrollment were available for 1,666 women. I…

Higher perfusion among breast malignant tumors than among breast benign lesions as demonstrated by diffusion-derived 'vessel density' (DDVD): a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The biomarker diffusion-derived 'vessel density' (DDVD) works on the principle that small blood vessels show high signal when there is no motion probing gradient (b=0 s/mm2) and low signal when even very low b-values diffusion gradients are applied. This study explores whether there is a DDVD pattern difference between malignant tumor (MT) and benign lesion (BL) of the breast. METHODS: Hospital 1 (Peking University Shenzhen Hospital) enrolled 17 cases including 15 MTs (among them 5 were post-treatment) and 2 BLs. Hospital 2 (Longgang District Maternity & Child Healthcare Hospital

Quantitative measurement of mammographic density in breast-tissue explants using portable NMR: Precision and accuracy.

PURPOSE: Single-sided portable NMR (pNMR) has previously been demonstrated to be suitable for quantification of mammographic density (MD) in excised breast tissue samples. Here we investigate the precision and accuracy of pNMR measurements of MD ex vivo as compared with the gold standards. METHODS: Forty-five breast-tissue explants from 9 prophylactic mastectomy patients were measured. The relative tissue water content was taken as the MD-equivalent quantity. In each sample, the water content was measured using some combination of three pNMR techniques (apparent T2, diffusion, and T1 measurem

Association between mammographic density and tumor marker-defined breast cancer subtypes: a case-control study.

High mammographic density (MD) is the most important risk factor for breast cancer. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between MD and breast cancer subtypes defined by tumor markers. We enrolled 642 women with breast cancer (69% premenopausal) and 1241 controls matched for age and menopausal status. Absolute mammographic dense area (ADA), percent mammographic dense area (PDA), and nondense area were assessed using a computer-assisted thresholding technique. We classified breast cancer cases into four subtypes using information on tumor marker expression such as estrogen receptor (ER)

Does mammographic density mediate risk factor associations with breast cancer? An analysis by tumor characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Though mammographic density (MD) has been proposed as an intermediate marker of breast cancer risk, few studies have examined whether the associations between breast cancer risk factors and risk are mediated by MD, particularly by tumor characteristics. METHODS: Our study population included 3392 cases (1105 premenopausal) and 8882 (3192 premenopausal) controls from four case-control studies. For established risk factors, we estimated the percent of the total risk factor association with breast cancer that was mediated by percent MD (secondarily, by dense area and non-dense area)
