Infection of a bronchogenic cyst after ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration.

Standard recommendation for therapy of benign mediastinal cysts is surgery. Endobronchial ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EBUS-FNA) has been used by some researchers as a diagnostic tool. This approach may be associated with severe life-threatening complications. We describe a case of life-threatening purulent pericardial effusion with tamponade by infection of a bronchogenic cyst after EBUS-FNA.

Total occlusion of the superior vena cava due to bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts are the most common form of congenital cystic lesions in the mediastinum. Of all cases with bronchogenic cysts, 1/3 are symptomatic. The symptoms vary depending on the location and compression of the adjacent structures of the cyst. Some mediastinal bronchogenic cysts can cause severe respiratory distress due to airway and vascular compression. We herein present a case with a bronchogenic cyst that required venoplasty to the superior vena cava (SVC) due to total occlusion of the SVC.

Gastric bronchogenic cyst diagnosed by endosonographically guided fine needle aspiration biopsy.

We report a case of a gastric bronchogenic cyst diagnosed via endosonographically guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) biopsy. A 60-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) examination because of a gastric subepithelial lesion detected by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. EUS examination revealed a lesion that appeared to originate from the gastric submucosa but seemed to extend beyond the gastric wall. The latter finding raised concerns that the lesion might represent a cystic neoplasm rather than a simple cyst. Subsequently, EUS-FNA was performed to e…

Malignant melanoma arising from cutaneous bronchogenic cyst of the scapular area.

Bronchogenic cyst, an uncommon developmental anomaly that originates from the primitive tracheobronchial tree, is rare in the skin. The shoulder region is a particularly rare location. We report a 46-year-old Japanese man with recurrent malignant melanoma that arose from such a cutaneous bronchogenic cyst in the left scapular area. Despite wide local excision and subsequent chemotherapy, he died 18 months after surgery of the melanoma because of its lung metastasis. This is the first case of bronchogenic cyst in which malignant melanoma occurred.

Imaging Findings and Misdiagnosis of Bronchogenic Cysts: A Study of 83 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: We characterize computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of bronchogenic cysts (BCs) and analyze misdiagnosis. METHODS: The retrospective study consisted of 83 patients with BCs. CT and MRI images were assessed for mass location, maximum diameter, density, calcification, signal intensity, and enhancement pattern. Eighty-three patients underwent plain CT in which 53 underwent enhanced CT. Thirteen patients received both plain and enhanced MR, and only one received just a plain MR. RESULTS: Eighty-three masses were all solitary, with 71 having a roundis…

Spindle-cell thymoma colliding with a bronchogenic cyst in a Yorkshire terrier.

An 8-year-old male Yorkshire terrier was presented to the Tufts Veterinary Hospital for evaluation of increased respiratory effort. A mediastinal mass composed of a spindle-cell thymoma within a bronchogenic cyst was diagnosed with computed tomography thoracic imaging, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate biopsy, and histopathologic evaluation after surgical removal. Histologic evaluation showed a multilocular cyst structure as well as a mass characterized by spindle to polygonal thymic epithelial cells. The cyst was characterized by a lining of ciliated pseudostratified respiratory epitheli…

[A Case of Retroperitoneal Bronchogenic Cyst Diagnosed by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization].

A 50-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for consultation for a suspected left adrenal tumor detected by ultrasonography during a health check. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 4.7×3.4 cm tumor in the retroperitoneal space near the adrenal gland. The patient subsequently underwent laparoscopic tumor resection. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the resected tumor was diagnosed as a retroperitoneal bronchial cyst. Here we present a case of a definitive diagnosis of a retroperitoneal bronchial cyst using FISH, and review the cases of retroperito

Case report: The safety of laparoscopic surgery for the retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital aberration of bronchopulmonary malformation with bronchial-type, pseudostratified cylindrical epithelium. They are usually discovered in the mediastinum and intrapulmonary but are rarely encountered in retroperitoneum. We report a case of the retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst and perform a literature review to summarize the safety of laparoscopic resection for this rare disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 57-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with no clinical symptoms and was found by chance to have masses in the adrenal gland a…

Intramural bronchogenic cysts of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction: A case report.

Bronchogenic cyst is a relatively rare congenital malformation that is often identified in the mediastinum. The occurrence of bronchogenic cysts in the intramural esophagus and gastroesophageal junction is rare. The present report describes three cases of intramural bronchogenic cysts of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction and reviews the clinicopathological features of these lesions. A 35-year-old Japanese male (Case 1), a 50-year-old Japanese woman (Case 2) and a 34-year-old Japanese man (Case 3) presented with dysphagia, pharyngeal pain and heartburn, respectively. Upper endoscopic …

[Bronchogenic Cyst with Rapid Increase and Emergency Operation;Report of a Case].

A 21-year-old man was admitted with fever and back pain. Chest computed tomography(CT) showed a cystic mass of 7×6 cm in the right middle mediastinum. After 3 days, symptoms worsen, and chest X-ray revealed the enlargement of the cyst, and an emergent operation was performed. Since the tumor was severely adhered to the superior vena cava and the azygous vein, the cystic mass was partially resected. The pathological diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst.

[Independent Occurrence of a Mediastinal Bronchogenic Cyst and an Intralobar Pulmonary Sequestration].

Here we describe a case of an 18-year-old boy who exhibited abnormal pulmonary parenchyma supplied by an aberrant artery from the descending aorta in the right lower lobe of the lung and a cystic tumor measuring 34×26×54 mm in the right upper mediastinum. Video-assisted thoracic surgery for resection of the 2 lesions showed that they were independent of each other. Final diagnosis of an intralobar pulmonary sequestration in the right lower lobe and a bronchogenic cyst in the upper mediastinum was made. In some reports, 2 lesions were described to be in close proximity to and connected with eac…

Resection of a bronchogenic cyst in the first decade of life with robotic surgery.

The conventional surgical approach for the removal of bronchogenic cyst in children is thoracotomy. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is still under debate with the concerns of incomplete removal and injury to major intrathoracic structures. In this case report, we present an 8-year old patient who was successfully treated with robotic surgery (Intuitive Surgical, Mountain View, CA, USA). Robotic technology enables precise dissection and complete resection of the thoracic bronchogenic cyst without violating the capsule and adjacent major intrathoracic structures. She was discharged on posto…

Differences in the distribution and presentation of bronchogenic cysts between adults and children.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations that occur in adults and children, with differences in distribution and presentation. METHODS: The study population comprised 16 infants and children (aged 7 days to 18 years) and 23 adults (aged 20-78 years) who received pathological diagnoses of bronchogenic cysts over a 14-year period (1999-2012). Cyst distribution and presentation were reviewed. RESULTS: Half (8/16) of the infants and children presented with palpable masses in the neck (n=6) or on the skin (n=2), and only one (12.5%) presented with symptoms of mild stridor.…
