Shoulder arthrodesis using a vascularized scapular pillar graft: Cadaver study and surgical technique.

INTRODUCTION: Whether secondary to trauma, infection or tumor invasion, a complex reconstruction procedure is required after proximal humerus resection. Among the reconstruction options, there are few published reports of a vascularized scapular pillar graft being used. The goal of our study was to describe the surgical technique for shoulder arthrodesis using a vascularized scapular pillar based on an anatomical study of this graft. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This anatomical and surgical study involved both shoulders from seven separate cadavers (14 shoulders). Two shoulders were used for trials…

Erector spinae plane block: A cadaver study to determine its mechanism of action.

INTRODUCTION: The erector spinae plane (ESP) block is a novel technique for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Its mechanism and site of action has not yet been explained properly. OBJECTIVES: In order to explain the mechanism of action of the ESP block, injections were performed with methylene blue to simulate the local anaesthetics and to determine its distribution from the anterior side of the thorax. To find an aperture or channel through which the local anaesthetic passes from posterior to anterior through the muscular and bone structures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four spinal column

Suture-Button Device Stabilization Following Ring Finger Ray Amputation: A Comparative Cadaver Study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether placing the suture-button device between the long and small finger metacarpals following ring finger ray amputation may better close the intermetacarpal gap and allow early range of motion without increasing the risk of malrotation than soft tissue repair alone. METHODS: We performed ray amputation of the ring finger of 14 cadaver specimens by performing an osteotomy of the base of the ring finger metacarpal and then excising the remainder of the digit. We first performed a soft tissue repair of the transverse metacarpal ligaments…

Detailed description of the anterior cerebral artery anomalies observed in a cadaver population.

Anomalies of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) include the median ACA (MedACA), bihemispheric ACA (BihemACA) and the azygos ACA. Knowledge of these anomalies can be crucial to clinicians and neurosurgeons, especially during surgeries involving the interhemispheric region and in the interpretation of the clinical signs of a stroke. Since few reports exist on the origin, area supplied, diameter and length of the ACA anomalies, the aim of this study is to give a detailed description on the anatomy of the ACA anomalies. The ACAs of 60 brains were injected with a colored silicone. When an anomaly

Splenorenal shunt via magnetic compression technique: a feasibility study in canine and cadaver.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of magnetic compression technique (MCT) has been accepted by surgeons to solve a variety of surgical problems. In this study, we attempted to explore the feasibility of a splenorenal shunt using MCT in canine and cadaver. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The diameters of the splenic vein (SV), the left renal vein (LRV), and the vertical interval between them, were measured in computer tomography (CT) images obtained from 30 patients with portal hypertension and in 20 adult cadavers. The magnetic devices used for the splenorenal shunt were then manufactured based on the anatomic…

Risk of sural nerve injury during lateral distal Achilles tendinoscopy: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: The risk of damage to cutaneous sensory nerves located near portals has been evaluated for both conventional arthroscopy and extra-articular posterior ankle endoscopy. The objective of the anatomic study reported here was to assess the risk of injury to the sural nerve or lateral calcaneal nerve while using the distal lateral portal for the Achilles tendinoscopy procedure described by Vega et al. in 2008. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We dissected the sural nerve and its branch, the lateral calcaneal nerve, of 13 human cadaver ankles in the prone position. We defined P as the point where…

Structures at Risk During Volar Percutaneous Fixation of Scaphoid Fractures: A Cadaver Study.

BACKGROUND: Fracture of the scaphoid bone can be treated with cast immobilization or surgery. Historically, surgery was reserved for displaced fractures. However, because weeks of cast immobilization may result in stiffness, loss of strength, loss of bone density and an inability to work or participate in recreational activities for a prolonged period, operative treatment of non-displaced fractures has become increasingly common. Several surgical techniques for fixation have been described, but their risks and benefits have not yet been clearly elucidated. In a study in cadavers, we investigat…

Glenohumeral joint motion after subscapularis tendon repair: an analysis of cadaver shoulder models.

BACKGROUND: As for the surgical treatment of the rotator cuff tears, the subscapularis tendon tears have recently received much attention for the mini-open or arthroscopic repair. The results of surgical repair for the subscapularis tendon tear are satisfactory, but the range of external rotation is reported to be restricted after the repair. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the range of glenohumeral joint motion after repairs of various sizes of subscapularis tendon tears. METHODS: Using eight fresh frozen human cadaveric shoulders (mean age at death, 81.5 years), three sizes of sub…

The effect of humerus diaphyseal shortening on brachial plexus tension: a cadaver study.

PURPOSE: To assess the extent to which diaphyseal shortening of the humerus can allow direct suture in case of rupture or transection injuries of the brachial plexus. METHODS: The use of 3 fresh cadaver specimens allowed for the study of 6 brachial plexuses. Distance measurements were made between reference points placed on the clavicle and on different parts of the plexus. Those measurements were repeated after shortening the humerus by 2, 4, and 6 cm. RESULTS: None of the dissected plexuses had classic anatomy. A humeral shortening of 6 cm allowed for a statistically significant reduction …

Innervation and histology of the clitoral-urethal complex: a cross-sectional cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite its central role in sexual function, we lack a description of the nerve distribution and histology for the central components of the clitoris. AIM: This study aims to characterize microscopic anatomy of the clitoral-urethral complex (CUC) and aid our understanding of sexual sensation METHODS: The CUC was excised from three female fresh-frozen cadavers en bloc and prepared in 5-μm longitudinal sections with hematoxylin and eosin and S100 immunohistochemistry for neural elements. Approximately 20 sections were obtained from each specimen. On low power microscopy, the 30 m…

Comparison of endoscopic techniques designed for posterior glottic stenosis--a cadaver morphometric study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Posterior glottic stenosis may cause more or less severe dyspnea. The popular endoscopic procedures have only a limited role in the treatment. Considering our clinical experiences, endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy (EAAL) after proper mobilization of the fixed joints provides an effective option even in high-grade stenoses. STUDY DESIGN: To confirm these clinical observations, a morphometric study was performed in 100 cadaver larynges (50 male, 50 female) to objectively compare the endoscopic glottis-widening procedures. METHODS: The postoperative measurements …

Eversion during external rotation of the human cadaver foot produces high ankle sprains.

While high ankle sprains are often clinically ascribed to excessive external foot rotation, no experimental study documents isolated anterior tibiofibular ligament (ATiFL) injury under this loading. We hypothesized that external rotation of a highly everted foot would generate ATiFL injury, in contrast to deltoid ligament injury from external rotation of a neutral foot. Twelve (six pairs) male cadaveric lower extremity limbs underwent external foot rotation until gross failure. All limbs were positioned in 20° of dorsiflexion and restrained with elastic athletic tape. Right limbs were in neutr…

Eyelid eversion for visualisation of the upper eyelid lamellae: an anatomical cadaver study.

Controversy persists in surgical eyelid anatomy despite the routine use of microanatomical examination in modern eyelid research. The aim of our study was to facilitate visualisation of upper eyelid anatomy by optimising the orientation of cadaveric specimens. We studied the anatomy of everted eyelids, providing an excellent histological view of the posterior approach to the eyelid commonly used in surgery. Non-traumatic separation of the eyelid lamellae provides a new view of the eyelid's lamellar nature. Further application of this model may enhance understanding of the multilayered aspect o…

Comparison of radiographic stress views for scapholunate dynamic instability in a cadaver model.

PURPOSE: Many different stress views for the diagnosis of scapholunate (SL) instability have been described in the literature. The purpose of this study is to compare these stress views and determine which view has the greatest utility for demonstrating SL gap radiographically. METHODS: We performed a literature search for articles describing SL radiographic stress views. We created SL instability in 9 cadaveric wrists by ligamentous sectioning and imaged each specimen using all radiographic views found in the literature. These included the "clenched pencil" view, clenched fist views in varyi…

Definition of a safe-zone in open carpal tunnel surgery: a cadaver study.

Carpal tunnel decompression is one of the most common surgical procedures in hand surgery. Cutaneous innervation of the palm by median and ulnar nerves was evaluated to find a suitable incision preserving cutaneous nerves. A morphometric study was designed to define the safe-zone for mini-open carpal tunnel release. Sixteen fresh-frozen (8 right, 8 left) and 14 formalin-fixed (8 right, 6 left) cadaveric hands were dissected. Anatomy of the palmar cutaneous branch of the median and the ulnar nerve, motor branch of the median nerve, superficial palmar arch were evaluated relative to the surgical…
