BACKGROUND: The cellular mechanisms which contribute to billing secretion and absorption are not fully defined. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the membrane ion transport properties of Mz-ChA-1 and Sk-ChA-1 cell lines derived from human biliary tumors.
METHODS: In cultured cells, 125I and 36Cl efflux rates were used to assess membrane anion permeability, and 86Rb efflux rates were used to assess K+ permeability.

Iodide inhibits cyclic AMP accumulation in the thyroid by a process which is prevented by inhibition of iodide uptake and of thyroid peroxidase. By a similar process, it also exerts other independent effects such as the enhancement of iodinated protein release. We evaluated the bone metabolic activity in patients with renal osteodystrophy using positron emission tomography and [18F]fluoride ion. Eight patients had secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT), and three had low-turnover bone disease. Distal esophageal spasm is a rare motility disorder presenting principally with nonobstructive dysphagia and noncardiac chest pain. In symptomatic patients, the manometric diagnosis is made when >10% of the wet swallows have simultaneous and/or premature contractions intermixed with normal peristalsis. We characterize manometry and barium as complementary diagnostic approaches, and given the intermittent nature of the disorder, one should be always aware that it is almost impossible to rule out spasm. We have investigated the requirement for Ca(2+) in the fusion and content mixing of rat hepatocyte late endosomes and lysosomes in a cell-free system.
