Between 2000 and 2019, the Stanford Healthcare Clinical Virology Laboratory performed HIV-1 resistance testing for 9199 individuals in Northern California. Nonsubtype B viruses were identified in 3.5%, most often CRF01_AE (1.0%), subtype C (1.0%), CRF02_AG (0.46%), and subtype A (0.45%). Non-B viruses, particularly CRF01_AE and CRF02_AG, increased significantly over time. Although subtype B remained dominant, the rising presence of non-B subtypes reflects growing viral diversity within the U.S. epidemic.

Seven cutaneous mast cell tumors were identified in 6 geriatric California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). All tumors were within the dermis and grossly appeared as single, or in one case two, less than 1-cm-diameter, well-circumscribed, raised nodules. INTRODUCTION: Many young adults who vape develop nicotine dependence and have challenges with quitting nicotine use, but methods they use to successfully quit vaping have not been well described.
AIMS AND METHODS: Self-report data were collected from June 2022 to January 2023 from young adults enrolled in a cohort study in Southern California (n = 2251). We examined prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of ever regularly vaping nicotine, currently vaping nicotine, any attempt to quit vaping, any success in quitting vaping, and, if successful, methods used to successfully quit.

Ukraine surveillance data suggest high tuberculosis (TB) incidence, including multidrug resistance. Of 299 newcomers from Ukraine screened in San Francisco, California, USA, by using an interferon-γ-release-assay (IGRA) and chest radiograph, 7.4% were IGRA positive and 1 had laboratory-confirmed pansusceptible TB. Screening with IGRA and chest radiograph can help characterize TB risk.

Cutaneous Coccidioidomycosis (CC) infection can present with a wide variety of clinical presentations and is well known as a 'great imitator'. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with CC in a large referral center in Central Valley, California, from 2010 to 2022 using the ICD9 and ICD10 codes for coccidioidomycosis and CC. BACKGROUND: Increases in serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity have been reported in Thoroughbred (TB) racehorses and associated with maladaptation to training but the underlying etiology remains unknown.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Classify the etiology of high GGT syndrome in racing TBs by assessment of pancreatic enzymes, vitamin E concentrations, and both a candidate gene and whole genome association study. We hypothesized that a genetic variant resulting in antioxidant insufficiency or pancreatic dysfunction would be responsible for high GGT syndrome in TBs.
