Biomass burning and African dust influence on seasonal aerosol chemistry over the Western Caribbean (Part I): Atmospheric variability and human health risk from particle-bound PAHs.

Seasonal aerosol variability over the Western Caribbean is strongly influenced by two recurrent atmospheric regimes: regional biomass burning (BB, March-May) associated with cold-front intrusions and dry-season circulation, and long-range transport of African dust (AD, June-August) during the boreal summer wet season. Despite their relevance for air quality and public health across the region, the combined influence of these regimes on near-surface aerosol composition and toxicological exposure remains insufficiently characterized. Here, we present an integrated assessment of meteorology, aero

[The risk approach and maternal mortality: a Latin American perspective].

Maternal mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean is a health problem that reflects the existing inequalities in the Region, as expressed in the loss of more than 28,000 women every year as a result of abortions and complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium. This situation is associated with the limited coverage and low quality of health and family planning services and, in particular, with the tremendous unmet need for family planning services in many countries of the Region. The risk approach is proposed as an effective method for enhancing health care, especially in the

Genomic analysis reveals dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 during the initial phases of the COVID-19 outbreak in the Dominican Republic.

Genomic sequencing of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been widely instituted during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to track the emergence and spread of new lineages. While this powerful tool can influence public health decisions and therapeutic development, not all regions of the world have had equal access to sequencing capacity, affecting surveillance. One such underrepresented region is the Caribbean islands, including the Dominican Republic (DR). To determine retrospectively what lineages were circulating in the DR in the first year of the

Sex work in the Caribbean Basin: patterns of substance use and HIV risk among migrant sex workers in the US Virgin Islands.

Drug use, commercial sex work, and migration each play a role in the spread of HIV in the Caribbean, yet the intersection of these factors in the region is not well understood. This paper explores the connections between substance use and HIV risk among migrant female sex workers in the US Virgin Islands. Participants were located through targeted sampling techniques in Christiansted and Frederiksted, St. Croix, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas where 101 women were interviewed regarding their drug use, sexual behaviours, migration patterns and health status. In the month prior to interview, 25

Results of Five Years of a Cancer Patient Navigation Training Program for Limited-Resource Settings in the Caribbean and Africa.

PURPOSE: Cancer patient navigation (CPN) training programs in the United States do not address the unique challenges of limited-resource settings. This study evaluates knowledge acquisition, utilization, and participant feedback from the Caribbean Cancer Research Institute's (CCRI) CPN training program, which trained participants from the Caribbean, Botswana, and Kenya between 2018 and 2023. METHODS: The CCRI conducted in-person CPN training in 2018 and 2019, paused in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and transitioned to a virtual format in 2021. The program, delivered annually, expande

Population Structure and Genetic Diversity among Isolates of Coccidioides posadasii in Venezuela and Surrounding Regions.

Coccidioides posadasii is a pathogenic fungus that causes coccidioidomycosis in many arid regions of the Americas. One of these regions is bordered by the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding landscape may play an important role in the dispersion of C. posadasii across South America through southeastern Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Venezuela. Comparative phylogenomic analyses of C. posadasii reveal that clinical strains from Venezuela are genetically distinct from the North American populations found in (i) Arizona and (ii) Texas, Mexico, and the rest of South America (TX/MX/SA). We find evi

Transmission dynamics of Oropouche virus in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus endemic to the Amazon region since the 1950s that re-emerged in late 2023, causing a major epidemic across Central and South America. Here we investigated the transmission dynamics of the 2023-2024 epidemic in Manaus City (Amazonas state, Brazil), a major metropolitan hub in the Amazon, and estimated OROV infections across Latin America and the Caribbean. OROV re-emergence in Manaus resulted in an increase of IgG seroprevalence from 11.4% in November 2023 to 25.7% in November 2024. The neutralizing capacity of OROV-specific IgG antibodies from individuals

Surgical Techniques for Cleft Lip Repair: Insights From Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip (CL) repair techniques vary significantly, often depending on surgeons' experience, preference, and cleft characteristics. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where CL prevalence is high, research on surgical practices remains limited. This study aims to document and analyze preferences for unilateral (UCL) and bilateral cleft lip (BCL) repair among Operation Smile surgeons in LAC to support improved cleft care. METHODS: A 22-question survey was distributed anonymously electronically to credentialed LAC surgeons performing UCL and BCL repairs. The survey explored d

Impacts of hurricanes and disease on Diadema antillarum in shallow water reef and mangrove locations in St John, USVI.

The 1983-1984 mortality event of the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum reduced their population by up to 99% and was accompanied by a phase shift from coral dominated to algal dominated reefs in the Caribbean. Modest rebounds of D. antillarum populations in the Caribbean have been noted, and here we document the impacts of two major hurricanes (2017, Irma and Maria) and the 2022 disease outbreak on populations of D. antillarum found by targeted surveys in the urchin zone at nine fringing reef and three mangrove sites on St. John, USVI. D. antillarum populations at the reef sites had de

(Re-)Emergence of Oropouche Virus (OROV) Infections: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Oropouche Virus (OROV; genus of Orthobunyavirus) is the causal agent of Oropouche Fever (OF). Due to the lack of specific signs and symptoms and the limited availability of diagnostic tests, the actual epidemiology of OROV infections and OF has been extensively disputed. In this systematic review with meta-analysis, a literature search was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and MedRxiv in order to retrieve relevant articles on the documented occurrence of OROV infections. Pooled detection rates were then calculated for anti-OROV antibodies and virus detection (i.e., viral RNA detected by v

Huntington's disease-like disorders in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Diseases with a choreic phenotype can be due to a variety of genetic etiologies. As testing for Huntington's disease (HD) becomes more available in previously resource-limited regions, it is becoming apparent that there are patients in these areas with other rare genetic conditions which cause an HD-like phenotype. Documentation of the presence of these conditions is important in order to provide appropriate diagnostic and clinical care for these populations. Information for this article was gathered in two ways; the literature was surveyed for publications reporting a variety of genetic chore

Reversing the tide - diagnosis and prevention of T2DM in populations of African descent.

Populations of African descent are at the forefront of the worldwide epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The burden of T2DM is amplified by diagnosis after preventable complications of the disease have occurred. Earlier detection would result in a reduction in undiagnosed T2DM, more accurate statistics, more informed resource allocation and better health. An underappreciated factor contributing to undiagnosed T2DM in populations of African descent is that screening tests for hyperglycaemia, specifically, fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c, perform sub-optimally in these populations. To

Low blood lead levels impair intellectual and hematological function in children from Cartagena, Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Lead produces numerous biochemical and physiological changes in humans, including hematological disorders, toxic effects on the central nervous system and in the function of several organs. The aim of this study was to determine blood lead levels (BLL) in children from Cartagena, Colombia, associating those with hematological and liver damage markers, the intelligence quotient (IQ), as well as with gene expression of the aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALAD), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), gamma interferon (INF-γ), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and tumor protein (p53). To achieve this purpose, 118

Metagenomic analysis reveals a green sulfur bacterium as a potential coral symbiont.

Coral reefs are ecologically significant habitats. Coral-algal symbiosis confers ecological success on coral reefs and coral-microbial symbiosis is also vital to coral reefs. However, current understanding of coral-microbial symbiosis on a genomic scale is largely unknown. Here we report a potential microbial symbiont in corals revealed by metagenomics-based genomic study. Microbial cells in coral were enriched for metagenomic analysis and a high-quality draft genome of "Candidatus Prosthecochloris korallensis" was recovered by metagenome assembly and genome binning. Phylogenetic analysis show

Animal leptospirosis in Latin America and the Caribbean countries: reported outbreaks and literature review (2002-2014).

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease whose transmission is linked through multiple factors in the animal-human-ecosystem interface. The data on leptospirosis reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) for Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) countries/sovereign territories from 2005-2011 were mapped, showing a wide distribution of outbreaks in the region. Tropical terrestrial biomes are the predominate ecosystems showing reports of outbreaks. Climatic and ecological factors were relevant to the occurrence of epidemic outbreaks. The available scientific information from 20

Genetics of Alzheimer's disease in Caribbean Hispanic and African American populations.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), which is characterized by progressive deterioration in cognition, function, and behavior, is the most common cause of dementia and the sixth leading cause of all deaths, placing a considerable burden on Western societies. Most studies aiming to identify genetic susceptibility factors for LOAD have focused on non-Hispanic white populations. This is, in part related to differences in linkage disequilibrium and allele frequencies between ethnic groups that could lead to confounding. However, in addition, non-Hispanic white populations are simply more widely
