The claustrum is a sheet-like layer of gray matter situated between the external and extreme capsules of the mammalian brain. This structure … ocus our efforts on fronto-claustral and occipito-claustral connections. Twelve healthy, adult male cats, each weighing ~ 3.5 kg, were studied, seven of which underwent electrolytic lesions of the frontal cortex (A3, A4, and a portion of A6), and five of the occipital cortex (A17, A18, A21). From three to six days after lesioning, subjects were euthani …

CASE SUMMARY: In cats, polyuria (PU) and polydipsia (PD) are defined as a urine specific gravity (USG) consistently <1.035 and water consumption >100 ml/kg/day. A 2-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat with PU/PD was brought to our hospital. Diagnostic tests for PU/PD included physical examination, blood analyses (complete blood count, serum chemistry profile, electrolytes, ionised calcium, symmetric dimethylarginine and thyroxine concentration), thoracic radiography, abdominal ultrasound examination, urinalysis, urine cortisol:creatinine ratio, urine protein:creatinine ratio and uri…

CASE SUMMARY: This report describes a case of gastric mucormycosis in a young Ragdoll cat with a 5-day history of vomiting. Physical examination detected mild dehydration and tenderness was elicited on abdominal palpation. The results of blood work-up and radiographic study were unremarkable; however, abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed multiple hyperechoic neoformations at the level of the pyloric antrum, which were confirmed on endoscopic examination. Non-septate hyphae of irregular diameter with a branched appearance were observed on cytology, and histological examination reveal

Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare proliferative meningovascular entity that has been described mainly in humans and dogs. Here we describe MA in a 13-y-old spayed female domestic shorthaired cat that died 5 d after acute change in behavior, open-mouth breathing, seizures, hyperthermia, and inability to walk. On MRI, the lesion appeared predominantly as extraparenchymal hemorrhage. Autopsy changes consisted of a dark-red, hemorrhagic plaque that expanded the leptomeninges and outer neuroparenchyma of the right piriform and temporal telencephalic lobes, chalky white nodules in the peripancreat

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old female spayed Maine Coon cat was referred for assessment of hyporexia, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea. An abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged and hypoechoic pancreas containing two large fluid-filled structures. Fine-needle aspiration of the cyst-like structures was performed, and cytology revealed moderate-to-marked predominantly suppurative inflammation with yeast cells. Candida glabrata was cultured from the fluid. The patient was treated with oral itraconazole and the clinical signs resolved, although repeat abdominal ultrasound and cytology revealed

Cat scratch disease is a usually harmless infectious disease caused by Bartonella henselae bacteria. These bacteria are transmitted to humans by a cat scratch or bite. Its typical presentation is a self-limiting lymphadenitis of regional lymph nodes, mostly in the neck. The disease is especially prevalent in children and young adults. Cat scratch disease can be associated with fever, headaches, and malaise, sometimes present itself atypically and in only a few cases expand as a disseminated disease. A swelling in the neck can be caused by many different disorders. In patients with lymphadeniti

We present three clinical cases to show the diversity of clinical presentations of Bartonella henselae infection, from classical adenopathy to disseminated form. It is an infection that leads to diagnostic wandering, due to a lack of explicit history and the variety of clinical manifestations. Antibiotic therapy is rarely necessary because it has a spontaneously favourable evolution in the majority of cases.

CASE SUMMARY: A 12-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a 10 month history of weight loss. Thin body condition and a grade II/VI systolic parasternal heart murmur was noted during examination. Moderate-to-severe anemia and intermittent thrombocytopenia were identified on serial complete blood counts. Antibodies against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were detected, but vaccination for FIV occurred previously. Echocardiography revealed biatrial and biventricular enlargement, left ventricular hypertrophy and pericardial effusion. Splenomegaly was present on abdomi
