One of the items of a herd management programme concerned with reproduction consists in a study of those animals which have not yet come into oestrus within fifty to sixty days after parturition. On twenty farms, an inventory was made of the causes of anoestrus in these animals and the effects of anoestrus on fertility were studied. In addition, studies were done to determine whether there was a possible relationship between the causes of anoestrus and the age of the animals, the season, type of housing and the course of the last parturition and puerperium. The efficacy of albendazole in removing gastrointestinal nematodes and tapeworms was studied in 16 treated and 16 untreated (control) beef calves. The anthelmintic was administered as an oral drench at a dose level of 5 ml/45.5 kg of body weight (5 mg/kg). During all of 1974 we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, about 407,000 yearling feedlot cattle. The morbidity was 5.1%, with a case mortality of 18.9% and a population mortality of 1.0%. Both morbidity and mortality were higher during fall and winter than during spring and summer. Of the 3,943 dead cattle, 1,988 were necropsied. Diamphenethide and a mixture of nitroxynil and hexachlorophane, which are effective against Fasciola hepatica in sheep, are effective in cattle if allowance is made for the slower rate of development and the more intense liver reaction which is associated with resistance. Adult parasites are mostly rejected around the time of maturity so that therapy in cattle must be directed against the early developmental stage using an appropriate drug.
