Developmental processes and brain imaging studies in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: It is often difficult to discern how findings of a neuroimaging study relate to the pathophysiology of an illness because imagin … to age-matched controls have found that lenticular nucleus volumes are reduced in TS adults, while caudate nucleus volumes are reduced in both adults and children with TS. In a study of the cerebral cortex, prefrontal volumes in TS adults were smaller, but in TS children were larger than in those of age-matched controls. Complementing the anatomical findings of …

GABA[A] receptor level changes in female hamster forebrain following in vivo estrogen progesterone and benzodiazepine treatment: a quantitative autoradiography analysis.

The levels of gamma amino butyric acid (GABAA) receptors (i.e. 3H-Muscimol binding sites) were determined by quantitative neurotransmitter receptors autoradiography in ovariectomized (OVX), OVX-estradiolo (E), OVX-progesterone (P), OVX-E + P, diazepam (DZ) and DZ + Ro15-1788 treated female hamsters. The various hormonal treatments altered 3H muscimol binding in many brain areas, whereas DZ and DZ + Ro15-1788 had little influence on GABAA receptor levels at the onset of the blocked aggressive behavioral activity. For example, E, P and E + P all significantly increased 3H muscimol binding in med

Diagnostic value of intravoxel incoherent motion imaging of deep gray matter nuclei in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical diagnostic value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging in Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Sixty-six subjects from Ningde City Hospital were classified into AD (n = 23), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (n = 28), and normal control (NC) (n = 15) groups. Standardized apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCst) and IVIM parameters, including true diffusion coefficient (D), perfusion fraction (f), and pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), were measured in the caudate nucleus, thalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, and amygdala using 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging…

Genetic Links Between Subcortical Brain Morphometry and Suicide Attempt Risk in Children and Adults.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have uncovered genetic variants associated with suicide attempt (SA) risk and regional brain volumes (RBVs). However, the extent of their genetic overlap remains unclear. To address this, we investigated whether the genetic architecture of SA and various RBVs (i.e., caudate nucleus, hippocampus, brainstem, ventral diencephalon, thalamus, globus pallidus, putamen, nucleus accumbens, amygdala and intracranial volume (ICV)) was shared. We leveraged GWAS summary statistics from the largest available datasets on SA (N = 958,896) and intracranial and subcortica…

Late-onset post-hemiplegic hemidystonia: CT and angiographic findings.

A 27-year-old woman is described who suffered an acute left hemiplegia at the age of three years and 20 years later she noted the onset of u … ological correlation in this case supports recent evidence for a disruption of pathways between the caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus and thalamus in the pathophysiology of hemidystonia.

Analysis of intracerebral hematoma shapes by numerical computer simulation using the finite element method.

The distortion and stress distribution in the brain caused by putaminal hemorrhage were estimated by computer stimulation using the finite element method (FEM). The two-dimensional model of a single cerebral hemisphere contained cortex, white matter, caudate nucleus, lenticular nucleus, thalamus, falx, and lateral ventricle. Five types of intracerebral hemorrhage were modeled at different locations in the lenticular nucleus. The models generated putaminal hematomas of various shapes influenced by the location of the bleeding points. Hematomas caused deformation of the brain, collapse of the la…

A telerecording analysis of reaching disruptions in rats after stimulation or lesion.

In the so-called "handedness" experiments rats learn to retrieve food pellets from a narrow tubular feeder preferentially with the left or right forepaw. Frame-by-frame analysis of videotape recordings showed that the stereotype movement consists of a fast forepaw extension (54 msec), followed by isolated finger flexion (46 msec) overlapping later with slow forelimb retraction (180 to 400 msec). Reach-triggered single pulse stimulation of contralateral caudate nucleus or ipsilateral dentate nucleus interfered with finger flexion and disorganized the time course of the movement. Electrolytic le…

Diffusion-weighted imaging in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant progressive neurodegenerative disorder that results from an expanded trinucleotide (CAG) repeat on the huntingtin gene. Neurodegeneration in HD affects most prominently the basal ganglia. Therefore, diffusivity was obtained in the basal ganglia and thalamus of 29 patients with early HD and 27 healthy volunteers by means of the trace of the diffusion tensor (Trace(D)). Putaminal, caudate, pallidal, and thalamic Trace(D) values were increased in patients with HD compared with controls. Increased diffusivity in the putamen and caudate nucleus cor…

Two Cases of Mange Mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) Infestation in Long-Tailed Goral (Naemorhedus caudatus) in Republic of Korea.

The long-tailed goral, Naemorhedus caudatus (Mammalia: Bovidae), is one of the endangered animals in the Republic of Korea (Korea). Sarcoptic mange mites infested in diverse species of mammals, including humans, but no case has been reported in long-tailed gorals. We report 2 cases of mange mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, infestation in long-tailed gorals. Mange mites were sampled in the skin legions of the 2 long-tailed gorals, which were rescued in 2 different regions, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea. Our results showed that the ectoparasite was the itch mite that bu

Dystonia musculorum deformans: a 'critical phenomenon' model involving nigral dopaminergic and caudate pathways.

In physical systems, a 'critical phenomenon' is a macroscopic occurrence which arises from a change in the relative magnitudes of two or more physical influences whose action is expressed purely in microscopic terms. This concept is potentially valuable in describing the clinical symptomatology of dystonia musculorum deformans (DMD) and other movement disorders. The lateral inhibitory network of Spiny I caudate cells and the profuse neostriatal projection of dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra are proposed as anatomic substrates for two short-range neostriatal influences whose inter

The causal role of the subthalamic nucleus in the inhibitory network.

The neural network mediating successful response inhibition mainly includes right hemisphere activation of the pre-supplementary motor area, inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), subthalamic nucleus (STN), and caudate nucleus. However, the causal role of these regions in the inhibitory network is undefined. Five patients with Parkinson's disease were assessed prior to and after therapeutic thermal ablation of the right STN in two separate functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sessions while performing a stop-signal task. Initiation times were faster but motor inhibition with the left hand (cont…

Brain compensation during response inhibition in premanifest Huntington's disease.

Premanifest Huntington's disease (pre-HD) individuals typically show increased task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), su … ed decreased fMRI activity with increased stop difficulty in right inferior frontal gyrus and right caudate nucleus. Relative to controls, pre-HD individuals showed increased fMRI activity in right inferior frontal gyrus and in right caudate nucleus at higher levels of stop difficulty, which is the opposite effect to that predicted by the model. Our findings sugg …

Corticosteroids operate as a switch between memory systems.

Stress and corticosteroid hormones are known to affect learning and memory processes. In this study, we examined whether stress and corticosteroids are capable of facilitating the switch between multiple memory systems in mice. For this purpose, we designed a task that allowed measurement of nucleus caudate-based stimulus-response and hippocampus-based spatial learning strategies. Naive mice used spatial strategies to locate an exit hole on a circular hole board at a fixed location flagged by a proximal stimulus. When the mice were either stressed or administered corticosterone before the task

Differential effects of (D)- and (L)-homocysteic acid on the membrane potential of cat caudate neurons in situ.

The enantiomers of homocysteic acid have been applied by microiontophoresis to neurons of the cat caudate nucleus in situ. The (L)-enantiomer elicited a bursty firing pattern similar to the one caused by N-methyl-D-aspartate, but differing from the N-methyl-D-aspartate pattern inasmuch as (L)-homocysteate induced depolarization shifts were shorter and had a smaller amplitude. (L)-Homocysteate induced excitations could be strongly inhibited by the selective N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist 2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid but they were less sensitive to this antagonist than N-methyl-D-aspartate…

Quantitative changes in regional cerebral blood flow of rats induced by alpha- and beta-adrenergic stimulants.

Cerebral blood flow was measured with the 14C-ethanol technique in 8 regions (frontal, parieto-temporal and occipital cortex, caudate nucleus, thalamus, cerebellum, mesencephalon, and pons) of rats. The highest flow values (83-89.5 ml/100 g/min) were found in cortical areas, whereas pons had the lowest flow (48 ml/100 g/min). Intravenous infusion of noradrenaline or adrenaline markedly reduced rCBF (by 22-48% of control levels) in all regions except thalamus, mesencephalon, and pons. The noradrenaline-induced reduction was blocked, and the effect of adrenaline reversed, after pretreatment with…
