BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a novel infectious disease with global impact. A virus from the family Coronaviridae has been identified as the cause, but the pathogenesis is still unclear.

We used an autoimmune serum from a patient with discoid lupus erythematosus to clone a cDNA of 2808 base pairs. Its open reading frame of 2079 base pairs encodes a predicted polypeptide of 693 amino acids named CDA1 (cell division autoantigen-1). This study documents the clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and flow-cytometric findings in five horses with cutaneous non-epidermotropic malignant lymphoma (ML). The median survival time after discovery of the first subcutaneous nodules was 3.8 years (range 2-5 years: n=4).
