OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of 5-step manipulation and traction of cervical vertebrae on vertebroarterial type of cervical spondylosis and probe its mechanism.
METHODS: The 120 patients were randomly divided into a treatment group (manipulation group) and a control group (traction group) with 60 cases in each. The curative effects in the two groups were evaluated after treatment.
RESULTS: The curative rate and the total effective rate is 26.7% and 93.4% respectively in the treatment group, and 13.3% and 86.7% respectively in the control group, with statistical significance i…

BACKGROUND: Posteroanterior mobilisation is a manual therapy technique that is commonly used in the examination and treatment of neck pain, but little is known about its biomechanical effect. The purpose of this study was to determine the intervertebral movements of the cervical spine produced by posteroanterior mobilisation.
METHODS: The cervical spines of nineteen healthy subjects were scanned using an open interventional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Posteroanterior mobilisation forces were applied to the fifth cervical vertebra whilst they were in the prone position. Sagittal images

Osteophytes are frequently observed in elderly people and most commonly appear at the anterior edge of the cervical and lumbar vertebrae body. The anterior osteophytes keep developing and will lead to neck/back pain over time. In clinical practice, the accurate measurement of the anterior osteophyte length and the understanding of the temporal progression of anterior osteophyte growth are of vital importance to clinicians for effective treatment planning. This study proposes a new measuring method using the osteophyte ratio index to quantify anterior osteophyte length based on lateral radiogra

Spinal cord injuries result after diving into shallow water, often after incautious jumps head first into water of unknown depth during recreational or sport activities. Mortality is generally due to upper cervical trauma. The authors present a case of a diving-related death in a young woman who underwent medicolegal investigations. The measured water depth at the supposed dive site was 1.40 m. Postmortem radiology and autopsy revealed fractures of the body and the posterior arch of the fifth cervical vertebra, a fracture of the right transverse process of the sixth cervical vertebra and hemor

BACKGROUND: Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a benign condition. With early diagnosis and appropriate management, it can be cured completely, leaving no residual deformity. However, long-standing, untreated CMT can lead to permanent craniofacial deformities and asymmetry.
METHODS: Four adult patients presented to the author with long-standing, untreated CMT. Initial clinical assessment demonstrated tightness of the sternocleidomastoid muscle on the affected side. Investigation of cervical spine using 3-dimensional computed tomography scans with cervical segmentation allowed a 3-dimens

Cervical spondylosis and ankylosing hyperostosis of the cervical vertebrae are commonly asymptomatic. Dysphagia caused by cervical osteophyte formation is rare. We report a case of spondylotic dysphagia with striking radiographic findings. A massive anterior cervical hyperostosis was resected via the anterior cervical approach with excellent relief of dysphagia.

Several studies have examined the functional relationship between mandibular movement and head or body posture, but head and body motion during jaw movement have not been extensively investigated. Ten healthy participants performed repetitive jaw tapping movement. Piezoelectric accelerometers were attached on the surfaces of the participant's forehead, mentum, and over the spinous processes of the sixth cervical, twelfth thoracic and third lumbar vertebrae. The direction in which the antero-posterior acceleration signals appeared around the onsets of jaw opening and closing were observed for t

The height of the vertebral growth zones of 13 adolescents dying between the ages of 13 and 18 years was determined with the aid of an eyepiece micrometer. In addition, the proportion 'total of widths of chondrocyte columns/diameter of the growth zone' was established. In the cervical spine, the growth zones of the caudal end plates were significantly higher than those of the cranial end plates. The reverse was true for the thoracic vertebrae. In the lumbar spine, however, conditions resembled those found in the cervical spine in that the caudal end plates were higher than those of the cranial

Radiologic studies are essential in diagnosing Forestier's disease and include lateral cervical spine roentgenograms, thoracic and lumbosacral vertebrae roentgenograms, esophagram, vertebrae roentgenograms, esophagram, and computed tomography. Patients with Forestier's disease may be considered to be operative candidates if they have persistent dysphagia, dysphonia, and a feeling of fullness or foreign body in the throat. The patient in our case report underwent anterior surgical resection of her anterior cervical osteophytes. Two months following surgery, she was no longer experiencing dyspha

A 56-year-old female patient was admitted with a history of pain during neck movements after cervical injury. Computerized tomography scan revealed type II odontoid fracture and fusion anomaly between C2 and C3 vertebrae. At surgery, the anteroinferior part of C2 vertebra corpus could not be reached; therefore, transodontoid screw was advanced from C3 vertebra toward odontoid process. At follow-up examination, the complaints of the patient had recovered, and fracture line was completely fused. Advancing screw from C3 to odontoid process via anterior cervical approach could be thought an altern

A case of spondylolysis with exceptional involvement of the cervical spine is reported. The lesion turned out to be a defect in the pars interarticularis of a cervical vertebra. Such cases generally involve the sixth vertebra. Spondylolysis is asymptomatic more often than not. Positive diagnosis is supported by an analysis of the anatomic structures on radiographs and CT-scans. Differential diagnoses include congenital lesion (articular dysplasia) is always found, there is no argument allowing the assertion that cervical spondylolysis is a congenital condition rather than secondary to stress f

The roentgen-anatomical study of the cervical portion of the vertebral column (fluorography and roentgenography in 2 projections followed by morphometrical treatment) was performed in 603 representatives of different professions: turners, milling-machine operators, craftsmen, mechanicians, jugglers, engineers and constructors. The following facts were established: asymmetry of bodies CIV and CV of vertebra in turners and milling-machine operators; differently pronounced cervical lordosis in persons of different professions; specific features in the architectonics of the spongy substance of the

Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) is a rare disease but is more common in adults than children. It's often self-limiting. Spinal involvement is rare. It is the localized and most benign form of Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (previously known as histiocytosis X), characterised by lytic lesions in one or more bones. Spontaneous resolution of vertebral body lesions is very rare. In this case, the patient had one EG in a cervical vertebra and a similar lesion in a lumbar vertebra. This case is important because it featured a symptomatic lesion in the cervical spine accompanied by an asymptomatic lesion

Cervical degenerative disc diseases such as myelopathy and radiculopathy often require conventional treatments like artificial cervical disc replacement or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). When designing a medical device, like the stand-alone cage, there are many design inputs to consider. However, the precise biomechanics of the force between the vertebrae and implanted devices under certain conditions require further investigation. In this study, a new method was developed to evaluate the pressure between the vertebrae and implanted devices by embedding a sensor array into a 3
