Community-Acquired Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Infection in a Child: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is a pathogen causing opportunistic and nosocomial infections that are invasive and fatal, especially in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. However, community-acquired S. maltophilia is rarely reported in children with normal immunity. S. maltophilia is a multi-drug-resistant bacterium, and the preferred drug is trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX), which has greater side effects in children. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we reported the case of a child with clinical manifestations of fever, high C-reactive protein (CRP) and

Is neonatal phototherapy associated with an increased risk for hospitalized childhood bronchial asthma?

This population-based register study examined if factors during the fetal and neonatal period influence the risk for the child to develop bronchial asthma (asthma). From the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register we identified children, born between 1987 and 1999, who had been hospitalized for asthma up to 2001. Thus, the outcome measure contains only hospitalized cases, not all children with asthma. Children younger than 2 yr at admission were excluded because of the uncertainty about the diagnosis of asthma in younger children. The remaining 14,803 children were compared with all children born

Changing Etiological Patterns and Predictors of In-Hospital Mortality in Decompensated Cirrhosis: A 10-Year Cohort Study Before and After COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Decompensated cirrhosis is associated with high in-hospital mortality, influenced by disease severity and underlying etiology. The COVID-19 pandemic may have altered both the etiological spectrum and clinical presentation of hospitalized patients. This study aimed to assess longitudinal changes in etiology and identify predictors of in-hospital mortality over a 10-year period. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 812 patients hospitalized with decompensated liver cirrhosis between 2015 and 2025. Patients were grouped into pre-COVID-19 (2015-2019), COVID-19

Child abuse and neglect in Turkey: professional, governmental and non-governmental achievements in improving the national child protection system.

Since ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1995, significant efforts were made in Turkey to improve protection of children from abuse and neglect. The government took steps to amend relevant laws. Several state departments recognized the need for professional in-service training of relevant governmental agency staff. University hospitals established numerous hospital-based multidisciplinary child protection centres. The government established an Interministerial Higher Council, which has been overseeing the foundation of 13 child advocacy centres for a mu

Characterizing acute and persistent symptoms of COVID-19 among adults and children in rural Zambia, 2020-2022.

Since emerging in December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has led to significant morbidity and mortality globally. While much is known about SARS-CoV-2 infection and sequelae, fewer studies have been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa. This study was conducted to characterize acute and persistent symptoms of COVID-19 among adults and children in rural Zambia. From December 2020 to March 2022, individuals of all ages with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 132) were recruited into a cohort study. For comparison, individuals with acute influenza infection (n = 56) were also recruited. Participants were followed at

Wound infection with multidrug-resistant Providencia rettgeri: About a case report and littérature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Providencia rettgeri, a member of the Morganellaceae family within the Enterobacterales order, is predominantly associated with urinary tract infections in hospitalized individuals, particularly those with indwelling urinary catheters. However, wound infections caused by P. rettgeri are exceedingly rare, with an estimated incidence of around 0.1 %. Here, we present a case of wound infection in a healthy child caused by P. rettgeri, highlighting the rarity of the organism and emphasizing the importance of prompte identification and appropriate antibiotic therapy.
