BACKGROUND: The redbelly tilapia (Coptodon zillii) is a highly invasive fish species posing serious ecological risks to freshwater systems in China. To uncover mechanisms behind its invasion success, this study investigated spatiotemporal plasticity of its gut microbiome and explored the drivers of such plasticity. Using high-throughput 16 S rRNA sequencing, gut microbiota of C. zillii from five water bodies (two rivers, three reservoirs) and from Shuikou Reservoir across four seasons were compared.
RESULTS: Among populations from different habitats, 6 of the top 10 abundant phyla and 17 of t

The contribution of non-cancer tumoral microenvironment to cachexia is vastly unclear. Despite advances in understanding the signals involved in cancer cachexia progression, the exact time point of cachexia onset remains unpredictable. The transgenic KrasLSL-G12D/+;Trp53flox/flox;Pdx1-Cre (KP2C) GEMM is a clinically relevant model, with the timing of cancer cachexia progression from the pre-cachectic, early-onset, to severe cachexia showed that the onset of cachexia was associated with differences in muscle wasting. The exact cell-of-origin in different types of non-cancer cells in the tumoral

The relationship between parasite genotypes and outcome of amoebic infection is still a paradox and needed to be explored. Proper identification and genetic characterization of Entamoeba histolytica clinical isolates is an effective tool for exploring this relation. Along with conventional polymorphic marker (Chitinase), tRNA linked short tandem repeat (STR) loci has been employed as multilocus genotyping tool due to its better resolution and evolutionary significance. Some common as well as exclusive repeat patterns showing significant relation with disease outcome have been identified. Phylo

Chitosan has been shown to be effective in regulating progenitor salivary tissue morphogenesis, however, the specificity of chitosan effects remains unclear. To assess the regulatory ability of chitosan in salivary gland morphogenesis, progenitor salivary tissue from embryonal submandibular gland (SMG) was cultured in chitosan-containing medium. It was found that soluble chitosan was able to promote SMG branching in a dose-dependent manner. The effect was chitosan-specific and was not reproduced by substrates with similar chemical structures or other polymeric molecules of natural or synthetic

Genes that are expressed during leaf senescence in Brassica napus were identified by the isolation of representative cDNA clones. DNA sequence and deduced protein sequence from two senescence-related cDNAs, LSC94 and LSC222, representing genes that are expressed early in leaf senescence before any yellowing of the leaves is visible, showed similarities to genes for pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins: a PR-1a-like protein and a class IV chitinase, respectively. The LSC94 and LSC222 genes showed differential regulation with respect to each other; an increase in expression was detected at differe

Periodontitis is a microbial-induced chronic inflammatory disease, which may not only result in tooth loss, but can also contribute to the development of various systemic diseases. The transition from healthy to diseased periodontium depends on microbial dysbiosis and impaired host immune response. Although periodontitis is a common disease as well as associated with various systemic inflammatory conditions, the taxonomic profiling of the salivary microbiota in periodontitis and its association with host immune and inflammatory mediators has not been reported. Therefore, the aim of this study

BACKGROUND: Various inflammatory biomarkers show prognostic potential for multiple sclerosis (MS)-risk after clinically isolated syndromes. However, biomarkers are often examined singly and their interrelation and precise aspects of their associated pathological processes remain unclear. Clarification of these relationships could aid the appropriate implementation of prognostic biomarkers in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interrelation between biomarkers of inflammation, demyelination and neurodegeneration in acute optic neuritis and to assess their association to measures o

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques, hyperphosphorylated tau tangles, and significant neuronal loss. Recent studies have implicated YKL-40, a glycoprotein commonly associated with inflammation and neural apoptosis, in the pathogenesis of AD.
METHODS: We conducted extensive searches across major scientific databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. We selected peer-reviewed articles, review articles, and clinical studies focusing on YKL-40 in AD.
RESULTS: This review compr

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, primarily due to inadequate early detection, which consequently leads to poor overall survival rates. Current serum tumor markers, including carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and pro-gastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP), exhibit limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value for immunotherapy. The secreted glycoprotein chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1/YKL-40), detectable by ELISA in serum and plasma, is a biologically plausible, rese

More than 10% of adults suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a chronic inflammatory condition that lowers quality of life, reduces productivity, and shortens work hours. Every year, more than 1 million surgeries are performed worldwide as a result of CRS. In recent years, targeted therapy for CRS has become a hotspot of research at home and abroad and has made significant progress, but CRS still has a high recurrence rate. Therefore CRS urgently needs precise targeted therapy. In the pathological process of CRS, the involvement of eosinophils is an important inflammatory mechanism. And ex

Introduction: Neuroinflammation is a common pathophysiological mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases (ND). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) YKL-40 has recently been candidated as a neuroinflammatory biomarker of ND. Areas covered: We provide an update on the role of CSF YKL-40 as a pathophysiological biomarker of ND. YKL-40 may discriminate Alzheimer's disease (AD) from controls and may predict the progression from the early preclinical to the late dementia stage. In genetic AD, YKL-40 increases decades before the clinical onset. It does not seem a specific biomarker of a certain ND although sporad

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.)is an economically useful crop grown globally for sugar, ethanol and biofuel production. The crop is vulnerable to fungus Colletotrichum falcatum known to cause red rot disease. The pathogen hydrolyses stalk parenchyma cells where sucrose is accumulated resulting in upto 75% losses in sugar recovery. In this study, transgenic sugarcane having resistance against red rot was developed by introducing Trichoderma spp. endochitinase following Agrobacterium mediated transformation. The transgene introduction and expression in genetically modified plants were verified throug

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication during pregnancy, which can have harmful health consequences for both the mother and the fetus. Given the placenta's crucial role as an endocrine organ during pregnancy, exploring and validating key genes in the placenta hold significant potential in the realm of GDM prevention and treatment. In this study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from two databases, GSE70493 and PRJNA646212, and verified by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in placenta tissues. DEGs expression was de

Vibrio is heterotrophic ubiquitous marine bacteria that plays dual role as putative halobiont and potential pathogen. Environment and diseases are inextricable hence the role of vibrio as a potential pathogen in the natural environment must be comprehended. Hence the present study aims at investigating the pathogenicity of Vibrio owensii on the post larvae of Litopenaeus vannamei. V. owensii isolated from the marine natural habitat of the Palk Bay province in India was highly resistant to ampicillin, methicillin, tetracycline and vancomycin. The strain also lacked pathogenicity against the pos
