A case of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a renal allograft patient.

We describe a renal allograft patient with a Chlamydia trachomatis infection. A 43 year-old man was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in 1985 which necessitated the transplantation of a cadaver kidney in 1986. The kidney was rejected two years later. A second transplantation was performed in 1991. At the beginning of 1998 symptoms and signs of chronic renal failure and dysuria set in. Routine microbiological studies were negative. Cell culture on McCoy cell line was positive for an active infection with C. trachomatis--initially 3+, then 2+, 1+ and negative following treatment. The patien

Chlamydia trachomatis infection: is it relevant in irritable bowel syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome can present with gynaecological symptoms similar to those of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, which is commonly caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Infection with this organism might therefore lead to diagnostic and management difficulties in patients, not only as a result of symptom overlap between the two disorders but also because chlamydial infection might exacerbate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. This study was designed to investigate any possible link between chlamydial infection and irritable bowel syndrome. PATIENTS/METHODS: The prevale

Modern diagnosis and management of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis infection is now the commonest bacterial, sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Uncomplicated genital chlamydial infection often does not produce symptoms in men or women, but patients may present with sequelae. New diagnostic techniques are available to identify C. trachomatis more easily and new antibiotic regimens provide effective treatment. These factors, together with heightened awareness within the medical profession and the general population, should help to reduce the prevalence of this infection.

Acute transverse myelitis associated with Chlamydia psittaci infection.

We report a case of transverse myelitis presenting with fever and rapidly deteriorating neurological signs associated with Chlamydia psittaci infection. It resolved with no long-standing neurological consequences. Only one previous report has described transverse myelitis in association with psittacosis, and this resulted in permanent neurological sequelae.

[Investigation of cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection in gynecologic outpatients].

A group of 662 women in our gynecologic OPD were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis with direct immunofluorecence monoclonal antibody (DFA) staining technique. Their age distribution ranged from 16 to 60 years old. The overall positivity rate was 26.3%. Of the 269 pregnant women, 64 cases were found to have Chlamydia trachomatis infection, an infection rate of 23.74%. There was no statistically significant difference of infection rates among age groups. In the positive group, however, the rate of infertility was 25.43%, much higher than that in the negative group (12.88%, P < 0.01). And there

Epidemiology of infection due to Chlamydia trachomatis in Manitoba, Canada.

In a study of the epidemiology of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Manitoba during 1981-1990, we retrospectively reviewed laboratory and clinical case notification records as well as hospital and health insurance data concerning pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy. After implementation of a control program in 1987, the annual incidence of chlamydial infection was highest among females aged 15-24 years (3,418 cases per 100,000 residents). Recurrent infection, which occurred in 13.4% of patients, was more common in women (P < .001), patients aged 15-24 years (P < .001), registere

[Association of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection with otitis media with effusion].

Chlamydia pneumoniae has recently been recognized to cause various human respiratory tract diseases, including pharyngitis, bronchitis and pneumonia. The most common pathogens of respiratory tract infections such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae are frequently present in middle ear effusions. Therefore, it is possible that C. pneumoniae play a role in otitis media with effusion (OME). Isolation of C. pneumoniae from middle ear aspirates of OME was performed by the culture method using the HeLa 229 or HL cell line. Identification as C. pneumoniae was based on positive stai

Epidemiology and therapy of Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection in women.

Out of 1172 females recruited in a screening program for genital infections, 144 (12.28%) were cervical and/or urethral positive for Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Patients positive for Ct showed no significant differences in terms of demography, sexual practices and clinical evidence as compared to a control group formed by Ct-negative females randomly selected. Historical data showed a higher frequency of previous pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in patients as compared to controls. 11 of the 94 patients' partners tested were sperm positive for Ct. Of the 63 patient

[The value of symptoms and findings in urethral Chlamydia trachomatis infection].

The history and the results of clinical investigations in 74 patients with and 262 men without urethral Chlamydia (C.) trachomatis infection were evaluated: symptoms such as dysuria, discharge and/or burning/itching in the genital region were reported by 77% (n = 57) of the patients with an infection and 63.4% (n = 166) of the men without an infection. Upon clinical investigation, discharge was found in 55.4% (n = 41) of the chlamydia-positive patients and in 47.7% (n = 125) of the chlamydia-negative men. Only when yellow, whitish yellow and clear discharge were distinguished from one another

[Report of 4 cases of Chlamydia infection in the urogenital tract].

Four cases of Chlamydia infection of the urogenital tract were received-recently in our out-patient clinic for foreign patients. The 4 patients were two couples. Both male patients had histories of coitus with other partners: among these two, one had suffered gonorrhea and the other was suspected of having had gonorrhea. Urogenital tract symptoms or sustained abnormal urine analysis results are characteristic of this disease, but in females often no obvious symptoms present. Measurements with fluorescence-labeled Chlamydia trachomatis monoclonal antibody provided a simple and accurate method a

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in "sine causa" recurrent abortion.

One hundred and one women suffering from "sine causa" recurrent abortion were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis (C.T.) infection by using direct examination, cultural and serological procedures. In this series, C.T. infection did not appear to be related to increased risk of recurrent abortion. The culture-positive and serology-positive rates (14.85% and 34.65%, respectively) did not differ from other unselected populations. Neither time from last abortion nor type of abortion were significantly related to C.T. infection. Nonetheless, the women who underwent examination within one year from l

Test of cure for genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women.

Convenient, reliable tests of cure for genital chlamydial infections have not been evaluated. Cervical appearance, endocervical Gram stain, enzyme immunoassay, and culture for Chlamydia trachomatis were evaluated during a pretreatment visit and at two subsequent randomized test-of-cure visits for 64 nongravid women with endocervical C trachomatis of 3544 patients screened. There were no useful correlations between C trachomatis resolution and cervical appearance. Endocervical Gram stain was determined to be unreliable for test-of-cure use. Both C trachomatis culture and enzyme-linked immunosor

Sheep-acquired severe Chlamydia psittaci infection in pregnancy.

There have been five confirmed cases of severe Chlamydia psittaci infection during pregnancy, three having been treated in Edinburgh, Scotland. The most recent case is presented and previous experience is reviewed. The illness usually causes thrombocytopenia with disseminated intravascular coagulation, renal failure and hepatic dysfunction during the late second and early third trimester. The outcome for the fetus is usually fatal and the infection only resolves after delivery or abortion. The main hope is for education to prevent infection occurring in susceptible populations.

Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a pregnancy counseling clinic.

Five hundred twenty asymptomatic women attending a pregnancy counseling clinic were interviewed and screened for cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection before therapeutic abortion. Overall, 56 (10.8%) women were culture positive for C. trachomatis. Restricting testing to women with risk factors for infection or who had cervical leukocytosis on Gram staining of cervical mucus, or who were seropositive for C. trachomatis antibodies proved impractical because of insensitivity or nonspecificity. We evaluated three chlamydia diagnostic tests to determine which test had the best performance charac

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in unmarried women seeking abortions.

Fifty consecutive unmarried women seeking termination of pregnancy in a state run general hospital in Singapore were screened for cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection before abortion. Chlamydial infection was diagnosed by taking a cervical swab, culturing the organism in tissue culture media, and identifying the inclusion bodies by dark ground fluorescent microscopy. Chlamydia trachomatis was recovered in as many as 14% of cases. None of the patients gave any history suggestive of promiscuity. Compared with gonorrhoea in the non-prostitutes sexually active women of the population studied,
