Benign cartilaginous tumors, known as chondrogenic tumors, show cartilage components in the microscopic diagnosis. We present two clinical cases with cartilaginous tumors of the toes showing distinctive clinical manifestations. Two juvenile patients visited our outpatient clinic due to tumors with toenail deformities. A 10-year-old girl presented with a palpable mass with a nail deformity on the left third toe. The initial pathology report was soft tissue chondroma until complete resection. Another 15-year-old male patient visited the dermatology department with a toenail deformity and underwe…

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous reports of techniques used for pectus bar removal after correction of pectus excavatum. We use 2 operat … h was controlled with circumferential compression wrap. Calcification was noted in 11 patients, and chondroma, in 8 patients. Wound infection after bar removal occurred in 3% of patients. No patient required the bar to be bent into a straight configuration for removal.
CONCLUSIONS: Removal of pectus bars using this 2-table T-configuration technique is safe …

In 1998 to 2001, the Academician N. N. Burdenko Research Institute of Neurosurgery operated on 15 patients aged 20 to 65 years who had bulky processes in the base of the skull and paranasal sinuses by applying an access through the frontal sinus. Most patients (n = 7) had meningiomas. The others had osteoma of the base of anterior cranial fossa (n = 2), chondroma (n = 2), angiofibroma (n = 1), fibroma (n = 1), esthesioneuroepithelioma (n = 1), and neurinoma (n = 1). The main criteria for choosing this access were the site and extent of a process, the sizes of the frontal sinus, and no signs of…

Although the nail is a small anatomical structure, it can be affected by various tumors and tumor-like conditions. Because of the distinctiv … n tumors (glomus tumor, onychomatricoma, keratoakanthoma, fibroma, subungual exostosis, hemangioma, chondroma, pyogenic granuloma), malignant tumors (subungual melanoma, subungual squamous cell carcinoma), as well as tumor mimics (mucoid cyst, epidermoid cyst). Although not entirely specific, MRI is a valuable tool in treatment planning of these tumors.

The authors report the case of a 55-year-old man who presented with acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN), a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome with a poor prognosis, immediately after surgery for resection of a cervical chondroma. A misdiagnosis of spinal cord shock due to an acute surgical or vascular postoperative complication was initially made in this patient. Nevertheless, there was continuous transient improvement that was followed by progressive worsening, and further investigation was necessary. The diagnosis of AMSAN, associated with acute colitis caused by Helicobacter pylor…

A series of 73 cases of chondroblastoma of bone, a rare benign tumor, was subjected to clinicopathological analysis, 50 cases of it were studied by immunohistochemistry and affinity histochemistry and 3 cases were observed by electron microscopy. In this series, chondroblastomas were found nearly in patients of all age groups, with the peak incidence occurring in the second decade of life. The lesions were more commonly located in long bone metaphyseal portion, especially in the upper end of femur and the head and neck of femur. It was easily misdiagnosed as giant cell tumor of bone, chondroma…

Enchondromas and chondrosarcomas are common cartilage neoplasms that are either benign or malignant, respectively. The majority of these tumors harbor mutations in either IDH1 or IDH2. Glutamine metabolism has been implicated as a critical regulator of tumors with IDH mutations. Using genetic and pharmacological approaches, we demonstrated that glutaminase-mediated glutamine metabolism played distinct roles in enchondromas and chondrosarcomas with IDH1 or IDH2 mutations. Glutamine affected cell differentiation and viability in these tumors differently through different downstream metabolites. …

INTRODUCTION: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare benign tumor, typically occurring in the metaphysis of long bones. Involvement of craniofacial bones is extremely unusual. The histologic diagnosis of this tumor is difficult because of its similarities to chondrosarcoma. Preferably, chondromyxoid fibroma is treated by complete local excision. Recurrences, or soft tissue implants, may follow incomplete curettage.
AIM OF STUDY: Presentation of the case of 51-year-old woman who presented with a CFM of the nasal septum with extension into the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. In addition, a liter

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm. The tumor is rare, perhaps the rarest of all bone tumors. It is more common in long bones and rare in pelvic bones. We report a case of a 31-year-old woman with chondromyxoid fibroma arising from the iliac bone and presenting with leg pain due to compression on the femoral nerve. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features were non specific for chondromyxoid fibroma. We emphasize the need to consider it in the differential diagnosis of chondrosarcoma.

The first lung tumour-bearing animal was a 7 years and 3 months old cynomolgus monkey. Microscopic examination revealed a neoplastic mass under the pleura that consisted of squamous islands with little keratinization, multifocal mineralization of the keratin, inflammatory cell and foreign body-type giant cell infiltration. It was classified as pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma. In a second cynomolgus monkey (2 years and 10 months old) a lung mass was observed at necropsy. Microscopically the tumour consisted of numerous islands of cartilage with glandular structures lined by a cuboidal epithel

Synovial chondromatosis is a benign, chronic, progressive synovial metaplasia that will not resolve spontaneously. Although it is non-neoplastic, the condition can easily be mistaken histologically as malignant. One Chinese male patient with synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is described. Awareness of this rare lesion is important to prevent overdiagnosis and radical treatment. Treatment consists of synovectomy and removal of loose bodies within the joint space.
