The authors showed the case of 23 years old multipara treated in Department of Reproduction, Institute of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Academy of Medicine, Poznań because of hydatidiform mole using the exhaustion of uteri. After 8 weeks the hysteroscopy was done in order to explain the reasons of elevated serum beta hCG levels. During the hysteroscopy the polypoid lesion was recognized and removed using the electric resectoscope. After this endoscopic operation the normalization of serum beta hCG levels was achieved.

Eighty-nine patients who had hydatidiform moles evacuated at the General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, were followed with serum beta hCG determinations from October 1988 to June 1991. A regression curve for serum beta hCG, as measured by RIA, was derived from the results of 47 of the patients who demonstrated spontaneous regression of serum beta hCG titres. All 47 patients had normal serum titres at 135 days after evacuation. The mean time taken to reach normal level was 82.6 days, while the range was 39 to 135 days (5 to 19 weeks).

Determination of the biochemical tumor markers, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG) gained much importance in respect to staging and follow-up examination of patients presenting with testicular cancer. After cytostatic chemotherapy the reliability of tumor markers is diminished. Retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy (RLA) was done in 60 patients after chemotherapy. Tumor marker elevation was found only in 52% of the patients showing retroperitoneal carcinoma (n = 25).

In a study of 130 first trimester cases of trisomy 21 and 959 controls we have shown that the median MoM for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is lower (0.82) and that for total human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is higher (1.31) than in the control group. Hydropic placentas may be classified by histopathology into hydropic abortus, partial hydatidiform mole, and complete hydatidiform mole. We studied 142 hydropic placentas: 39% were complete hydatidiform moles, 35% partial hydatidiform moles, and 26% hydropic abortuses. Villous vesicle size was predictive of histologic diagnosis. We determined DNA ploidy in 137 cases. Seventy-three percent of hydropic abortuses were diploid and 11% were triploid.
