Inland heatwaves (HW) are increasingly recognised as potent environmental stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the physiological, biochemical, and molecular stress responses in juvenile GIFT (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to simulated short-term (STHW) and long-term (LTHW) heatwave conditions. A total of 144 fish (15.79 ± 0.21 g) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups-control, STHW, and LTHW-with four replicates each. At the end of each experimental heatwave exposure, parameters such as survival, physio-biochemical responses from different organs, serum, a

Limited information is available on how seasonal changes affect host immunity, hemato-biochemical status, antioxidant responses, and parasite infection in cultured fish. Therefore, this study evaluated the associations among seasonal changes, parasitic infections (Cichlidogyrus tilapiae and Centrocestus formosanus), and hemato-biochemical, antioxidant, and immune responses in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish (n = 593) and water samples were collected seasonally from Abbasa Fish Farm, El-Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. Parasite prevalence was highest in summer and lowest in winter. Infect

The integration of natural molecules into aquaculture promotes sustainability by leveraging the fish's immune system to optimize health, productivity, and pathogen resistance. Ginger is widely utilized as an immunomodulatory herb, its impact on the health and productivity of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus) has yet to be fully elucidated. Hence, this study sought to determine how dietary dried ginger powder (DGP) influences red tilapia by examining the growth performance, feed efficiency, body composition, blood chemistry, liver and intestinal health, gene expression (antio

Nile tilapia, is a crucial fish for warmwater aquaculture globally and plays a key role in food security. The experiment's goal was to ascertain the actual effects of lemongrass and/or Arthrospira platensis (A. platensis) on Oreochromis niloticus (O. niloticus) growth. Along with liver and kidney functioning, some organ histopathology, and the expression of genes linked to immunity in liver tissue both before and after an infection with Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila). There were four diets created: with the first serving as a control group and being additive-free, while the second includ

Meningitis caused by Gram-negative bacteria is a serious public health problem, causing morbidity and mortality in both children and adults. Here, we propose a novel experimental model using Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to study neuroinflammation. The fish were infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, and the course of infection was monitored in the peripheral blood. Septicemia was obvious in the blood, while in the brain tissue, infection of the meninges was present. The histopathological examination showed suppurative meningitis, and the cellular immune response in the brain tissue during

The wide-ranging use of heavy metals and pesticides worldwide and their irreversible accumulation in aquatic ecosystems is a major concern. As the range of household and agricultural chemicals increases, water pollution is trending from the toxic effects of a single agent to complex agent pollution that threatens aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pesticides (imidacloprid, IMI) and metals (copper sulfate, CuSO4) on oxidative stress biomarkers, antioxidant enzymes, and biomolecular parameters. The present study on the individual and combined effects of O

Megalocytivirus cause diseases that have serious economic impacts on aquaculture, mainly in East and South-East Asia. Five primary genotypes are known: infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), turbot reddish body iridovirus (TRBIV), threespine stickleback iridovirus (TSIV) and scale drop disease virus (SDDV). ISKNV-mediated infectious spleen and kidney necrosis disease (ISKND) is a major viral disease in both freshwater and marine fish species. In this study, we report the isolation of ISKNV from diseased giant gourami, Osphronemus goramy, in India.

Germline sexual fate has long been believed to be determined by the somatic environment, but this idea is challenged by recent studies of foxl3 mutants in medaka. Here, we demonstrate that the sexual fate of tilapia germline is determined by the antagonistic interaction of dmrt1 and foxl3, which are transcriptionally repressed in male and female germ cells, respectively. Loss of dmrt1 rescued the germ cell sex reversal in foxl3Δ7/Δ7 XX fish, and loss of foxl3 partially rescued germ cell sex reversal but not somatic cell fate in dmrt1Δ5/Δ5 XY fish. Interestingly, germ cells lost sexual plastici

Adropin has been shown to be involved in the regulation of food intake in mice. However, the mechanism of adropin in feeding regulation is still largely unknown. Using the tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, we identified and characterized a novel form of adropin (designated adropin-b) encoding a 68-amino acid precursor. Although adropin-b shared low amino acid identities with its tilapia paralog (designated adropin-a), synteny analysis proved that tilapia adropin is orthologous to its human counterpart. The transcripts of adropin-b were ubiquitously expressed in various tissues with the highest l

Discus (Symphysodon spp.) are costly and prized specimens in the international ornamental fish trade. The majority of discus submitted to the Aquatic Animal Health Unit at the University of the West Indies School of Veterinary Medicine for necropsy between September 2010 and September 2015 had lesions consistent with Cryptobia iubilans infection, thus prompting this study. To determine the prevalence of the flagellated gastrointestinal protozoan C. iubilans in discus fish, 32 discus were sourced from 10 suppliers, including breeders, importers, and hobbyists across Trinidad. Fish were euthaniz

Streptococcosis cause severe losses for global tilapia farming, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize streptococci recovered from Nile tilapia farmed in the Philippines. Moribund and apparently healthy fish were sampled from grow-out cages, ponds and hatcheries. Clinical signs observed included exophthalmia, eye opacity, ascites, lethargy, erratic swimming and haemorrhages. Results showed that both Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus agalactiae were associated with disease in these sites. Consistent with global reports, including those fro

Seventeen species and sub-species of fishes belonging to four families (Cyprinidae, Clariidae, Aplocheilidae, Cichlidae) were known to occur in perennial bodies of water in the Sahara desert. The study of fishes collected in Lake Boukou near Ounianga Serir (Borkou, northern Chad) shows, for the first time, the occurrence in the Sahara desert of relict populations of Polypterus senegalus (Polypteridae) and Poropanchax normani (Poeciliidae). The Cichlidae Tilapia zilli was also collected in this lake. With these new records, the relict fish fauna currently known in lakes and gueltas of the Borko

In Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), individuals with atypical sexual genotype are commonly used in farming (use of YY males to produce all-male offspring), but they also constitute major tools to study sex determinism mechanisms. In other species, sexual genotype and sex reversal procedures affect different aspects of biology, such as growth, behavior and reproductive success. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of sexual genotype on sperm quality in Nile tilapia. Milt characteristics were compared in XX (sex-reversed), XY and YY males in terms of gonadosomatic index, sperm

Heavy metal pollution represents a serious problem facing many of the aquatic organisms. Lead is one of the most toxic elements found in many industrial effluents which are metabolized inside bodies and can cause skeletal deformities by impairing developmental processes and bone formation. This study was undertaken to determine the LC50 of Pb-acetate and detect the effect of 1/10 LC50 exposure on fingerlings of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Modern and accurate diagnostic methods were used; Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of gills, plain X-ray and Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy
