[Human papillomavirus infection correlates with redundant prepuce or phimosis in the patients'sexual partners in Nanjing urban area].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in women and its correlation with redundant prepuce or phimosis in the patients' sexual partners. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire investigation among the women outpatients at the cervical disease clinic of Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Hospital from May to December 2011. We obtained information on their sexual life and determined whether their sexual partners had redundant prepuce or phimosis according to the schematic illustrations we offered. We used biology-hybridize HPV-type test kit, PCR and hybrid

High rates of sexual contact with female sex workers, sexually transmitted diseases, and condom neglect among HIV-infected and uninfected men with tuberculosis in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

To characterize human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk practices among men with tuberculosis, and to determine what factors are associated with HIV infection in this population, we conducted a case-control analysis of data collected during enrollment in a prospective cohort study in the two large tuberculosis treatment centers of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Demographic information and data on risk factors for HIV infection, including history of sex with female sex workers (FSWs) and history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), were collected on 490 HIV-infected and 239 HIV-uninfected men diag

Historicising the prohibition of vulval cutting in the UK: how race and medicine shaped the criminalization of female genital mutilation.

This article is a historical analysis of the law governing vulval cutting in the UK, with a particular focus on the shifting role and perception of the medical profession in this context. It shows how criminalization is not neutral or inevitable, but a strategy that developed through historically contingent negotiations between law and medicine. It charts how racially laden ideas of health, expertise and medical legitimacy informed successive legislative reforms. In doing so, it uncovers the genesis of how racialized understandings of medical authority and mental health were first used to draw

Evaluation of etiology, characteristics, and treatment of patients with vesicovaginal fistula observed in rural Africa.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the etiology, characteristics, and treatment of patients with diagnosis of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) due to labor in rural Africa following surgery in a hospital with western standards according to the current literature. METHODS: In this retrospective large case series, 56 patients undergoing surgery due to prediagnosis of VVF and then followed-up regularly in Nyala-Sudan Turkey Training and Research Hospital between December 2018 and February 2019 were evaluated. The information related to the ages, mode, and the number of deliveries, previou

Effect of female genital cutting performed by health care professionals on labor complications in Egyptian women: a prospective cohort study.

AIM: To examine the effect of the degree of female genital cutting (FGC) performed by health-care professionals on perineal scarring; delivery mode; duration of second stage of labor; incidence of perineal tears and episiotomy in a cohort of uncircumcised versus circumcised (types I and II) women. METHODS: A prospective cohort study included 450 primigravida women in active labor attending the Faculty of Medicine Cairo University Hospital between January 2013 and August 2014. Women were divided into three groups based on medical examination upon admission. Group I (Control) included 150 uncut

The experience of maternity care for migrant women living with female genital mutilation: A qualitative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of childbearing women with a history of female genital mutilation (FGM) are accessing maternity services in high-income countries across the world. For many of these women, their first contact with the health services in their host country is when they are pregnant. While the clinical consequences of certain categories of FGM are well documented, how high-risk maternity services - designed to mitigate the obstetric consequences of FGM - impact upon women's experience of childbearing is less clear. METHODS: Using a meta-synthesis approach, this paper synthesizes

Are Physicians Blameworthy for Iatrogenic Harm Resulting from Unnecessary Genital Surgeries?

We argue that physicians should, in certain cases, be held accountable by patients and their families for harm caused by "successful" genital surgeries performed for social and aesthetic reasons. We explore the question of physicians' blameworthiness for three types of genital surgeries common in the United States. First, we consider surgeries performed on newborns and toddlers with atypical sex development, or intersex. Second, we discuss routine neonatal male circumcision. Finally, we consider cosmetic vaginal surgery. It is important for physicians not just to know when and why to perform g

Major surgical complications from minor urological procedures.

Some urological procedures are regarded as minor or simple. As a result, these may be delegated to trainee surgeons to do. Occasionally nonmedical persons embark on some of the procedures such as male circumcision. Published serious complications from urological procedures considered minor or simple were identified from a Medline search (1966 through 1999) and reference lists of relevant publications. The operations regarded as minor were carried out by medical personnel of all grades as well as by nonmedical persons. The complications can be classified as mutilatory, infective, hemorrhagic, o

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. A complication of circumcision.

Numerous complications have been reported as a result of neonatal circumcision. We describe here three cases of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome that were thought to be due to infected circumcisions. A review of the literature failed to disclose descriptions of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome as such a complication. In spite of recent American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations against routine circumcision, it will continue to be a common procedure. Careful preoperative and postoperative screening and guidance are urged to prevent staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and other comp

Virility, pleasure and female genital mutilation/cutting. A qualitative study of perceptions and experiences of medicalized defibulation among Somali and Sudanese migrants in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The most pervasive form of female genital mutilation/cutting-infibulation-involves the almost complete closure of the vaginal orifice by cutting and closing the labia to create a skin seal. A small opening remains for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. This physical closure has to be re-opened-defibulated-later in life. When they marry, a partial opening is made to enable sexual intercourse. The husband commonly uses his penis to create this opening. In some settings, a circumciser or traditional midwife opens the infibulated scar with a knife or razor blade. Later, during c

Female genital cutting in southern urban and peri-urban Nigeria: self-reported validity, social determinants and secular decline.

Despite growing public resistance to the practice of female genital cutting (FGC), documentation of its prevalence, social correlates or trends in practice are extremely limited, and most available data are based on self-reporting. In three antenatal and three family planning clinics in South-west Nigeria we studied the prevalence, social determinants, and validity of self-reporting for FGC among 1709 women. Women were interviewed on social and demographic history, and whether or not they had undergone FGC. Interviews were followed by clinical examination to affirm the occurrence and extent of

Concordance between self-assessment using watercolor illustrations and clinical examination: implementing a visual tool to improve recognition and communication on female genital mutilation/cutting.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate identification and reporting of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) are essential for clinical care, documentation, and epidemiological research, yet self-reporting of FGM/C type remains unreliable and may benefit from visual support tools. This study aimed to evaluate the concordance between women's self-assessed FGM/C type using a watercolor-based visual tool and the World Health Organization classification determined by clinical examination. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study including women with a history of FGM/C. Participants self-assess
