"One more front in the dirty war": The political instrumentalisation of psychiatry and the involvement of mental health professionals in state-sponsored human rights abuses during Argentina's civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983).

This paper examines the instrumentalisation of psychiatric procedures and the complicity of physicians and mental health professionals in the state-sponsored terror of Argentina's civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983). Hitherto, these episodes have remained largely underexplored in broader historiography, as have their implications for modern psychiatric ethics. Drawing on archival records, victim testimonies, and secondary sources, this paper outlines how mental health expertise and psychiatric institutions were implicated in the junta's campaigns to subjugate perceived "subversive" tendenc

Prevalence of open neural tube defects and risk factors related to isolated anencephaly and spina bifida in live births from the "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca" Civil Hospital of Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico).

We determine the prevalence and trends of open neural tube defects (ONTDs) during 1991 to 2019 at the "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca" Civil Hospital of Guadalajara (Mexico). Also, details of potential risks were obtained in 662 newborns, including those 143 patients with anencephaly and open spina bifida (OSB) classified as isolated (cases) and 519 controls. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Among 267 201 live births during the study period, 336 were born with ONTDs, yielding an overall prevalence of 12.6 per 10 000. After folic acid (FA)-related programs began in Mexico (2003

[Health risks related to milk consumption: a critical evaluation from the medical perspective].

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiological studies associate the consumption of non-fermented cow's milk, but not fermented milk products, with an increased risk of diseases of civilization. OBJECTIVES: Presentation of epidemiological and pathophysiological data on health risks associated with milk consumption. METHOD: Selective PubMed surveys between 2005-2020 considering epidemiological studies which clearly differentiate between non-fermented versus fermented milk and its potential health risks. RESULTS: Epidemiological studies confirm a correlation between milk consumption and birthweight, line…

Early initiation of fast-track care for persons living with HIV initiating dolutegravir-based regimens during a period of severe civil unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti: a pilot randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiated service delivery (DSD) models have been widely implemented for patients in stable HIV care. However, DSD has rarely been offered to newly diagnosed patients. We assessed the effectiveness of early fast-track care during a period of severe civil unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized trial among adults presenting with early HIV disease to determine whether early fast-track care (8-12 weeks after same-day HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy [ART] initiation) was associated with superior outcomes compared with standard (deferred

Prevalence, aetiology, vaccination coverage and spatio-temporal pattern among patients admitted with acute bacterial meningitis to the sentinel hospital surveillance network in Yemen, 2014-20, before and during the civil war.

BACKGROUND: Acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) is a serious health issue in Yemen where civil war, which continues unabated, has crippled the healthcare system. We conducted a nationwide retrospective observational study in Yemeni sentinel hospitals to identify the prevalence, aetiology, vaccination coverage and spatio-temporal pattern of ABM in children aged <5 years before and during the civil war, 2014-20. METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected from hospitalized children and were analysed macroscopically for appearance and microscopically by Gram stain and white blood cell count

Butterfly effect and acne-The role of diet.

The authors aim to present the butterfly effect, a concept based on the theory that small changes might have a powerful effect, as an example of the important connection between diet and acne. Western diet is currently a well-known environmental factor which, mainly via the overstimulation of mTORC1 (mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1), is responsible for the development and aggravation of acne and other age-related diseases of civilization. From the authors' point of view, "the butterfly effect" extrapolated to acne and diet depicts the importance of dietary interventions in acne so as t…

Implementing safe obstetric anesthesia in Eastern Europe.

The position of woman in any civilization is an index of the advancement of that civilization; the position of woman is gauged best by the care given her at the birth of her child. Obstetric anesthesia, by definition, is a subspecialty of anesthesia devoted to peripartum, perioperative, pain and anesthetic management of women during pregnancy and the puerperium. Today, obstetric anesthesia has become a recognized subspecialty of anesthesiology and an integral part of practice of most anesthesiologists. Perhaps, no other subspecialty of anesthesiology provides more personal gratification than t…

[Role of bilirubin in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer].

Oxidative stress contributes importantly to pathogenesis of numerous civilization diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, as well as autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions. Bilirubin is the major product of the heme catabolic pathway in the intravascular compartment. For long time, bilirubin was considered to be only a waste product, however, recent data from the last two decades have proved its important protective properties, which contributes to defense against development of civilization diseases. Numerous experimental as well as clinical studies have demonstrated associa…

Regulation of human sexual behaviour, sex revolution and emergence of AIDS: a historical perspective.

No Society in the World permits fully free sexual behaviour. All societies utilize a variety of ways for regulation of sexual behaviour. This has been happening since antiquity. Culture also affects sexual behaviour. In western civilization there was a healthly outlook towards sexuality during Greco-Roman era. In Indian civilization also human sexuality was considered an inseparable part of life and was given a higher place in human life. Many treatises on human sexuality were written. Sex was considered as an art and was given an exalted status through the medium of sculpture work in temples …

The history of epidemic typhus.

Few infectious diseases have influenced human civilization to the same degree as louse-transmitted typhus. Rickettsia prowazekii continues to strikes tens to hundreds of thousands of persons who live with war, famine, crowding, and in squalid conditions associated with social unrest, with mortality rates in excess of 10% to 15%. Historical documents confirm that such devastation has been a continuous feature of human existence to the extent that typhus has been a major determinant in the outcome of many wars, altering human history in its wake-despite incomplete knowledge of its precise origin…

The overlooked bacterial pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant economic and health impact worldwide. It also reinforced the misperception that only viruses can pose a threat to human existence, overlooking that bacteria (e.g., plague and cholera) have severely haunted and shaped the course of human civilization. While the world is preparing for the next viral pandemic, it is again overlooking a silent one: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This review proposes to show the impact of bacterial infections on civilization to remind the pandemic potential. The work will also discuss a few examples of how bacteria can mutat…

From morphology of human body to reshaping a morphology of the society: heritage in the field of pathology of infectious diseases of Wilhelm Ebstein and work of councilman Sigismund Asch. A story how to counteract epidemics and to transform feudal system into civil democracy.

Collected, primary resources enabled us to extract data that are scarcely present in medical literature of the two Breslauer morphologists of both the human body and - metaphorically - the society: Wilhelm Ebstein (1836-1912) and Sigismund Asch (1825-1901), particularly the latter, who described morphology of melanosis in his doctoral dissertation in 1846, to switch on reshaping social morphology of Wrocław (Breslau) in Virchow-like manner. In contrast to the main perspective of Ebstein's anomaly that has been finely described in past biographical papers, a primary aspect of infectious disease

The origin of human pathogens: evaluating the role of agriculture and domestic animals in the evolution of human disease.

Many significant diseases of human civilization are thought to have arisen concurrently with the advent of agriculture in human society. It has been hypothesised that the food produced by farming increased population sizes to allow the maintenance of virulent pathogens, i.e. civilization pathogens, while domestic animals provided sources of disease to humans. To determine the relationship between pathogens in humans and domestic animals, I examined phylogenetic data for several human pathogens that are commonly evolutionarily linked to domestic animals: measles, pertussis, smallpox, tuberculos…

Diet in acne: further evidence for the role of nutrient signalling in acne pathogenesis.

Recent evidence underlines the role of Western diet in the pathogenesis of acne. Acne is absent in populations consuming Palaeolithic diets … signalling due to milk protein consumption. Acne should be regarded as an mTORC1-driven disease of civilization, like obesity, type 2 diabetes and cancer induced by Western diet. Early dietary counselling of teenage acne patients is thus a great opportunity for dermatology, which will not only help to improve acne but may reduce the long-term adverse effects …

The current sociocultural background of eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex phenomena that are partly influenced by sociocultural factors.
