Qualitative analysis of resilience characteristics of people with unilateral transtibial amputation.

BACKGROUND: Resilience characteristics are a significant factor in the highly variable rehabilitation outcomes for people in middle age or later with transtibial amputation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe resilience characteristics meaningful to people with transtibial amputation in middle age or later, who use a prosthesis. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted, audio recorded, and transcribed with eighteen participants. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed using a directed content analysis approach, guided by Charney's theory of resilience and Co

The role of executive function domains on cognitive and gait performance during dual task walking in healthy young adults: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Dual-task walking (DTW) is commonly used to assess EF, yet most research has focused either on motor task difficulty or the influence of a single EF domain. This study addresses the gap by examining multiple EF domains during DTW. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of different executive function (EF) domains on dual-task walking (DTW) in healthy young adults. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 29 healthy young adults completed tasks representing inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, both individually and while walking. Correct response speed (CRS

No Evidence for Cognitive Impairment in an Experimental Rat Model of Knee Osteoarthritis and Associated Chronic Pain.

Although chronic pain states have been associated with impaired cognitive functions, including memory and cognitive flexibility, the cognitive effects of osteoarthritis (OA) pain remain to be clarified. The aim of this study was to measure cognitive function in the mono-iodoacetate (MIA) rat model of chronic OA-like knee pain. We used young adult male Lister hooded rats, which are well-suited for cognitive testing. Rats received either a unilateral knee injection of MIA (3 mg/50 µL) or saline as control. Joint pain at rest was assessed for up to 12 weeks, using weight-bearing asymmetry, and re

Distinct subgroups of adolescents' psychological maltreatment, emotional problems, and emotion dysregulation: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychological maltreatment (PM) is a multidimensional construct that includes both cognitive and emotional aspects of maltreatment. It has devastating effects on individuals, which differ from one person to another. Utilizing latent profile analysis (LPA) facilitates exploring interactions among latent subgroups. However, few studies have investigated this construct using a person-centered approach. METHODS: Therefore, in the present study, we conceptualized a multidimensional construct and utilized LPA that includes PM, emotional problems (i.e., depression, anxiety, negative self-

Sensory Processing and Performance-Based Executive Functioning in Adolescent Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: An Integrated Assessment.

Prior research in pediatric OCD has addressed sensory processing characteristics and executive functions (EF), typically within separate lines of investigation. This study examined the interrelationships among OCD symptom severity, sensory processing characteristics, and performance-based EF in adolescents with OCD and assessed whether sensory processing and symptom severity are associated with executive outcomes. One hundred adolescents aged 12-18 years meeting DSM-5 criteria exclusively for OCD were assessed. Symptom severity was measured with the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive S

Direct effects of dyscalculia on executive functions: revisiting mediation models.

Dyscalculia, a specific learning disability in mathematics, is linked to deficits in executive functions, yet integrative studies in Arabic-speaking contexts remain scarce. This study examined working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility collectively in children with dyscalculia. Using 64 children (32 per group), advanced techniques including Ridge regression, PCA, and ROC analysis assessed these functions. Both groups demonstrated average intelligence (Raven's Progressive Matrices), with the dyscalculia group showing profound mathematical deficits across nine arithmetic domains. Sign

Turning Work Challenges into Creativity: The Joint Role of Challenge Stress and Problem-Solving Pondering.

Previous studies have yielded inconsistent conclusions regarding the relationship between challenge stress and work creativity, suggesting that the effects may depend on contextual and individual conditions. Drawing on the strategy-situation fit hypothesis, this study examines the joint effects of challenge stress and problem-solving pondering on work creativity and further investigates the mediating role of cognitive flexibility. Using a two-wave time-lagged design with a two-month interval, this study ultimately obtained 568 valid responses. The results showed the following: (1) Work creativ

Autistic and non-autistic children's perceptual decision-making in visual orientation and motion tasks and the effect of task instructions.

Diffusion decision models (DDMs) offer the potential to go beyond standard accuracy and response-time indices to better understand perceptual decision-making in autism. One unanswered question is whether autistic participants can flexibly adjust the speed and accuracy of their decision-making according to task demands. Across two preregistered studies, 50 autistic and 50 non-autistic children aged 6-14 years completed a visual orientation task with no explicit instructions to be fast or accurate, and a visual motion task under both speed-emphasis and accuracy-emphasis instructions. These studi

From dampening to rigidity: How responses to positive emotion shape interpretations of ambiguous social situations.

Interpretation biases and inflexibility in resolving ambiguous social situations are central to cognitive models of depression and anxiety, yet the mechanisms that shape these interpretation processes remain insufficiently understood. This preregistered experiment tested whether experimentally inducing dampening versus amplifying responses to positive emotion causally influences how people interpret and update ambiguous social information. Dutch adults (n = 268) completed a positive autobiographical memory induction and were randomly assigned to a dampening, amplifying, or control condition. P

Longitudinal Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Sleep Problems in Adolescents Following a Natural Disaster: Understanding the Role of Psychological Inflexibility.

Previous studies have investigated the temporal associations between depressive symptoms and sleep problems in traumatized adolescents. However, controversy remains regarding the directionality and underlying mechanisms of these associations, because within- and between-individual effects have not been differentiated. To examine this issue, the current study used the random-intercept cross lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to assess the temporal associations between depressive symptoms, sleep problems and psychological inflexibility in adolescents following Typhoon Lekima. A sample of 1,341 adolesc

Altered reversal and extinction learning in the DMSXL mouse model of type I myotonic dystrophy (DM1): An exploratory study.

BackgroundCognitive changes in type 1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1) have a pronounced negative effect on quality of life measures. Despite this, the neural basis of these changes is poorly understood. DM1 patients demonstrate deficits in motivation and cognitive flexibility, reflective of apathy and obsessive-compulsive / autistic-like traits.ObjectiveThese traits can be readily assessed using reversal learning and appetitive extinction tasks. Reversal learning assesses the ability to learn following a change in a rule and can evaluate cognitive flexibility and habitual responding, while appetitive

A latent profile analysis of moral emotions following moral transgressions.

OBJECTIVE: Moral transgressions (MTs), events that violate one's moral code, are associated with the moral emotions of guilt and shame. However, there may be different patterns by which people experience guilt and shame that affect distress following MTs. METHOD: Undergraduates (N = 1371) exposed to an MT completed self-report assessments. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to examine profiles based on guilt cognitions, internalized shame, and distress in relation to a reported MT. Cognitive flexibility, years since the MT, and deliberate and intrusive rumination were examined as v

Lesions to the Fronto-Parietal Network Impact Alpha-Band Phase Synchrony and Cognitive Control.

Long-range phase synchrony in the α-oscillation band (near 10 Hz) has been proposed to facilitate information integration across anatomically segregated regions. Which areas may top-down regulate such cross-regional integration is largely unknown. We previously found that the moment-to-moment strength of high-α band (10-12 Hz) phase synchrony co-varies with activity in a fronto-parietal (FP) network. This network is critical for adaptive cognitive control functions such as cognitive flexibility required during set-shifting. Using electroencephalography (EEG) in 23 patients with focal frontal l

The role of dopamine in motor flexibility.

Humans carry out many daily tasks in a seemingly automatic fashion. However, when unexpected changes in the environment occur, we have the capacity to inhibit prepotent behavior and replace it with an alternative one. Such behavioral flexibility is a hallmark of executive functions. The neurotransmitter dopamine is known to be crucial for fast, efficient, and accurate cognitive flexibility. Despite the perceived similarities between cognitive and motor flexibility, less is known regarding the role of dopamine within the motor domain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the role o

A Critical Examination of the Usefulness of Taxonomies for Comparing Cognitive Functions Across Sports.

Taxonomies are widely used in sport science to classify disciplines according to structural, cognitive, and physiological demands, yet their robustness in differentiating athletes' cognitive performance remains uncertain. This study examined whether commonly applied sport classification frameworks-open versus closed skills, strategic-static-interceptive, participant classification, and multidimensional team/precision-skill/speed-strength-meaningfully represent cognitive differences within junior and senior national squad athletes. A total of 595 national squad athletes from eight sports (artis

Relationships Between Coping Flexibility, Distress, and Bedtime Procrastination: A Longitudinal Study.

Bedtime procrastination-the tendency to delay or put off going to bed-causes or promotes poor sleep quality and leads to distress. Coping flexibility, which is the ability to modify coping strategies according to stressful situations, can reduce distress induced by stressful situations. No studies have examined the relationship between coping flexibility and bedtime procrastination. This study aimed to examine the relationships between coping flexibility, distress, and bedtime procrastination. We hypothesized that higher coping flexibility would be associated with lower bedtime procrastination
