Coxiella burnetii and coinfections in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Central Germany.

A total of 1000 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected in 2006 and 2007 in a forest region of Central Germany and investigated for Coxiella burnetii. The transposase element IS1111 and isocitrate dehydrogenase gene were targets of the real-time polymerase chain reaction. The pathogen was detected in 19 ticks (1.9%), and interestingly, in 10 of these samples, coinfections with Borrelia spp., spotted fever group rickettsiae, or Babesia spp. were present. Our study reports on C. burnetii infections in I. ricinus ticks in an area where cases of Q fever occur regularly and Dermacentor marginatus is no…

Therapy insight: Management of hepatitis C in patients coinfected with HIV.

Infection with HCV is common in HIV-infected patients and is an increasingly important public health problem. The medical management of hepatitis C in HIV-infected patients is complicated by immune suppression, potential drug interactions and toxicities, and the relative paucity of health-care providers with expertise in the management of both diseases. Nonetheless, there are now data to support the safety, tolerability and efficacy of hepatitis C treatment with peginterferon plus ribavirin in HIV-infected patients, and the impetus to treat these patients is, therefore, strong. Although the st

Fatal pneumonia in an AIDS patient coinfected with adenovirus and Pneumocystis carinii.

BACKGROUND: Adenovirus infections are common in immunocompromised hosts. However, pulmonary adenovirus infections rarely cause significant m … s in addition to P. carinii. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates a pathogenetic role for adenovirus coinfection in P. carinii pneumonia (PCP). Earlier diagnosis, e.g. by PCR analysis of the BAL fluid or transbronchial biopsy, might have led to the consideration of ribavirin treatment.

Coinfection of visceral leishmaniasis and Mycobacterium in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

We report a case of coinfection of visceral leishmaniasis and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare in the same lesions in the small bowel and bone marrow of a 33-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who complained of abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea. The duodenal mucosa and bone marrow biopsy specimens showed numerous foamy macrophages packed with two forms of microorganisms that were identified histologically and ultrastructurally as Leishmania and Mycobacterium species. Visceral leishmaniasis is rarely suspected in patients residing in nonendemic countries including the Unit…

Coinfection of the immunocompromised but not the immunocompetent host by multiple human cytomegalovirus strains.

Coinfection by multiple human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) strains was investigated in immunocompetent individuals and AIDS patients. Thirty HCMV maternal and fetal or newborn isolate pairs from 9 cases of congenital HCMV infection as well as 36 HCMV isolates and 2 PCR-HCMV-positive CSF samples from 13 AIDS patients were tested by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of multiple genome regions. Results from the group of congenital infections showed that: i) all the 9 women with primary HCMV infection presumably harboured a single HCMV strain; ii) all strains were genetically unrelated; …

Association of Helicobacter pylori Coinfection With Tuberculosis Disease Severity and Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (HP) has immunomodulatory properties, but its relationship with tuberculosis (TB) severity and outcomes remains uncertain. We evaluated the association between HP infection and TB severity and explored factors associated with HP coinfection and TB treatment outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled adults (≥ 18 years) with drug-sensitive, newly diagnosed, bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB from two public clinics in Uganda. HP infection was determined using stool antigen testing. Severe TB was defined as GeneXpert cycle threshold < 16 or smear grade 3+ (microbiologi…

Coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 among patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae in Casablanca.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, coinfections with Streptococcus pneumoniae have emerged as a significant public health concern. The impact of these coinfections on disease severity and mortality rates remains underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the clinical outcomes of patients coinfected with S. pneumoniae and SARS-CoV-2 at CHU Ibn Rochd in Casablanca, Morocco, between 2020 and 2022. METHODS: A cohort of 120 hospitalized patients diagnosed with S. pneumoniae infection was studied retrospectively and prospectively. Clinical and demogr…

Targeting TLR7 reprograms macrophage function to attenuate influenza-associated Staphylococcus aureus coinfection.

Secondary bacterial pneumonia is a common cause of influenza infection associated deaths. This study investigated the potential therapeutic role of inhibiting toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) in influenza-associated Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) coinfection. Both TLR7 deficiency and TLR7 antagonist IRS661 treatment significantly improved survival in mice coinfected with influenza virus (PR8) and S.aureus while significantly reducing pulmonary damage as evidenced by decreased total protein (TP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum alanine aminotr…

Knee Septic Arthritis Caused by Coinfection with Rothia mucilaginosa and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.

Introduction: Septic arthritis of the knee caused by the combination of Rothia mucilaginosa and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is extremely rare. E. rhusiopathiae is a rare zoonotic pathogen that primarily affects individuals with occupational exposure to animals, while R. mucilaginosa can cause severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Case Presentation: A 59-year-old male underwent right knee arthroscopy in 2019 due to meniscal degeneration. Two weeks later, activity-related pain appeared. Magnetic resonance imaging showed proliferative synovitis, and joint aspiration reve

Unveiling Hyperinflammation in Severe Dengue With Coinfection Among Children: A Case Series.

Dengue illness follows three phases: febrile, critical, and convalescent. Coinfection and hyperinflammatory response are common causes of the persistence of fever beyond the febrile phase of dengue. However, finding both these causes together in severe dengue cases is rarely reported in the literature. We present three cases of severe dengue who presented with persistent fever. The first case is of a 14-year-old girl who presented with dengue shock and culture-proven Acinetobacter sepsis. Later she was diagnosed with a hyperinflammatory response to infection and improved after intravenous immu…
