Post-pregnancy recurrent biliary colic with intraoperative diagnosis of limy bile syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Limy bile syndrome (LBS) is an unusual condition in which gallbladder and/or bile ducts are filled with paste-like radiopaque material with a high calcium carbonate content. It can be rarely associated with PTH disorder and hypercalcemia. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 35-year-old woman presented with epigastric and right hypochondrium pain since a few hours. Similar attacks occurred in the past months soon after a pregnancy with vaginal delivery. Laboratory findings were not significant. The abdominal ultrasound highlighted a micro-lithiasis of gallbladder without complications. Consi

Middle Colic Artery Originating from the Gastroduodenal Artery Discovered during a Whipple.

Hepatic artery variations occur in about one-fourth of the population, are frequent questions on standardized surgery exams, and are often d … as incidentally diagnosed with a cystic pancreatic lesion. During the operation, an aberrant middle colic artery was found to be originating from the gastroduodenal artery instead of its usual origin at the superior mesenteric artery. This anomalous middle colic artery has not been previously reported in a live patient. It underscores the importance of …

Laparoscopic plug removal for femoral nerve colic pain after mesh & plug hernioplasty.

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernias account for 75% of abdominal wall hernias, with a lifetime risk of 27% in men and 3% in women. Major complications are recurrence, chronic pain, and surgical site infection, but their frequency is low. Few studies have reported a calcified mesh causing neuropathy by chronic compression of the femoral nerve after mesh & plug inguinal hernia repair. This is the first report of laparoscopic plug removal for femoral colic due to femoral nerve irritation cause by a calcified plug after mesh & plug inguinal hernia repair. CASE PRESENTATION: In July 2013, a 53-year-old m…

Endovascular embolization of pseudoaneurysm of left colic artery developing after renal biopsy.

Vascular complications after percutaneous renal biopsy are uncommon and may require interventional management. In most of these cases, the pathology is a renal arterial pseudoaneurysm (PsA) or an arterio-venous fistula. Injury to other vessels like aorta, lumbar arteries or mesenteric arteries is rare with only one case of left colic artery PsA reported in literature. We report a case of a 60-year-old female, who developed left colic artery PsA after renal biopsy, which was successfully embolized through endovascular route using microcoils.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and non-opioids for acute renal colic.

BACKGROUND: Renal colic is acute pain caused by urinary stones. The prevalence of urinary stones is between 10% and 15% in the United States, making renal colic one of the common reasons for urgent urological care. The pain is usually severe and the first step in the management is adequate analgesia. Many different classes of medications have been used in this regard including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and narcotics. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess benefits and harms of different NSAIDs and non-opioids in the treatment of adult patients with acute renal colic and …

Anorectal lymphadenopathy causing colic, perirectal abscesses, or both in five young horses.

Enlarged anorectal lymph nodes can cause colic in young horses by obstructing the caudal aspect of the rectum. Dyschezia and clinical signs consistent with abdominal pain were the predominant reasons for evaluation of the 5 young (3 to 15 month old) horses of this report. Digital transrectal palpation revealed a firm mass obstructing the caudal aspect of the rectum in each horse. Results of cytologic evaluation of the masses revealed a lymphoid population of cells in 4 of 5 horses. These nodes regressed over time or became abscesses and drained into the rectum. In 1 horse, detection of a matur…

Surgical treatment of colic in American miniature horses: 15 cases (1980-1987).

A study of 15 American miniature horses (AMH) that underwent surgical treatment for colic was performed. Information obtained from the medical records included signalment, clinical signs, type and location of gastrointestinal lesion, and postoperative complications. All 15 AMH had intraluminal obstructions, attributable to feed impactions (11 horses), enteroliths (2), and sand (2). The most common location of obstruction was the small colon, which was involved in 9 of the 15 cases. All 15 AMH survived and were discharged from the hospital. Six of the 15 AMH underwent subsequent surgical treatm…

Giant lipoma of the right colic flexure with intussusception: a case described by ultrasound.

Colonic lipomas are rare benign tumors of mesenchymal origin. They typically present as solitary submucosal lesions, most frequently located in the proximal colon, and generally measure less than 2 cm in diameter. When their size exceeds 4 cm, they are defined as giant lipomas and may become symptomatic, causing nonspecific gastrointestinal manifestations such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, or intermittent bleeding. We report the case of a patient with abdominal pain predominantly localized to the right upper quadrant, with symptom onset approximately two weeks earlier. Intestinal

Associations of Infant Colic and Excessive Crying With Atopic Outcomes in Childhood and Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which risks of atopic and respiratory conditions throughout childhood and adolescence differ by history of (1) infant colic, characterized by apparent abdominal discomfort and unsoothable crying, (2) excessive crying without colic, or (3) neither condition. STUDY DESIGN: Among 1249 children participating in the prospective, unselected Project Viva cohort, we examined associations of history of infant colic or excessive crying without colic with risks of eczema, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and respiratory infections, measured in toddlerhood, early childhood, m…

The Incidence and Risk Factors for Emergency Department Imaging in Acute Renal Colic.

Objective: To determine the incidence of and risk factors for imaging in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with renal colic. Subject/Patients and Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study in the province of Ontario, utilizing linked administrative health data. Patients who presented to an ED with renal colic between April 1, 2010, and June 30, 2020, were included. The rate of initial imaging (CT scans and ultrasound [U/S]) and repeat imaging within 30 days was determined. Generalized linear models were utilized to evaluate patient and institutional-level characte…

Preservation of left colic artery in laparoscopic colorectal operation: The benefit challenge.

BACKGROUND: During laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer, there is controversy regarding whether the left colic artery (LCA) should be preserved at its origin. AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of preservation of the LCA in colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups. The high ligation (H-L) technique (refers to ligation performed 1 cm from the beginning of the inferior mesenteric artery) group consisted of 46 patients, and the low ligation (L-L) technique (refers to ligation performed below the initiation of the LCA) group consisted of 148 …

The role of breast milk beta-endorphin and relaxin-2 on infant colic.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between infant colic and breast milk beta-endorphin (BE) and relaxin-2 (RLX-2) has not been studied before. METHODS: Thirty colic infants and their mothers constituted the study group, and the same sex, similar age and healthy infants and their mothers formed the control group. Maternal predisposing factors were analysed with questionnaires. RESULTS: The frequency of headache and myalgia in the mothers was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group. Sleep quality of mothers in the study group was worse than in the control group (p = 0.0…

Sterile water injections for management of renal colic pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1950s a small number of centres have used sterile water injections (SWI) to treat renal colic pain. We undertook this review to determine the efficacy of SWI to manage the pain of renal colic. METHODS: We searched the electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane Central Register, CINAHL, and Scopus from database inception to 7 November 2021 for randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Six trials were included in the review (n = 894 patients). Two placebo controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis. Other trials compared SWI to Diclofenac,…
