Milk supplemented with immune colostrum: protection against rotavirus diarrhea and modulatory effect on the systemic and mucosal antibody responses in calves experimentally challenged with bovine rotavirus.

Group A bovine rotavirus (BRV) is the major cause of neonatal calf diarrhea worldwide. As a preventive strategy, we evaluated the protection and immunomodulation in two groups of BRV-inoculated calves. All calves received control colostrum (CC; VN=65,536; IgG(1)=16,384) prior to gut closure followed by the milk supplemented with immune colostrum (VN=1,048,576; IgG(1)=262,144), twice a day, for 14 days. Calves received milk supplemented with 0.8% immune colostrum [(Gp 1) VN=16,384; IgG(1)=4096] or milk supplemented with 0.4% immune colostrum [(Gp 2) VN=1024; IgG(1)=1024]. Calves receiving CC or…

Metabolomics reveals changes in levels of fecal branched chain amino acids and organic acids in very preterm infants fed human milk fortified with bovine colostrum.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Human milk is the optimal diet for very preterm infants (VPIs), but it requires nutrient fortification to support growth. Bovine colostrum (BC), rich in intact proteins and bioactive components, could serve as a novel fortifier with potential benefits to VPIs gut health. To evaluate a possible effect of feeding BC on intestinal metabolism, the gut microbiota, and their interaction, we studied the fecal metabolome of VPIs in the first month of life, as compared with a conventional fortifier (CF, based on infant formula ingredients). METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from…

An Investigation of Fatty Acids, Crude Protein and Total Solids in Colostrum in Relation to Health Status Regarding Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome and Certain Parity Groups of Sows.

Colostrum is the main source of nutrients and proteins for newborn piglets. To give each piglet the best possible start in life, it is necessary to evaluate the colostrum according to quality. This has to be done by analysing the components, as component composition is a main quality parameter. To achieve this aim, in this study, the content of total solids, crude protein and 24 fatty acids in colostrum samples was analysed. The colostrum samples from 334 sows were classified according to the parity of the donor sow. Parity group 1 contained parity 1 and 2 sows (n = 93), parity group 2 contain…

The Detection of Vaccine Virus and Protection of a Modified Live, Intranasal, Trivalent Vaccine in Neonatal, Colostrum-Fed Calves with an Experimental Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus Challenge.

The efficacy of an intranasal (IN) bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) vaccine administered in the presence of passive immunity was assessed. Pooled colostrum was administered by intubation to 50 beef-dairy crossbred calves the day they were born. The calves were transported to a research facility and were blocked by age and sex, and randomly assigned into two groups: sham-vaccinated intranasally with a placebo (sterile water) or vaccinated with a trivalent (BRSV, bovine herpesvirus 1 and bovine parainfluenza 3) modified live viral (MLV) vaccine. The calves were 9 ± 2 days old when vacci…

Systemic immune markers and infection risk in preterm infants fed human milk fortified with bovine colostrum or conventional fortifier, a secondary analysis of the FortiColos trial.

BACKGROUND: For very preterm infants, human milk is often fortified with formula products based on processed bovine milk. Intact bovine colostrum (BC), rich in anti-inflammatory milk factors, is considered an alternative. We investigated if BC affects anti-inflammatory/TH2 immunity and infection risk in very preterm infants. METHODS: For a secondary analysis of a multicenter, randomized controlled trial (NCT03537365), very preterm infants (26-31 weeks gestation, 23% small for gestational age, SGA) were randomized to receive BC (ColoDan, Biofiber, Denmark, n = 113) or conventional fortifier (P…

Short communication: Effect of delaying the first colostrum feeding on small intestinal histomorphology and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations in neonatal male Holstein calves.

The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of delaying the first colostrum feeding on small intestinal histomorphology and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations, and the secondary objective was to characterize the ultrastructure of the small intestine of neonatal calves at 51 h of life. Twenty-seven male Holstein calves were fed pooled, pasteurized colostrum (7.5% of birth body weight; 62 g of IgG/L) at 45 min (0H, n = 9), 6 h (6H, n = 9), or 12 h (12H, n = 9) after birth. At 12 h after their respective colostrum feeding, calves were fed milk replacer a…

Feeding colostrum or a 1:1 colostrum:whole milk mixture for 3 days after birth increases serum immunoglobulin G and apparent immunoglobulin G persistency in Holstein bulls.

Conflicting reports exist on whether prolonged IgG consumption can further increase serum IgG in neonatal calves. Given that higher serum IgG in neonates has lifelong benefits, our objective was to determine whether serum IgG can be increased by providing multiple meals containing IgG to neonatal calves. Twenty-seven Holstein bulls were all fed 1 colostrum meal (7.5% body weight; 62 g of IgG/L) at 2 h after birth and randomly assigned to be fed (5% body weight) colostrum (COL; n = 9), whole milk (WM; n = 9), or a 1:1 colostrum:whole milk mixture (MX; n = 9) every 12 h from 12 to 72 h. Effect of N-Carbamylglutamate Supplementation in Late Pregnancy on Nutrient-Restricted Twin-Bearing Ewes on the Pre-Lambing Maternal Metabolome, Colostrum Quality and Lamb Birth Weight.

Arginine supplementation improves fetal growth and colostrum composition in nutrient-restricted ewes, but its high cost and ruminal degradation limit its practical use. N-carbamylglutamate (NCG), which stimulates endogenous arginine synthesis, and is not degraded in rumen, may be a viable alternative. This study evaluated the effects of oral NCG supplementation (60 mg/kg BW/day from day 100 of gestation to term) on undernourished twin-bearing ewes (~50% NRC requirements; NCG n = 20, Control n = 21). Maternal body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), blood metabolites, placental traits, lam…

Colostrum supplementation with n-3 fatty acids and α-tocopherol alters plasma polyunsaturated fatty acid profile and decreases an indicator of oxidative stress in newborn calves.

Our objective was to characterize the effects of supplementing newborn calves with n-3 fatty acids (FA) and α-tocopherol on blood lipid profiles and oxidant status in early life. Sixteen calves received 0 or 60 mL of 1:1 fish and flaxseed oil with 200 mg of α-tocopherol in 2.8 L of colostrum within 6 h after birth. Colostrum was >22% on the Brix scale. Blood was sampled on d 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 21 after birth for assessment of plasma polyunsaturated FA, α-tocopherol, total serum protein, and oxidant status index, an indirect indicator of oxidative stress that examines the balance between the c…

Effects of porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus vaccination timing and route of administration on colostrum antibody levels and prevention of diarrhoea in piglets on a pig farm with porcine epidemic diarrhoea.

Piglets rely on passive immunity acquired from maternal-derived antibodies obtained by ingesting colostrum and milk from immunised sows. This study evaluated the differences in colostrum antibody profiles (IgA, IgG, and neutralising antibodies) according to the timing, frequency, and administration route of the porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) vaccination in pigs with confirmed PEDV infection, and to assess the corresponding clinical protective effects of PEDV vaccination in neonatal piglets. Piglets of sows that received two or more vaccinations, including an oral administration of a l…

A simple, inexpensive, and rapid method for measuring calcium concentrations in colostrum to predict postpartum milk fever in cows using a commercially available water quality test device.

To diagnose milk fever (MF) in dairy cows under clinical practice, measurement of ionized calcium concentrations in blood using point-of-care (POC) devices is required. However, blood sampling poses a significant financial burden on farmers and increases the workload of veterinarians who must visit farms to perform the examinations. The present study aimed to evaluate whether the onset of MF could be predicted using colostrum samples, which can be collected by farmers themselves. Total calcium (tCa) concentrations in colostrum were measured using a commercially available water quality test dev…

Effect of proline rich polypeptide from ovine colostrum on virus replication in human placenta and amniotic membrane at term; possible role of endogenous tumour necrosis factor alpha.

Freshly prepared organ cultures of human placentae and amniotic membranes at term show different sensitivity to vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection. In six of 16 amniotic membranes and seven of 17 placentae VSV replicated to relatively high titres (10(3)-10(6)TCID(50)/ml). The others were partially or completely resistant to virus infection (<10(1)-10(2)TCID(50)/ml). Addition of the immunomodulating agent, proline-rich-polypeptide (PRP) from ovine colostrum to explants freshly obtained from the organs, influenced VSV replication in a manner dependent on the innate immune state of the or…
