We selected 43 patients, aged 15 days to 57 yesrs, for intensive study after screening 975 people for clinical evidence of trachoma in rural Haiti. Trachoma was present in Haiti with low endemicity and was followed by relatively mild sequelae. Laboratory studies confirmed the disease through demonstration of conjunctival inclusion bodies by immunofluoresence and serotyping of antibody in sera or eye secretions, or both. A survey was undertaken among adults aged 20-44 years in a South Wales town. Persons with a history of wheezing with breathlessness and in the absence of a cold were identified by postal questionnaires and seen at a clinic, together with a sample of subjects without these symptoms. Besides the ventricular defects of the "muscular" type with normal pressure values and which close during systole, there are ventricular septal defects in which systolic occlusion might be explained by other mechanisms; there are accompanied either by a stenosis of the outflow tract of the right ventricle (14 cases) or pulmonary hypertension (1 case). The diagnostic data were described, based mainly on the haemodynamic and angiocardiographic study. The hypotheses concerning the mechanism of occlusion in these cases were verified either on post-mortem or operative examinations.

To determine the incidence of Loeffler's syndrome in a tropical region, a survey was conducted over a 1-year period in two locations in Colombia, South America, one inland and urban (Cali), the other rural and coastal (Guapi). Among 700 hospitalized patients, 12,000 patients coming to health centers, and 44 families with 328 members, 4 cases of Loeffler's syndrome were found--3 during the survey and 1 before it began. The most severe outbreak of smallpox in Brazil in 1969 took place in the municipio of Utinga, Bahia. Of 507 cases, 246 occurred in residents of the urban area of the municipio. This paper describes the findings of the detailed study of the urban area outbreak. An inverse relationship between age and susceptibility was evident; fully 91% of the children less than 5 years of age as well as 75% of the school-age children had no history of smallpox and had never been vaccinated.
