Strengthening vaccine uptake: a qualitative assessment of community health worker educational resource needs and community perspectives on vaccination in Western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination strengthens health systems by preventing the spread of infectious diseases and reducing morbidity and mortality. The introduction of the malaria vaccine in Kenya, alongside the growing access to technological tools, offers a timely opportunity to explore the educational needs of community health workers (CHWs) and the feasibility of digital training and health education resources for CHWs. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted among CHWs and community members in two sub-counties in Migori County. In-depth interviews were held with 20 CHWs selected th

Rare childhood diseases: how should we respond?

Paradoxically, rare diseases are common, collectively affecting 6-10% of the population and have a huge impact on patients and families, health services, clinicians and the wider community. Accurate data are required to inform clinical practice, government policy and health service planning. We recommend a national approach, similar to that adopted in the USA and Europe, to support research and promote advocacy and equitable access to services for children with rare diseases.

[A qualitative study on the reasons why the rural people in Nan province use contraceptive].

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons that rural people in Nan Province choose particular contraceptive methods, and places of services. The study utilizes the data from the study on the Impact and Efficiency of the Family Planning Program in Thailand: Phase II, which applied in-depth interview and small group discussion techniques. Findings indicate that wanting to limit the number of children to 2, wanting to space pregnancy, the limit of land, the conflict with working situation, and economic hardship are the reasons for using family planning. The major sources of contrace

1995 Emerging Leaders in Healthcare. The new leaders: Gita Budd, Colene Daniel, Elizabeth Gallup, Scott Wordelman.

Fierce pressures for cost containment. Demands for quality improvements. The drive toward patient-centered care. The push for community involvement. Insistent voices of payers, patients, consumers, physicians. Accumulated tensions amid the chaos of change. Balancing all of these demands while inspiring and encouraging the professionals and other workers within the healthcare organization requires a high level of leadership ability. One that insists on the best from everyone involved in a healthcare system--from physicians to staff, nurses to social workers. And then strives for more. The four

Impact of online community learning programs on TB prevention behaviors.

This study compares an online community learning program with standard community tuberculosis (TB) education to improve TB prevention behaviors. Evidence that digital TB education with peer discussion changes behavior remains limited. A prospective cluster-randomized trial assigned community clusters to the online program or to usual education and referral pathways, with surveys at enrollment and at 3 months. The primary measure was change in a TB prevention behavior index, with an intervention minus control contrast of 0.51 [0.12, 0.9] (p = 0.014). Screening or referral completion was higher

Drive-through Satellite Testing: An Efficient Precautionary Method of Screening Patients for SARS-CoV-2 in a Rural Healthcare Setting.

The first documented case of COVID-19 in the United States occurred on January 30th, 2020. Soon after, a global pandemic was declared in March 2020 with each state issuing stay at home orders based on population, risk for community transmission and current number of positive cases. A priority for each region was to develop efficient systems for testing large patient volumes in a safe manner to reduce the risk of community transmission. A community based United States health care system in the upper mid-west implemented a drive through testing site in an attempt to divert suspected cases of COV

Listening to many voices: qualitative perspectives of Black and Latino community health center patients on serious illness communication.

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate perspectives of Black and Hispanic/Latino patients to improve serious illness communication (SIC) delivery at a community health center. BACKGROUND: The benefits of serious illness communication (SIC) are well described, though access to effective and culturally appropriate SIC remains inequitable. Individuals from historically marginalized communities participate less in advance care planning, experience lower-quality communication, and feel less understood by clinicians. Making SIC more accessible for all patients is an important goal. METHODS: Focus groups were co

Teenage first-time mothers' perceptions about their health care needs in the immediate and early postpartum period in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Teenagers have higher risks for complications during the intrapartum and postpartum periods. Although facility-based postpartum care focusses on preventing complications in mothers and babies, it is not understood what teenage-mothers' perceptions are about their health care needs in the early postpartum period. METHODS: An exploratory descriptive qualitative study was conducted in four health facilities in Uganda. In-depth interviews with 42 first-time teenage mothers aged 14 to 19 years were conducted between March and April 2020. Thematic analysis was done. RESULTS: Two themes

Case Studies of Rapid Community Assessment Implementation to Improve Vaccine Confidence and Demand During the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted 14 rapid community assessments (RCAs) to identify factors affecting COVID-19 vaccine confidence and demand. In May 2022, CDC's COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force conducted case studies of 3 communities to evaluate the RCA's impact and scalability. We convened online semi-structured interviews with 16 health department and community-based organization staff to explore the perceived value of RCAs, suggestions for improving the RCA process, and outcomes. We employed a general inductive analysis method with a priori codes and summarized findi

Continuum of Care for Inmates Taking Psychiatric Medications While Incarcerated in Minnesota County Jails.

Mental illness is more prevalent among adult inmates in Minnesota county jails than nationally. All 78 Minnesota county jails were surveyed about their continuum-of-care procedures to help ensure that inmates who have mental illness continue to receive psychiatric medications after release. Of the 28 county jails responding to the survey (36%), most estimated that greater than 40% of their inmates receive medication for mental illness during incarceration. But while 89% of respondents reported that inmates are frequently taking medication(s) to treat mental illness at release, prerelease plann

Chart documentation of clinical preventive services at 9 Texas clinics.

Documentation of clinical preventive services at 9 Texas family practice residency programs, community health centers, and public health regional clinics was examined. Assessment of 11 risks, counseling on those risks, and timeliness of 8 screening tests and immunizations were abstracted. Documentation of clinicians' risk assessment focused on tobacco use (56.4%), alcohol/drug abuse (45.8%), and excess weight (21.6%). Counseling was documented most often for nutrition (20.5%), family planning (11.6%), and physical activity (10.3%). Of the sites studied, public health regional clinics had the h
