A 10-year-old boy with subacute sclerosing panencehalitis (SSPE) is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by typical clinical picture, electroencephalographic changes, post-mortem pathohistological study and high titer of measles antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Serum to cerebrospinal fluid ratio of measles antibody titers was 16. The determination of measles antibody titer in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid, by using complement fixation and hemagglutinin inhibition tests, should be done in all patients with SSPE.

A rapid enzyme immunoassay technique is described for the detection in human sera of antibodies of any class to pigeon antigens. The method is based on binding human antibodies in excess to polystyrene-fixed antigens from pigeon droppings or pigeon serum, followed by capture of the same antigens coupled to peroxidase. A very good correlation was found of titers obtained by means of this 60-min assay with traditional sandwich immunoassay and with precipitation- and complement - fixation tests.

The serum specimens of patients attending clinics and polyclinics of our hospital and suspected of having brucellosis were evaluated for B. abortus, B. canis and C. burnetti by Wright agglutination, 2ME. TAT (2 mercaptoethanol Tube Agglutination) and KBR (Complement Fixation reaction) tests. A total of 514 sera was examined gram 296 men and 218 women. We detected antibody to C. burnetti 156 (30,39%) of the sera and B. canis in 43 (8.3%) and to B. abortus in 32 (6.2%).

The study of antibody production in cotton rats infected with Rickettsia prowazekii B and TB has revealed that R. prowazekii antigens, inducing the production of antibodies determined in the complement fixation, indirect hemolysis, and passive hemagglutination tests, are T-independent. The study of the nonspecific reactivity of T-lymphocytes in cotton rats infected with R. prowazekii TB has indicated that in case of the prolonged persistence of the infective agent in the animals no secondary immune deficiency develops.

The first probable human case of pulmonary anisakiasis is reported. A 37-year-old Japanese person in California developed pleural effusion after consumption of raw salmon at a seafood restaurant in San Francisco. A marked eosinophilia was noted in the blood and pleural exudate. The patient was tested for helminthic infections by intradermal, complement fixation, Ouchterlony, and immunoelectrophoresis tests using antigens of various worm species. A specific precipitin band was recognized only with Anisakis (Type I larvae) antigen.

Complement fixation tests were performed on sera from 18 patients with achalasia and 12 age- and sex-matched controls against a number of bacterial and viral agents in an attempt to ascertain any association with previous infection or any evidence of an altered immune response. There was a statistically significant increase of antibody titre against measles virus in the sera of 21 patients with achalasia compared with age- and sex-matched controls and this was confirmed by haemagglutination inhibition.

Ovine sera collected from the northern Prefectures of Hokkaido, Iwate and Aomori in Japan, were examined for the presence of antibodies against Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) using the complement fixation test and, against Brucella spp., using both the rapid serum agglutination test and the complement fixation test. None of the sera tested were serologically positive to Brucella spp. A total of 21 animals (8.64%) out of 243 samples tested were seropositive to the C. burnetii antigen. Granulomatous inflammation was seen in liver biopsy specimens from five patients with Q fever. All patients had a fever of unknown origin with mild abnormalities of liver function. The granulomatous process in the liver was very distinctive, with fibrinoid ring formation seen in four of the five cases. A diagnosis of Q fever was suggested in the five cases on the basis of the characteristic granulomatous inflammation. Results of subsequent complement fixation tests were positive in all five patients.

Two hundred twenty-six specimens (160 serum samples, 66 cerebrospinal fluid samples) were tested with the Meridian Premier Coccidioides enzyme immunoassay (MPC-EIA), and the results were compared with those of conventional serologic tests detecting complement-fixing (CF) and tube precipitin (TP) antibodies. Seven llamas were immunized with killed Brucella abortus S1119.3 cells and bled sequentially, resulting in 64 samples. An eighth llama was kept as a negative control. In addition, 299 llama and 2075 alpaca sera, submitted for diagnostic testing, were included. Sera from all llamas were tested by the buffered antigen plate agglutination test, the complement fixation test, and the indirect enzyme immunoassays using smooth and rough lipopolysaccharides.
