Dent corn yield and grain protein responses to integrated composted sewage sludge and liquid centrate fertilization compared with chemical fertilizer.

Population growth and urbanization have increased wastewater generation, producing large volumes of sewage sludge requiring sustainable management. Anaerobic digestion and composting produce liquid centrate (LC) and composted sewage sludge (CSS), which can reduce dependence on synthetic fertilizers. However, their combined use as basal and topdressing nitrogen sources for dent corn has not been evaluated. This study assessed the potential of CSS as a basal fertilizer and LC as a topdressing to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizer (NPK) in dent corn cultivation. A field experiment included si

Biodegradation of 13C-Labeled and Nonlabeled Aliphatic-Aromatic Polyesters in Compost: Advancing Assessments through Combined Respirometry and Residual Polyester Analysis.

Standard polymer biodegradability tests in industrial compost rely on running incubations at high initial polymer concentrations and exclusively determining polymer mineralization to carbon dioxide, while not analyzing the nonmineralized fraction of polymer-added carbon. This work presents an approach that combines the use of 13C-labeled polyesters in compost incubations to selectively track both mineralized and nonmineralized polyester 13C at low initial polyester concentrations with analysis of residual polyester during the incubations by compost solvent extraction coupled to proton nuclear

Emission and reduction of non-CH4-trace gases in a compost-based biofilter receiving gas from a pig manure storage tank.

Manure gas consists of methane (CH4) and trace gases such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3), which contributes to global climate change and impacts local surroundings due to odour and eutrophication. A compost-based biofilter was established at a pig farm to reduce CH4 emissions from gas produced in a manure storage tank. This study evaluated the efficiency of the biofilter in reducing H2S and NH3 emissions. In addition, nitrous oxide (N2O) produced by the compost material was quantified, and its potential climate change impact was assessed. The average CH4 oxidation efficiency was

Contrasted tolerance of Agrostis capillaris metallicolous and non-metallicolous ecotypes in the context of a mining technosol amended by biochar, compost and iron sulfate.

Metal(loid) contamination of soil, resulting from the mining activities, is a major issue worldwide, due to its negative effects on the environment and health. Therefore, these contaminated soils need to be remediated. One realistic method is the assisted phytostabilization, which aims at establishing a vegetation cover on the soil that will reduce metal(loid) bioavailability and spreading through the prevention of wind erosion and water leaching. In addition, amendments are applied to improve soil conditions and ameliorate plant growth. In this goal, biochar and compost showed good results in

Dissipation and persistence of sulfonamides, quinolones and tetracyclines in anaerobically digested biosolids and compost during short-term storage under natural conditions.

This study investigated the dissipation and persistence of three groups of residual antibiotics (sulfonamides, quinolones, and tetracyclines) in anaerobically digested (AD) biosolids and compost during 28 days of storage under environmental conditions. Results showed that the total dissipation of sulfonamides was above 70%, which was higher than that of quinolones and tetracyclines. Quinolones were more persistent in compost than in AD biosolids. Similar dissipation rates in AD biosolids and compost were observed for tetracyclines. Of the four commonly used models, the availability-adjusted fi

Potential of novel iron 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate loaded on biochar to reduce ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions and its associated biological mechanism during composting.

In this study, a novel iron 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate loaded on biochar (BC-FeBTC) was developed and applied to kitchen waste composting. The results demonstrated that the emissions of NH3 and N2O were significantly reduced by 57.2% and 37.8%, respectively, compared with those in control group (CK). Microbiological analysis indicated that BC-FeBTC addition altered the diversity and abundance of community structure as well as key functional genes. The nitrification genes of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were enhanced, thereby promoting nitrification and reducing the emission of NH3. The typical

Effects of Bacillus-based inoculum on odor emissions co-regulation, nutrient element transformations and microbial community tropological structures during chicken manure and sawdust composting.

This study aims to evaluate whether different doses of Bacillus-based inoculum inoculated in chicken manure and sawdust composting will provide distinct effects on the co-regulation of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nutrient conversions and microbial topological structures. Results indicate that the Bacillus-based inoculum inhibits NH3 emissions mainly by regulating bacterial communities, while promotes H2S emissions by regulating both bacterial and fungal communities. The inoculum only has a little effect on total organic carbon (TOC) and inhibits total sulfur (TS) and total phosph

Enhancing humification enzymatic activity and antibiotic resistance gene attenuation in aerobic composting of sewage sludge and food waste: The role of calcium oxide amendment.

Organic municipal solid waste (OMSW) management remains a global challenge, intensifying with rapid urbanization and the widespread use of antibiotics for various purposes. These practices contribute to the dissemination of emerging contaminants, particularly antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Composting is widely applied for OMSW treatment, however the effectiveness of calcium oxide (CaO) amendment in mitigating ARGs and enhancing humification remains limited. This research investigated the effects of CaO amendment at varying levels (T1-0.25 %, T2-0.5 %, and T3-1 % w/w) on humification, enzy

Dose-dependent effects of manganese dioxide-modified biochar on lignocellulose degradation and humification in donkey manure composting: Insights into microenvironment-driven biotic-abiotic regulation.

The low degradation efficiency of lignocellulose during donkey manure composting restricts its humification. Manganese dioxide-modified biochar (MBC) can strengthen this process, whereas its dose effect remains unclear. This study investigated the effects and regulatory mechanisms of MBC levels (5% MBC1, 10% MBC2 and 15% MBC3) on lignocellulose degradation and humification during donkey manure composting. The results showed humus content followed the order: MBC1/MBC2 > CK > MBC3 (p<0.05), implying that an appropriate dosage of MBC promoted humification, while an excessively high dosage inhibit

Evaluation of Aquamicrobium lusatiense NLF 2-7 as a Biocontrol Agent in Manure Composting: Effects on Odorous Compounds and Microbial Community Under Mesophilic Conditions.

Microbial inoculation is a commonly applied approach in composting to enhance organic matter biodegradation and reduce odor emissions. However, the different characteristics of bacteria in terms of temperature can be considered to optimize their effect during different phases of composting. A mesophilic bacterium, namely Aquamicrobium lusatiense NLF 2-7, was evaluated to mitigate odor emissions and enhance the bacterial community under mesophilic composting. Two different treatments were designed: treatment 1 with a single inoculation on the initial day and treatment 2 with split inoculation a

Co-applying biochar and manganese ore can improve the formation and stability of humic acid during co-composting of sewage sludge and corn straw.

This study examined the effects of corn straw biochar (CSB) and manganese ore (MO) on the abiotic formation and stability of humic acid (HA) during sewage sludge composting. Co-applying CSB and MO (106%) induced a higher increase in HA content of final compost product than those of no or single applications (32.6-85.1%). This positive change was achieved by promoting the conversion of humus precursors and fulvic acid to HA through abiotic pathway, respectively, in the early and later stages of composting. The co-application of CSB and MO also exhibited a higher capacity to improve HA stability

Biochar-silkworm excrement co-compost alleviates Rehmannia glutinosa continuous cropping obstacles with coordinated soil, plant, and rhizosphere bacterial responses.

Continuous cropping obstacles (CCO) severely constrain the sustainable cultivation of Rehmannia glutinosa (R. glutinosa) by degrading soil quality and disturbing rhizosphere microbial communities. This study developed a rice-husk biochar-silkworm excrement co-composting system and evaluated the resulting compost in continuously cropped soil. Among six composting treatments, the compost containing 9% biochar (BSC3) showed the highest overall quality, reaching a peak temperature of 63.9 °C, a final cation exchange capacity of 39.4 cmol+ kg-1, a C/N ratio of 11.1, and a germination index above 80

Ecological safety threshold for mature high-oil food waste compost in coral sand: Microbial network indicators for reef island restoration.

Coral reef islands face escalating degradation due to extreme substrate infertility (coral sand) and waste management challenges in isolated marine environments. High-oil food waste composting offers a circular economy solution, yet uncontrolled application risks marine pollution through salt leaching into adjacent waters. This study establishes an evidence-based ecological safety threshold for mature high-oil food waste compost amendment in South China Sea coral sand. The compost achieved full maturity (germination index 157.5%, C/N 11.37, oil degradation rate 92.7%, residual oil 1.84%, NH4+/

Biocontrol of Agroathelia rolfsii associated with stem rot disease in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and growth promotion using compost-associated actinobacteria.

Stem rot disease (Agroathelia rolfsii) biocontrol is an environmentally safe alternative that could potentially decrease disease severity and limit plant and yield losses. In the present investigation, 11 actinomycetes isolates, recovered from disease-suppressive composts, were tested as whole cell suspensions and cell-free culture filtrates for their ability to suppress tomato stem rot and to stimulate plant growth. Five isolates (namely A5-3, A2-4, A3-4, A4-4 and A5-4), applied as cell suspensions, were found to be the most effective in suppressing disease severity by 37.5-56.2% compared to

Enhancing copper binding property of compost-derived humic substances by biochar amendment: Further insight from two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy.

Little is known about the environmental impacts of biochar (BC) amendment on the immobilization of heavy metals in compost-treated fields. In consequence, this study was designed to explore the effects of BC amendment on the copper (Cu) binding properties of compost-derived humic substances (HS). To this end, unamended and 4.7% (by wet weight) BC-amended compost were incubated in parallel with regular wetting for 6 months. The stability constants for Cu binding, calculated based on the fluorescence quenching technique, were higher for the compost-derived HS with versus without BC amendment. Th

Emission potential of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and ammonia from sludge compost with different bio-stability under various oxygen levels.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and ammonia from biowaste-derived residues is influenced by both the degree of bio-stability and atmosphere of oxygen level (i.e., either anaerobic, aerobic or anoxic conditions). By means of odor emission potential (OEP) test, present study directly examined how these two factors jointly affected the emissions of different odorous compounds from sludge compost. Results reveal that (1) the cumulative amount of ammonia and VSCs ranged from 0.08 to 0.38 mg/g-DM and 1.92 to 6.42 μg-S/g-DM, respectively. (2) High degree of bio-stability and oxygen level decreased t
