Mycoplasmas associated with bovine conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis.

In two separate herds of fattening calves a sudden-onset outbreak of ocular disease with profuse lacrimation occurred. The disease resembled the early stage of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis but after a few days the clinical signs of bronchopneumonia appeared. From conjunctival swabs Mycoplasma (M.) bovigenitalium, M. bovirhinis and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus were isolated. Moraxella bovis infection was not established. In one of the herds M. bovigenitalium was also found in the pneumonic lungs of dead calves. In one herd M. bovoculi was isolated from a cow with chro

The safety and efficacy of topical norfloxacin compared with chloramphenicol for the treatment of external ocular bacterial infections. The Norfloxacin-Chloramphenicol Ophthalmic Study Group.

Two hundred and forty-six patients with signs of acute bacterial conjunctivitis and/or blepharitis were randomised to receive either norfloxacin or chloramphenicol for one week in this double-masked parallel group study. Ninety-two per cent of the norfloxacin-treated patients and 93% of the chloramphenicol-treated patients were rated as either clinically improved or cured at the end of the treatment period. Based upon pre-treatment bacteriological cultures, 31.3% of the patients had significant bacterial infection of the lids and/or conjunctiva. All of these culture-positive patients were rate

Insertional mutagenesis in the zoonotic pathogen Chlamydia caviae.

The ability to introduce targeted genetic modifications in microbial genomes has revolutionized our ability to study the role and mode of action of individual bacterial virulence factors. Although the fastidious lifestyle of obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens poses a technical challenge to such manipulations, the last decade has produced significant advances in our ability to conduct molecular genetic analysis in Chlamydia trachomatis, a major bacterial agent of infertility and blindness. Similar approaches have not been established for the closely related veterinary Chlamydia spp., wh

Impact of antibiotic resistance in the management of ocular infections: the role of current and future antibiotics.

PURPOSE: This article reviews the effects of the increase in bacterial resistance on the treatment of ocular infections. DESIGN: Interpretive assessment. METHODS: Literature review and interpretation. RESULTS: Ocular bacterial infections include conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, blepharitis, orbital cellulitis, and dacryocystitis. Treatment for most ocular bacterial infections is primarily empiric with broad-spectrum antibiotics, which are effective against the most common bacteria associated with these ocular infections. However, the widespread use of broad-spectrum systemic anti

Eculizumab-Associated Moraxella lacunata Bacteremia and Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome in a Toddler with Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.

Moraxella lacunata, a low-virulence Gram-negative coccobacillus, is classically associated with conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract infections; systemic infections such as sepsis have rarely been reported, especially in children. We describe a 28-month-old girl with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and stage II chronic kidney disease on long-term eculizumab therapy who presented with systemic inflammatory response syndrome and was found to have Moraxella lacunata bloodstream infection. Eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal anti-C5 antibody, has been associated with susceptibility to infe

Quinolone immediate hypersensitivity due to topical ophthalmic preparations: a case report and review of literature.

Ophthalmic quinolone preparations are widely used for the treatment of eye diseases; however, there are only a few reported cases of immediate hypersensitivity due to such medications. Here, we present a case of immediate hypersensitivity induced by an ophthalmic administration of quinolones in a 20-year-old female with bacterial conjunctivitis. The results of skin prick and basophil activation tests suggest that it involved a type Ib reaction associated with Mas-related G-protein coupled receptor X2. The present case cautions us to be aware of quinolone immediate hypersensitivity caused by to

Review of external ocular disease associated with aids and HIV infection.

External ocular disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can often be overlooked by the eye care practitioner. Different types of external ocular disease can be an indication of the patient's overall immune status as well as the stage of HIV infection. The external ocular sequelae of HIV infection can be of visual consequence for the patient. Eye care practitioners need to become familiar with these conditions. The diagnosis and management of the following ocular conditions associated with HIV infection are reviewed: conjunctival microvascular disease, dry eye, alle

Causes of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in Karachi, Pakistan.

The causes of conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis in 388 patients who attended eye casualty departments in Karachi, Pakistan, during a 5 month period were investigated. Most of these infections were diagnosed as adenovirus (291, 75%) or bacterial (71, 18.3%). Of the remainder, 9 cases (2.3%) were caused by herpes simplex virus and 7 (1.8%) by Chalmydia trachomatis. There was no evidence of typical active trachoma in this urban population. Bacteria or Candida albicans were also grown from 44 of the adenovirus cases (15%). Many of the bacteria grown from eyes in this study were resistant to

[Chronic conjunctivitis as an extragenital focus of genitourinary chlamydial infection].

Chlamydial conjunctivitis accounts for 3 to 30% cases of conjunctivitis of various etiologies. In such patients, latent clinical manifestations do not correspond to morphological changes in the infected organs and tissues. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive examination of a patient with chronic chlamydial conjunctivitis in the setting of a disseminated form of chlamydial infection (DCI). Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used for diagnostics. In addition, conjunctival biopsy specimens were obtained for immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. C

Bilateral corneal perforation in a sexually active adult male with gonococcal conjunctivitis.

A 41 year-old Malay man had been treated by general practitioners for bilateral red eyes with profuse discharge of three weeks' duration with no improvement. He then presented to an ophthalmologist who noted profuse purulent discharge, bilateral corneal perforation, lid swelling and chemosis. Culture of the ocular discharge grew Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Treatment with systemic and topical antibiotics prevented microperforations in the right eye from progressing to overt perforation and was able to control disease in the left eye.

The Effect of Ophthalmic Antibiotics on Clinical Outcomes and Transmissibility of Conjunctivitis Associated with Haemophilus influenzae versus Other Pathogens: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Transmission rates among children with conjunctivitis were low and antibiotic use was not associated with reduced transmission. Policies recommending exclusion from daycare and school for conjunctivitis should be scrutinized as they may not reduce transmission and may increase unnecessary antibiotic use.

Predictive value of CD19 measurements for bacterial infections in children infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

We investigated the predictive value of CD19 cell percentages (CD19%) for times to bacterial infections, using data from six pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group protocols and adjusting for other potentially prognostic variables, such as CD4%, CD8%, immunoglobulin (IgA) level, lymphocyte count, prior infections, prior zidovudine treatment, and age. In addition, we explored the combined effects of CD19% and IgG level in predicting time to infection. We found that a low CD19% is associated with a nonsignificant 1.2-fold increase in hazard of bacterial infection (95% confidence interval: 0.97, 1.

Predictors of Chlamydia trachomatis conjunctivitis in neonates: a 10-Year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmia neonatorum (ON) is a common neonatal ocular condition with potentially serious ocular and systemic complications. The spectrum of causative organisms varies by geographical regions, maternal health practices, and over time. Chlamydia trachomatis remains a significant pathogen with non-specific symptoms that overlap with other infections. This study aims to assess local burden of Chlamydia trachomatis and identify clinical predictors. METHODS: We conducted a 10-year retrospective review (2014-2023) of neonates presenting with suspected ON at a tertiary paediatric eye cen
