The effectiveness of a Housing First adaptation for ethnic minority groups: findings of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effectiveness of Housing First (HF) among ethnic minority groups, despite its growing popularity for homeless adults experiencing mental illness. This randomized controlled trial tests the effectiveness of a HF program using rent supplements and intensive case management, enhanced by anti-racism and anti-oppression practices for homeless adults with mental illness from diverse ethnic minority backgrounds. METHODS: This unblinded pragmatic field trial was carried out in community settings in Toronto, Canada. Participants were 237 adults from ethnic minorit

Group behavioral activation for patients with severe obesity and binge eating disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

The aim of the present study was to assess whether behavioral activation (BA) is an efficacious treatment for decreasing eating disorder symptoms in patients with obesity and binge eating disorder (BED). Ninety-six patients with severe obesity and BED were randomized to either 10 sessions of group BA or wait-list control. The study was conducted at an obesity clinic in a regular hospital setting. The treatment improved some aspects of disordered eating and had a positive effect on depressive symptoms but there was no significant difference between the groups regarding binge eating and most oth

[Whooping cough in Spain. Current epidemiology, prevention and control strategies. Recommendations by the Pertussis Working Group].

A large increase of pertussis incidence has been observed in recent years in countries with high vaccination coverage. Outbreaks of pertussis are increasingly being reported. The age presentation has a bipolar distribution: infants younger 6months that have not initiated or completed a vaccination schedule, and adolescents and adults, due to the lost of natural or vaccine immunity over time. These epidemiological changes justify the need to adopt new vaccination strategies in order to protect young infants and to reduce pertussis incidence in all age groups. Adolescents and adults immunization

Short term modulation of trunk neuromuscular responses following spinal manipulation: a control group study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most frequent musculoskeletal conditions in industrialized countries and its economic impact is important. Spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) is believed to be a valid approach in the treatment of both acute and chronic LBP. It has also been shown that SMT can modulate the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the paraspinal muscle. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in a group of patients with low back pain, the persistence of changes observed in trunk neuromuscular responses after a spinal manipulation (SMT). METHODS: Sixty adult partici

Effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral group intervention for knee osteoarthritis pain: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, with pain being its most common symptom. Little is known about the psychological aspects of knee osteoarthritis pain. There is an emerging consensus among osteoarthritis specialists about the importance of addressing not only biological but also psychosocial factors in the assessment and treatment of osteoarthritis. As few studies have evaluated the effect of psychological interventions on knee osteoarthritis pain, good quality randomized controlled trials are needed to determine their effectiveness. METHODS/DESIGN: We inte

Absence of PCR-detectable human papilloma virus in erythroplasia of Queyrat using a comparative control group.

OBJECTIVES: High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been linked with genital carcinomas. However, the exact relation between HPV and erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ), for example, in-situ carcinoma of the glans and prepuce, is still unclear. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of lesional HPV-DNA in patients with EQ. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded biopsies were obtained from the glans or inner foreskin of 11 adult uncircumcised patients (mean age 67.7 years; range 57-79) with EQ. An equal number of randomly selected uncircumcised healthy control patients underwent a single brush

Endometrial integrin expression in women undergoing IVF and ICSI: a comparison of the two groups and fertile controls.

BACKGROUND: Integrins are thought to play a vital role in implantation. Three integrins in particular (alpha(4)beta(1), alpha(v)beta(3) and alpha(1)beta(1)) are all present during the implantation window. Defects in their expression have been linked to tubal disease, unexplained infertility and endometriosis. Hence, a reduced endometrial integrin expression would be expected in women attending for IVF due to these causes of infertility when compared with those with male factor infertility attending for ICSI. METHODS: Women attending for IVF (n = 25) and ICSI (n = 25) treatment were recruited,

Antioxidant intake and adult-onset wheeze: a case-control study. Aberdeen WHEASE Study Group.

An increase in prevalence of wheezing illness in the UK has coincided with a reduction in the consumption of natural antioxidants, which may modulate the lung's response to oxidant stress, limiting the expression of airway inflammation and respiratory symptoms. The hypothesis that intakes and plasma levels of natural antioxidants would be determinants of adult-onset wheezing illness was tested. A nested case-control study was conducted in 94 cases with adult-onset wheeze and 203 controls aged 39-45 yrs identified in a 30-yr follow-up survey. Antioxidant intake was measured by a food frequency
