Impact of Convulsive Maternal Seizures on Fetus Dynamics.

The study findings demonstrate that the amniotic fluid plays an important role in protecting the fetus during convulsive maternal seizures. The amniotic fluid was found to be an effective buffer, significantly reducing the transfer of kinetic energy to the fetus during these events. This highlights the sufficient protection provided by the amniotic fluid in such circumstances. The research was conducted using a model that simulates the complex interactions between a pregnant woman's anatomy, the uterus, and the fetus immersed in amniotic fluid. Key parameters such as speed, acceleration, and E

Cerebral tuberculoma and convulsion in infants: A case report.

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system is the second most common site after tuberculous meningitis. It represents 0.2% of intracranial expansive lesions in some Western countries compared to 10%-30% in developing countries. We report the case of an infant of 1 year and 2 months old who presented for 15 days with convulsions with asthenia, hypotonia, without fever. The clinical examination and laboratory workup were without abnormalities. His father had ongoing pulmonary tuberculosis, but the infant had no clinical or radiological signs of pulmonary tuberculosis. A brain MRI was showed mult

Effects of probiotics on pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsions in mice.

OBJECTIVE: There are some reports of the effect of the gut microbiota on the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of probiotics on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced convulsions in mice. METHODS: The mice were pretreated with probiotic powder (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Bifidobacterium bifidum) suspended in normal saline by intragastric gavage (IG-gavage) for 14 (group 1) or 28 (group 2) days prior to injection of PTZ (90 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). Diazepam (DZP, 1 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) was used as the reference drug. The latency a

Encephalopathy mimicking non-convulsive status Epilepticus.

Primary hyperammonemic encephalopathy due to urea cycle disorders (UCD) typically manifests with episodic unresponsiveness and this clinical entity is not often included in the differential diagnosis of presumed non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). However, this diagnostic consideration has therapeutic implications. In this report, we document the therapeutic importance of elucidating the specific cause of hyperammonemic encephalopathy that closely mimicked NCSE through 2 unique illustrative cases.

Can syncope cause convulsive seizures in adults?

PURPOSE: Convulsive epileptic seizures triggered by transient cerebral hypoperfusion 'reflex anoxic seizures' are well-described in children but are not commonly recognized in adults. METHODS: We report a case series of 12 adults who presented acutely after generalized tonic-clonic seizures with a clear syncopal phase before the convulsion. We describe the aetiology, semiology and natural history of these events. RESULTS: Four patients (33.3%) had relevant risk factors for development of seizures/active epilepsy. Five patients (41.7%) had recurrent events prior to initial review by an epilep

Prevalence of recent immunisation in children with febrile convulsions.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of recent immunisation amongst children under 7 years of age presenting for febrile convulsions. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of all children under the age of seven presenting with febrile convulsions to a tertiary referral hospital in Sydney. A total of 78 cases occurred in the period January 2011 to July 2012 and were included in the study. Data was extracted from medical records to provide a retrospective review of the convulsions. RESULTS: Of the 78 total cases, there were five medical records which contained information on whether or not immuni

Etiology and prognosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus.

Although non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is an important type of epilepsy, it is not often recognized. In order to analyze the clinical characteristics and outcome in patients with NCSE, we examined the medical records of patients with NCSE admitted to the Seoul National University Hospital between June 2005 and October 2008. The clinical details and electroencephalography records of 34 adult NCSE patients (aged over 16 years) were collected. Their mean age was 47 years (standard deviation 20 years, range, 16-87 years), and 20 were female. Twenty-seven patients (79.4%) showed decrease

Relationship between anaemia and simple febrile convulsions.

BACKGROUND: Simple febrile seizures are the commonest convulsions occuring in children and its exact pathophysiology is unknown. Among other postulated reasons anaemia has been thought to be a possible aetiology. This study was conducted to find out any relationship between anaemia and simple febrile convulsions. METHODS: We studied notes of 1,951 patients retrospectively who were admitted in the Women & Children Hospital Abbottabad from Jan 2013 to Aug 2013. Thirty-one patients with febrile seizures were included in the study as group I and another 31 patients matched for the demographic dat

[Familial congenital hypomagnesemia revealed by neonatal convulsions].

Congenital hypomagnesemia is a rare disease, with an impact on cognitive and neurological development. We report on three familial cases of congenital hypomagnesemia, two boys and one girl who belong to the same consanguineous family. They all presented neonatal seizures and a psychomotor developmental delay. Cerebral computed tomography showed cerebral atrophy and calcifications in one case and magnetic resonance imaging found predominant cerebellar atrophy in the two other cases. All three patients also had hypocalcemia, hyperphosphoremia, and hypomagnesemia. The parathyroid hormone blood le

Evaluation of etiologic and prognostic factors in neonatal convulsions.

This study evaluated etiologic and risk factors affecting long-term prognoses of neurologic outcomes in newborns with neonatal seizures. We enrolled patients at chronologic ages of 23-44 months, referred to the Department of Pediatric Neurology, Istanbul Medical Faculty, from January 1, 2007-December 31, 2009, after manifesting seizures in their first postnatal 28 days. Of 112 newborns, 41 were female, 71 were male, 33 were preterm, and 79 were full-term. Perinatal asphyxia (28.6%) and intracranial hemorrhage (17%) were the most common causes of neonatal seizures. Cerebral palsy developed in 2

Chronic in vitro ketosis is neuroprotective but not anti-convulsant.

The ketogenic diet (KD), used successfully to treat a variety of epilepsy syndromes in humans and to attenuate seizures in different animal models, also provides powerful neuroprotection in various CNS injury models. Yet, a direct role for ketone bodies in limiting seizure and neuronal damage remains poorly understood. Using organotypic hippocampal slice cultures, we established an in vitro model of chronic ketosis for parallel studies of its neuroprotective and anti-convulsant effects. Chronic in vitro treatment with a ketone body, D-beta-hydroxybutyrate, protected the cultures against chroni

[Management of convulsive status epilepticus in infants and children].

Convulsive status epilepticus in childhood is a life threatening condition with serious risk of neurological sequelae which constitutes a medical emergency. Clinical and experimental data suggest that prolonged seizures can have immediate and long-term adverse consequences on the immature and developing brain. So the child who presents with a continuous generalized convulsive seizure lasting greater than five minutes should be promptly treated. The outcome is mainly determined by the underlying etiology, age and duration of status epilepticus. In children the mortality from status epilepticus

Lidocaine treatment in pediatric convulsive status epilepticus.

BACKGROUND: Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) may end fatally or leave serious sequelae. CSE treatment, invariably an emergency case, is based upon i.v. benzodiazepines as well as phenytoin, barbiturates or both. The present paper reports efficiency of lidocaine in CSE. METHODS: The effects of lidocaine on patients with CSE due to infectious and non-infectious reasons were compared. Lidocaine was given in 29 episodes of CSE to 49 patients having failed to respond to first-line anticonvulsive drugs, such as diazepam, phenobarbital and phenytoin therapy. Lidocaine was given in doses of 2 mg/k

A case of shigellosis with intractable septic shock and convulsions.

Although shigellosis is a potentially fatal disease that may cause a number of extra-intestinal manifestations, intractable septic shock is an unusual complication. Here we describe a 6-month-old infant who developed severe septic shock and convulsions during an episode of dysentery caused by multidrug-resistant Shigella dysenteriae. The case presentation demonstrates how shigellosis can lead to rare and potentially misleading complications such as septic shock when not treated adequately and promptly.

Ictal EEG in patients with convulsions with mild gastroenteritis.

The aim of this study is to reveal detailed clinical manifestations and an evolution of ictal EEG discharges of convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG). We recorded ictal EEGs of six patients with CwG. Clinical manifestations included loss of responsiveness, motion arrest, cyanosis, lateral eye deviation, and hemifacial convulsion. Automatism was not observed in any patients. A generalized tonic-clonic convulsion was observed in five of six patients. Ictal EEGs demonstrated that all seizures were of focal onset that evolved into a secondarily generalized seizure. The region of the onset of
