Agenesis of the corpus callosum: clinical, neuroradiological and cytogenetic studies.

This study examined 35 patients with developmental disabilities who were referred for diagnostic evaluation that later revealed agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) by computerized tomography (CT). Sixteen had partial ACC, six had complete ACC, and one had a hypoplastic corpus callosum. In the other twelve cases, ACC existed, but the degree of callosal defect was not specified. Other intracranial defects were frequently present. Clinically, 15 patients (43%) had a history of seizures, 28 (82%) were mentally retarded or developmentally delayed and an additional five patients (15%) possessed bo…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum. Clinical features in 40 children.

Forty children with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum have been prospectively identified and followed up for up to 15 years. Additional physical anomalies and diagnoses were frequent. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of children were developmentally delayed or retarded. If callosal agenesis was diagnosed during infancy, most children had or subsequently developed seizures. Older patients had a more favorable outcome and were less likely to develop epilepsy.

Choroid plexus lipomas associated with lipoma of the corpus callosum.

Lateral ventricular choroid plexus lipomas are frequently associated with lipomas of the corpus callosum. Choroid plexus lipomas may be continuous with the midline lesion or discrete, and they may be bilaterally symmetrical of asymmetrical. The case of a 9-month-old infant is presented as an example.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: a study of the frequency of associated malformations.

Review of 11 cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum studied at our institution revealed a high incidence of associated anomalies. None patients had associated malformations of the central nervous system, 6 involving the pyramidal system. Eight cases were associated with malformations in the rest of the body. Review of completely examined cases from the literature yielded 47 examples of associated malformations. These were varied and without consistent pattern, with the possible exception of facial abnormalities.

Arteriovenous malformations of the splenium of the corpus callosum: microsurgical treatment.

Ten patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) involving the splenium of the corpus callosum are presented. All were treated by microsurgical techniques with no mortality and minimal morbidity. The diagnosis and operative technique is described, and these AVMs are compared with those involving the anterior and the middle portions of the corpus callosum.
