An 18-year-old woman presented to our institution with fever, bilateral flank pain, headache and photophobia. She had a previous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure device inserted at the age of 9 years. Blood cultures on admission were positive for Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) revealed an echodensity associated with the ASD closure device, most consistent with a vegetation. CASE: A 4-year-old boy presented with a history of swelling and pain in his ankle for 1 month. X-ray showed a periosteal reaction, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) favored radiodense signs in a T2-weighted image. An open biopsy was performed, and cultures grew Corynebacterium spp. Further research showed that the pathogen was Corynebacterium striatum subtype. Vancomycin and cefazolin were given for 6 weeks. Clinical, X-ray, and MRI signs indicated improvement, and there were no complications with 2-year follow-up.

"Pigeon fever" has recently been diagnosed in new geographic regions in North America and should be kept as a differential diagnosis by practitioners when an external or internal abscess is identified in a horse.

A transcriptional profile of the H2O2-adapted Corynebacterium glutamicum HA strain reveals a list of upregulated regulatory genes. Among them, we selected ORF NCgl2298, designated osrR and analyzed its role in H2O2 adaptation. The osrR-deleted (ΔosrR) mutant had defective growth in minimal medium, which was even more pronounced in an osrR deletion mutant of an HA strain. The use of polymerase chain reaction (UP-PCR with universal primers for the genetic typing of 85 C. diphtheriae strains, isolated from patients and carriers at the period of the epidemic, has shown that a single natural clone of biovar gravis seems to prevail in North Western Russia. UP-PCR is an effective too for the rapid intraspecific typing of strains on the molecular-genetic level and for the study of the circulation of C.diphtheriae epidemic clones.

620 Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains from 472 sick and healthy persons were studied for their adhesive activity (AA) in direct agglutination of trypsin-treated sheep erythrocytes. Toxigenic strains had more active AA than non-toxigenic ones which was not dependent on the presence of toxin in the culture. Neither biotype nor serotype of the strains correlated with their AA. Sequential histological and fine structural changes were studied in liver from 4.5 min to 21 days after a single intravenous injection of Corynebacterium parvum in the rat. Yearling calves were pre-treated intravenously (IV) with a 0.20 mg kg-1 dose of Corynebacterium parvum and challenged after 30 days by IV inoculation of 3 X 10(9) Babesia bigemina. The relatively low 0.20 mg kg-1 dose of C. parvum enhanced resistance as indicated by lower mean Babesia parasitemias and less severe decreases in packed-cell volumes than in non-treated calves, but failed to stimulate a significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) level of protection against B. bigemina challenge.
