Trichogramma pretiosum is one of the main egg parasitoids used in the control of lepidopteran pests in Brazil. This natural enemy can be negatively affected by the use of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The present work used a systematic review and meta-analysis to group information from multiple studies on the selectivity of pesticides (279 commercial products) in rice, corn, soybean, apple and peach crops for immature stages (egg-larva, pre-pupa, and pupa) and adult parasitoids. The selected studies used the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control (IOBC) me

While enhancing crop yield remains a critical breeding objective, such efforts often compromise nutritional quality and stress tolerance. The growing global population and increasing environmental stresses make combining stable crop yields with improved nutritional quality a vital objective for sustainable food security. Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), the active form of vitamin B1, regulates core metabolism to support both human health and plant stress tolerances. Here, we show that editing the rice TPP riboswitch elevates multiple micronutrients, simultaneously increasing grain yield, cold tol

While previous reviews have largely focused on individual crops or single target-site mechanisms, the full-chain comparative landscape across major cereal crops remains unexplored. Here, we fill this critical gap by providing the first systematic, cross-crop comparative review that spans herbicide targets, resistance mechanisms, and breeding applications across four major cereals-rice, maize, wheat, and sorghum. Weed infestation is a serious constraint on crop production. Chemical weed control faces challenges such as herbicide resistance evolution and ecological risks. Developing herbicide-re…

A protocol for characterizing patterns of rice cropping practices and injuries due to pathogens, insects, and weeds was developed and used in six sites in tropical Asia covering a wide range of environments where lowland rice is cultivated. The data collected in a total population of 456 individual farmers' fields were combined to site-specific weather data and analyzed using non-parametric multivariate techniques: cluster analyses with chi-square distance and correspondence analyses. The main results are: (i) patterns of cropping practices that are common across sites can be identified; (ii)

Sandy soils are characterized by low organic matter content, weak nutrient retention, and limited water-holding capacity, which restrict crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of biochar, Azolla pinnata, and eggshell powder on soil properties and the productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in sandy soil. Field experiments were conducted during two consecutive growing seasons (2021-2022) at the Ismailia Agricultural Research Station, Egypt, using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and thre

Maize is a staple crop in sub-Saharan Africa, but yields remain sub-optimal. Improved breeding and seed systems are vital to increase productivity. We describe a hybrid seed production technology that will benefit seed companies and farmers. This technology improves efficiency and integrity of seed production by removing the need for detasseling. The resulting hybrids segregate 1:1 for pollen production, conserving resources for grain production and conferring a 200 kg ha-1 benefit across a range of yield levels. This represents a 10% increase for farmers operating at national average yield le

Plant diseases caused by bacterial, fungal, oomycete, and viral pathogens remain a major constraint to crop productivity worldwide. Recent advances in genome-editing technologies have enabled precise manipulation of genes involved in plant-pathogen interactions, providing new opportunities for developing disease-resistant crops. In particular, CRISPR/Cas-based systems have facilitated functional dissection and engineering of susceptibility genes, resistance genes, and immune regulatory networks across diverse crop species. In this review, we initially discuss emerging genome-engineering platfo

Developing climate-resilient crops is critical for future food security and sustainable agriculture under current climate scenarios. Of specific importance are drought and soil salinity. Tolerance traits to these stresses are highly complex, and the progress in improving crop tolerance is too slow to cope with the growing demand in food production unless a major paradigm shift in crop breeding occurs. In this work, we combined bioinformatics and physiological approaches to compare some of the key traits that may differentiate between xerophytes (naturally drought-tolerant plants) and mesophyte

Demand for organic foods is partially driven by consumers' perceptions that they are more nutritious. However, scientific opinion is divided on whether there are significant nutritional differences between organic and non-organic foods, and two recent reviews have concluded that there are no differences. In the present study, we carried out meta-analyses based on 343 peer-reviewed publications that indicate statistically significant and meaningful differences in composition between organic and non-organic crops/crop-based foods. Most importantly, the concentrations of a range of antioxidants s

The current study aimed to identify the survival of bio-control bacteria with antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum and assess their growth promoting activity in wheat crop field conditions. To evaluate the fungicidal activities of isolated bacteria using the dual culture method, both qualitative and quantitative bioassays were performed. Plant Growth Promoting activities such as Indole 3-Acetic Acid (IAA), phosphate solubilization, Hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and Siderophore production were assessed for three biocontrol bacterial isolates (BCB 07, BCB16, and BCB 83) out of 180 with 70% a

Across agricultural systems, crop production relies heavily on insect-mediated pollination. Both honey bees and bumble bees contribute substantially to crop productivity, with honey bee colonies providing large foraging workforces. On the other hand, bumble bees' specialized pollination behaviors offset the limitations of honey bees, making them especially well-suited for greenhouse production. However, pesticides may pose significant risks to bumble bee health. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the effects of treatment with cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the gut …

BACKGROUND: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a globally significant perennial leguminous forage crop, is widely cultivated in Inner Mongolia. Problematic weeds present a significant challenge to alfalfa production during the seedling stage, especially redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.). However, limited information is available on pre-emergence herbicides effective against both redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters in alfalfa fields during the establishment phase in Inner Mongolia.
RESULTS: We examined the effects of 12 pre-emergence he

The increasing fungicide resistance in pathogenic fungi presents a serious challenge to global agricultural production and food security. Phytopathogens like Penicillium italicum and Colletotrichum musae are great threats to economically important crop production. Citrus, a globally important fruit crop, is highly susceptible to post-harvest infections by P. italicum, while the huge post-harvest losses of bananas (Musa spp.) suffer from anthracnose caused by C. musae. In this study, aspergopyranoid A (1), a new γ-pyrone-ergosterol hybrid with a 6/6/6/6/5/6 hexacyclic skeleton, was isolated and…

Chromium (Cr) stress significantly hinders crop production by disrupting nutrient uptake, impairing plant growth, and contaminating soil, posing a substantial threat to agricultural sustainability. The use of deashed biochar (DAB) and strigolactone can be an effective solution to mitigate this issue. Deashed biochar enhances crop production by improving soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability while mitigating the bioavailability of toxic substances. Strigolactone boosts plant growth by stimulating root growth, branching, shoot formation, and overall plant physiology. Neverth…

An increase in ambient temperature throughout the twenty-first century has been described as a "worldwide threat" for crop production. Due to their sessile lifestyles, plants have evolved highly sophisticated and complex heat stress response (HSR) mechanisms to respond to higher temperatures. The HSR allows plants to minimize the damages caused by heat stress (HS), thus enabling cellular protection. HSR is crucial for their lifecycle and yield, particularly for plants grown in the field. At the cellular level, HSR involves the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and other stress-responsiv…

Intensive nitrogen (N) fertilization enhances crop yield but also increases ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (CO2, CH4 and N2O), requiring sustainable fertilization regimes. The co-application of organic and inorganic fertilizers can decrease the use of inorganic fertilizer, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance soil fertility. A simultaneous investigation of the effects of combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers on NH3 volatilization, GHG emissions, and soil fertility is, however, lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the co-ap

Global climate change is increasing the impacts of abiotic stresses on plants. Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and a variety of phytochemicals, and thus, are of great significance to human health. The growth of vegetable crops is regulated by a variety of abiotic stress factors, which not only affect their normal growth and metabolism but also lead to reduced yield and quality. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can modulate the morphological or physiological characteristics of plants via nitrogen fixation, phosphorus dissolution, potassium dissolution, produ
