Lower Circulating Leptin Levels Are Related to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Children With Obesity.

BACKGROUND: While for individuals with obesity an association between hyperleptinemia and an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is assumed, a leptin deficiency is also related to the development of NAFLD early in life in ob/ob mice, in patients with leptin deficiency due to biallelic likely pathogenic variants in the leptin gene, and in patients with lipodystrophy. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of circulating leptin levels in pre-pubertal children with obesity and steatosis hepatis. METHODS: The cross-sectional study consisted data of n=97 (nmale=76) pre

Circulating prolactin levels and the effect of dopaminergic agonists in systemic lupus erythematosus: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review of clinical studies investigated whether circulating PRL levels differed between subjects with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and healthy controls, the correlation between circulating PRL and SLE activity, and the effect of dopaminergic agonists as adjuvant therapy for SLE. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar for case-control and cross-sectional studies investigating circulating PRL levels in subjects with SLE and/or its correlation with disease activity, and clinical trials examining the effect of dopaminergic agonists on

A Description of the Hemolytic Component in Sickle Leg Ulcer: The Role of Circulating miR-199a-5p, miR-144, and miR-126.

Sickle leg ulcers (SLU) are malleoli lesions with exuberant hemolytic pathophysiology. The microRNAs are potential genetic biomarkers for several pathologies. Thereby, we aimed to assess the expression of circulating miR-199a-5p, miR-144, and miR-126 in association with hemolytic biomarkers in SLU. This cross-sectional study included 69 patients with sickle cell disease, 52 patients without SLU (SLU-) and 17 patients with active SLU or previous history (SLU+). The results demonstrated elevated expression of circulating miR-199a-5p and miR-144 in SLU+ patients while miR-126 expression was reduc

Association of circulating miR-20a, miR-27a, and miR-126 with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in general population.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes mellitus. Recently, circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been proposed as useful disease biomarkers. We examined whether circulating miRNAs, such as miR-20a, miR-27a, and miR-126, were useful biomarkers for NAFLD. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 527 subjects aged 39 years or older who had undergone a health examination in the Yakumo Study. Of the residents, 92 were diagnosed with NAFLD using a registered medical sonographer. Serum miR-20a, miR-27a and miR-126 levels

Poor patient outcome correlates with active engulfment of cytokeratin positive CTCs within cancer-associated monocyte population in lung cancer.

High rates of mortality in non-small cell lung cancer lung cancer is due to inherent and acquired resistance to systemic therapies and subsequent metastatic burden. Metastasis is supported by suppression of the immune system at secondary organs and within the circulation. Modulation of the immune system is now being exploited as a therapeutic target with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The tracking of therapeutic efficacy in a real-time can be achieved with liquid biopsy, and evaluation of circulating tumour cells and the associated immune cells. A stable liquid biopsy biomarker for non-small ce

Oral sericin ameliorates type 2 diabetes through passive intestinal and bypass transport into the systemic circulation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Boiled silkworm cocoons have been used to treat 'Xiaoke disease' (diabetes mellitus) recorded in Chinese medicine for over 800 years. In recent years, it has been found that the active substance silk sericin (SS) has therapeutic benefits in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). SS promotes pancreatic islet signalling, the proliferation of pancreatic islet cells, and insulin secretion. It is inferred that SS enters the bloodstream after oral administration and plays a role in the body's circulation. As a natural protein, SS needs to resist digestion by protea

An mRNA vaccine candidate encoding H5HA clade 2.3.4.4b protects mice from clade 2.3.2.1a virus infection.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 viruses from different clades have been circulating globally, threatening wild/domestic birds and mammals. Given frequent spillovers and high mortality among mammals, coupled with our inability to predict which clade of H5 virus has pandemic potential, cross-clade protective HPAI H5 vaccines are urgently needed. Here, we demonstrate the applicability of a lipid nanoparticle-based mRNA vaccine modality to induce cross-protective immunity against lethal HPAI virus infection.

Antigenic cross-reactivity between Zika and dengue viruses: is it time to develop a universal vaccine?

Zika and the four serotypes of dengue are closely related flaviviruses that share a high degree of structural and sequence homology and co-circulate in many regions of the world. Here, we review recent studies investigating antigenic cross-reactivity between the two viruses. We discuss the pathogenic and protective roles of cross-reactive anti-viral antibody and T cell responses, respectively, in modulating the outcome of secondary dengue or Zika infection. Based on recent findings and increased incidence of severe disease in seronegative recipients of the first dengue vaccine to be licensed,

Trauma center vs. nearest non-trauma center: direct transport or bypass approach for out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA), a sudden loss of heart function caused by severe trauma such as blunt, penetrating, or other injuries, presents significant public health challenges due to its high severity and extremely low survival rates. Approximately 2.7% of trauma patients experience cardiac arrest at the scene, with an overall survival rate of less than 5%. The correlations of prognosis with various transport approach, such as hospital level with different distance, are yet to be clarified. Thus, we conducted this study to assess the association of transporting

Circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 and physical performance in middle-aged and older adults with normal kidney function.

The circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a potential therapeutic target for cardiorenal syndrome. However, current evidence on the determinants, particularly the modifiable factors of circulating FGF23 levels that increase independently of the kidney function, remains limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between physical performance measures and circulating FGF23 levels in middle-aged and older adults with normal kidney function. This cross-sectional study assessed circulating FGF23 levels and physical performance parameters, including the handgrip stre
