A Cross-Sectional Study of Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections in a Tertiary Care Hospital in India.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) are commonly seen in critically ill patients with indwelling central venous catheters. To address CRBSI, one must know the causative microorganisms and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. This study aimed to identify the microbes that cause CRBSI and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, India, between March 2022 and February 2023. Adult patients in the ICU with a central line and suspecte

Prevalence and Predictors of Tuberculosis Infection in Children and Adolescents in Rural Uganda: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Much of the latent tuberculosis (TB) reservoir is established in childhood and adolescence. Yet, age-specific data on prevalence and predictors of infection in this population are sparse and needed to guide prevention and case finding. METHODS: From December 2021 to June 2023, we measured TB infection in children 1-17 years in 25 villages in rural Southwestern Uganda. We defined TB infection as a positive QuantiFERON Gold Plus Test (QFT). We estimated overall and age-stratified population-level prevalence and adjusted risk ratios (aRR) of TB infection for individual, household, an

The impact of HIV infection on skeletal maturity in peripubertal children in Zimbabwe: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: HIV infection and its treatment compromises skeletal development (growth and maturation). Skeletal maturity is assessed as bone age (BA) on hand and wrist radiographs. BA younger than chronological age (CA) indicates delayed development. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine differences between BA and CA (i.e., skeletal maturity deviation [SMD]), and risk factors associated with SMD in peripubertal children with and without HIV established on antiretroviral therapy (ART) including use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). METHODS: Children with HIV taking ART for a

Animal Models, Zoonotic Reservoirs, and Cross-Species Transmission of Emerging Human-Infecting Coronaviruses.

Over the past three decades, coronavirus (CoV) diseases have impacted humans more than any other emerging infectious disease. The recent emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), has resulted in huge economic disruptions and loss of human lives. The SARS-CoV-2 genome was found to mutate more rapidly due to sustained transmission in humans and potentially animals, resulting in variants of concern (VOCs) that threaten global human health. However, the primary difficulties are filling in the current knowl

Cross-Resistance and the Mechanisms of Cephalosporin-Resistant Bacteria in Urinary Tract Infections Isolated in Indonesia.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) by antibiotic-resistant strains has become increasingly problematic, with trends that differ from country to country. This study examined cross-resistance and the mechanisms of cephalosporin resistance in UTI-causative bacteria isolated in Indonesia. Antibiotic susceptibility tests based on Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards were done for UTI-causative strains (n = 50) isolated from patients in Indonesia in 2015-2016 and showed resistance against the third-generation cephalosporin. Mechanistic studies were carried out to confirm the presence

Adherence to guideline recommendations for urinary tract infections in adult women: a cross-sectional study.

AIM: To study whether changes in drug preferences in the Dutch guideline for the treatment of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) for General Practitioners (GPs) in 2013, resulted in corresponding changes in antibiotic dispensing. BACKGROUND: For the treatment of uncomplicated UTI, nitrofurantoin remained the first choice, while fosfomycin became the second choice and changed ranks with trimethoprim. For a subsequent febrile UTI, ciprofloxacin became the first choice and changed ranks with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, co-trimoxazole remained the third choice. METHODS: In this observational cross-s

Antibiotic prescribing patterns of general practice registrars for infective conjunctivitis: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION Over-prescription of antibiotics for common infective conditions is an important health issue. Infective conjunctivitis represents one of the most common eye-related complaints in general practice. Despite its self-limiting nature, there is evidence of frequent general practitioner (GP) antibiotic prescribing for this condition, which is inconsistent with evidence-based guidelines. AIM To investigate the prevalence and associations of GP registrars' (trainees') prescription of antibiotics for infective conjunctivitis. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the Registra

Cross-reactive Antibody Response between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV Infections.

The World Health Organization has declared the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, which is caused by a novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a pandemic. There is currently a lack of knowledge about the antibody response elicited from SARS-CoV-2 infection. One major immunological question concerns antigenic differences between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV. We address this question by analyzing plasma from patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-CoV and from infected or immunized mice. Our results show that, although cross-reactivity in antibody binding to the spike protein is common, cross-neutralization of the

Brief Report: Subclinical Kidney Dysfunction in HIV-Infected Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Most of the kidney dysfunction in HIV-positive children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) is attributed to tenofovir. There is a paucity of data on kidney dysfunction in tenofovir-naive children. The primary objective was to know the point prevalence of albuminuria and β2-microglobulinuria in HIV-infected children aged 3-18 years receiving ART. Albuminuria and β2-microglobulinuria were used as surrogates for glomerular and tubular dysfunction, respectively. The secondary objective was to determine their predictors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study-design. METHODS: One hundred co

The development, implementation and evaluation of a cross organisational clinical guideline for the management and prevention of wound infection.

BACKGROUND: The Tissue Viability services in acute and primary care in Leeds had concerns about the increasing inappropriate use of topical antiseptic dressings for wound management and were aware that the use was disproportionate to the evidence supporting their prescribing. A scoping exercise of the use of topical antiseptics and systemic antibiotic usage in Leeds led to the identification of heterogeneous prescribing of systemic antibiotics and an almost £500,000 spend on topical antiseptics across Leeds community. METHODS: The project involved the following stages. 1- Local scoping of top
