Dengue virus infection has emerged as one of the most important arthropod-borne diseases. In some dengue-infected individual, the disease progresses to its severe, life-threatening form, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). A study on the prevalence of leprosy is performed in "Emilio Daudinot" polyclinics, Guantanamo. The behaviour of leprosy according to clinical manifestations and results showing that lepromatous leprosy is the most frequent form, as well as the number of positive patients and the ones who present reactional status, are reported. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is rarely seen in the United States. Four Cuban immigrants traveled along the same route at different times from Cuba to Ecuador, then northward, including through the Darién Jungle in Panama. These patients had chronic ulcerative non-healing skin lesions and were given a diagnosis of leishmaniasis.

The distribution and abundance of a population of Caiman crocodilus fuscus were estimated by monthly counting of eye-shines at night, from February 1999 to March 2000 in six transects of Río Frío in the Caño Negro National Refuge (RNVSCN), Northern Costa Rica. March was the month with the greatest abundance of caimans observed. Data on the survival of 2 248 patients with cervical carcinoma, treated between1966 and 1972 at 3 oncologic centers in Cuba, are presented. Intracavitary radium application combined with external 60Co irradiation was the main treatment method. The most frequent complication was radiation proctitis, but fistulas occurred only in 1.6 per cent.

The similarities and differences between toxic/nutritional and hereditary optic neuropathy and the pathophysiologic mechanisms that they have in common are described. This is based on data from the epidemic suffered in Cuba in 1992, which affected the optic nerves of many individuals and the experience of the authors in dealing with various toxic optic neuropathies, as well as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Cuba due to dysphagia for the previous 5 months. Forty years previously, she had undergone esophagocoloplasty for caustic esophagitis. Adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in the colonic interposition. The tumor was resected with oncologic margins and food transit was successfully restored.

OBJECTIVE: the study carried out in Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus province was aimed at identifying the mollusk species present in the freshwater ecocystems as well as their distribution and abundance in each reservoir.
METHODS: two years--2005 and 2006--were analyzed through 2 samplings per years covering the rainy and the dry season; 20 reservoirs were sampled to determine the present freshwater mollusks. Mite species adapted to warm, humid climates are commonly found in house dust in the tropics.
