Effects of dietary oxidized soybean meal and oxidized soybean oil on hepatic lipid deposition, antioxidant capacity, inflammation, and apoptosis in blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala).

Soybean meal (SBM) and soybean oil (SO) are important aquafeed ingredients, but both are prone to oxidation. However, few studies have compared the effects of oxidized SBM (OSM) and oxidized SO (OSO) in fish. In this study, OSM and OSO were generated by SBM and SO under the same conditions and then used to evaluate their effects on liver antioxidant capacity, inflammation, and apoptosis in Megalobrama amblycephala. A total of 144 fish (initial body weight: 14.37 ± 0.13 g) were randomly divided into three groups and reared for 8 weeks. Both OSM and OSO increased plasma low-density lipoprotein c

Integrated Analysis of Physiological, Histological, and Transcriptomic Responses to Transport Density in Schizothorax nukiangensis.

Transport density is a pivotal regulatory factor during live fish transport, as it determines the intensity of stress responses and subsequent survival. With increasing demands for artificial propagation, stock enhancement, and scientific research, the frequency of transporting Schizothorax nukiangensis has risen substantially. This study evaluated the effects of different transport densities (100, 150, and 200 kg/m3) after 4 h on water quality, plasma biochemistry, tissue morphology, and transcriptional responses. High-density transport elevated ammonia nitrogen and temperature, reduced pH, a

Prevalent Hybridisation Between Highly Divergent Iberian Chub Species Produces Contrasting Outcomes Across Different Geographic and Time Scales.

Genomic data has revealed hybridisation is common in nature. Highly divergent allopatric species are often overlooked in our efforts to characterise the prevalence and consequences of hybridisation in natural systems, presumably because they are viewed as less likely to hybridise. Yet, such species are models to investigate later stages of the speciation continuum. Here, we study such a system-the Iberian chubs (Squalius spp.), a group of primary fish species with allopatric distributions across distinct environments and river catchments. Throughout their evolutionary history, the rivers inhab

Mortality and histopathology in sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) larvae exposed to pectenotoxin-2 and Dinophysis acuminata.

Toxic species of the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis can produce diarrheic toxins including okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxins (DTXs), and the non-diarrheic pectenotoxins (PTXs). Okadaic acid and DTXs cause diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in human consumers, and also cause cytotoxic, immunotoxic and genotoxic effects in a variety of mollusks and fishes at different life stages in vitro. The possible effects of co-produced PTXs or live cells of Dinophysis to aquatic organisms, however, are less understood. Effects on an early life stage of sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus), a co

Exposure to acute waterborne cadmium caused severe damage on lipid metabolism of freshwater fish, revealed by nuclear lipid droplet deposition in hepatocytes of rare minnow.

Cadmium (Cd) is a widely distributed aquatic toxic heavy metal with the potential to disrupt fish metabolism; however, more research is needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms. In the present study, rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) were used to detect the effects of cadmium on freshwater fish lipid metabolism and its underlying mechanism by histopathological observation, measurement of serum and liver biochemical indexes, and analysis of gene expression in terms of lipid oxidation, synthesis and transport. Here, severe damage, such as cytoplasmic lipid droplet (LD) accumulation, ectopic de

Myxobolus makombensis n. sp. infection in African carp Labeobarbus batesii from the Makombè River, Cameroon: morphological and molecular characterization.

In this study, we examined myxozoan infections of Labeobarbus batesii sampled from the Makombè River in Cameroon. Fish were infected with Myxobolus makombensis n. sp. in the gill filament and M. dibombensis in the fins. Mature myxospores of M. makombensis n. sp. are pyriform in frontal view and biconvex in lateral view, with a truncated and slightly narrow anterior end. Spore dimensions (mean ± SD, with range in parentheses) are 17.5 ± 0.22 (16.2-18.9) μm length, 13.4 ± 0.25 (12-14.9) μm width, and 7 ± 0.21 (6.7-7.5) μm thickness, and spores exhibit a conspicuous anterior intercapsular appendi

A NEW SPECIES OF MYXOBOLUS (CNIDARIA: MYXOSPOREA: MYXOBOLIDAE) FROM THE GILLS OF CREEK CHUB, SEMOTILUS ATROMACULATUS (CYPRINIFORMES: LEUCISCIDAE: PLAGIOPTERINAE), FROM THE OUACHITA DRAINAGE OF ARKANSAS.

During October and November 2021, 33 creek chubs, Semotilus atromaculatus, were collected from 3 sites in Polk County, Arkansas (Ouachita River drainage), and their gills, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs were examined for myxozoans. The gills of 9 (27%) were infected with a new myxozoan, Myxobolus fountainae n. sp. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data were from fresh and formalin-fixed preserved spores, while molecular data consisted of a 1918 base pair sequence of the partial small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis grouped M. fount

Genomic polymorphisms at the crhr2 locus improve feed conversion efficiency through alleviation of hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal axis activity in gibel carp (Carassius gibelio).

Improvement in fish feed conversion efficiency (FCE) is beneficial for sustaining global food fish supplies. Here, we show that a set of polymorphisms at locus of the corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 2 (crhr2), which is involved in hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis signaling, is associated with improved FCE in farmed allogynogenetic gibel carp strain CAS III compared with that in the wild gibel carp strain Dongting (DT). This set of polymorphisms downregulates the expression levels of crhr2 mRNA in the brain and pituitary tissues in gibel carp strain CAS III compared with th

Melatonin regulates ATP content and fertilising capacity of Onychostoma macrolepis spermatozoa by inhibiting ROS accumulation during semen storage in vitro.

Melatonin (MLT) is an efficient antioxidant that protects spermatozoa against damages caused by oxidative stress. In this study, to maintain good function of Onychostoma macrolepis spermatozoa during semen preservation invitro at 4°C, different concentrations of MLT (0.5, 1 and 2μM) were added to the semen. After storage (0, 24, 48 and 72h), 1μM MLT in semen markedly improved sperm quality, as reflected by better plasma membrane integrity, the relative steady level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and slower rate of decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. Activated spermatozoa in semen w

Chemicals Weaken Shoal Preference in the Rare Minnow Gobiocypris rarus.

Fish behavioral responses are sensitive to chemicals in the water. We tested rare minnow tested for their shoal preference, and the shoal (school) factors including nutritional status, body size, and shoal (school) size that can make their preference most stable were measured. Then shoal preference was measured again while fish and shoal were subjected to a concentration gradient of chemicals (cadmium ion [Cd2+ ], tricaine methanesulfonate [MS222], and p-chloroaniline). The results showed that single rare minnow preferred shoals over blank control tanks. In addition, this preference was most s

Host-parasite interaction as a toxicity test endpoint using asymmetrical exposures.

Interspecific relationships frequently determine the effect a pollutant can have on an organism, and this is especially true in closely interacting species such as hosts and parasites. The high spatial and temporal variability of contaminant concentrations combined with the movement of aquatic biota can further influence the consequences that are associated with contamination. We used a full factorial design for the exposed and unexposed partners of the relationship between the parasitic larvae (glochidia) of the European freshwater mussel (Anodonta anatina) and its host fish (Squalius cephalu

Effects of berberine on growth, liver histology, and expression of lipid-related genes in blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) fed high-fat diets.

Fatty liver of cultured fish often correlates closely with poor growth and low harvest yield. Some Chinese herbs can reduce hepatic fat storage. This study aimed to examine lipid-lowering effect of berberine (BBR) in blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala). Triplicate groups of fish were fed four experimental diets: low-fat diet (LFD, 5% fat), high-fat diet (HFD, 15% fat), and HFD supplemented with 50 or 100 mg BBR/kg diet (BBR50, BBR100). After 8-week feeding, growth performance, liver histology and fat deposition, and hepatic genes expression were examined. The results showed significan

Update on the distribution of the co-invasive Schyzocotyle acheilognathi (= Bothriocephalus acheilognathi), the Asian fish tapeworm, in freshwater fishes of Mexico.

The Asian fish tapeworm, Schyzocotyle acheilognathi (syn. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi) represents a threat to freshwater fish, mainly cyprinids, across the globe. This tapeworm possesses an extraordinary ability to adapt to different environmental conditions and, because of that, from its natural geographical origin in mainland Asia, it has colonized every continent except Antarctica. It is thought that this pathogenic tapeworm was first co-introduced into Mexico in 1965 from China, with the grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, although the first formal record of its presence was published in

Plerocercoids of the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum in brown trout Salmo trutta: substantial increase in infection after establishment of European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus.

This study focuses on plerocercoids of the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum in brown trout Salmo trutta from the subalpine lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in south-central Norway. Salmo trutta was the only fish species in this lake until European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus was registered in 1969. The P. phoxinus population increased substantially in the following years. In contrast with the 1969-1972 period, when plerocercoids of D. ditremum were practically absent in S. trutta, there was a high prevalence and intensity of infection in the 2013 S. trutta samples. Because the life cycle of D. ditremum in

The draft genome of blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) reveals the development of intermuscular bone and adaptation to herbivorous diet.

The blunt snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala is the economically most important cyprinid fish species. As an herbivore, it can be grown by eco-friendly and resource-conserving aquaculture. However, the large number of intermuscular bones in the trunk musculature is adverse to fish meat processing and consumption. As a first towards optimizing this aquatic livestock, we present a 1.116-Gb draft genome of M. amblycephala, with 779.54 Mb anchored on 24 linkage groups. Integrating spatiotemporal transcriptome analyses, we show that intermuscular bone is formed in the more basal teleosts by intra

Bold, Sedentary Fathead Minnows Have More Parasites.

Parasites that rely on trophic transmission can manipulate the behavior of an intermediate host to compromise the host's antipredator competence and increase the probability of reaching the next host. Selection for parasite manipulation is diminished when there is significant risk of host death to causes other than consumption by a suitable definitive host for the parasite. Consequently, behavioral manipulation by parasites can be expected to be subtle. Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus (Op) is a trematode parasite that has a bird-snail-fish host life cycle. Fathead minnows are a common interme

The influence of changing prey availability on the prevalence of Diphyllobothrium in river otters from Yellowstone National Park.

Parasite prevalence in predatory mammals is influenced by numerous factors including diet, sex, season, and habitat. We examined the effect of such factors on the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in North American river otters ( Lontra canadensis ) in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park. Otters in this ecosystem have recently experienced a decline in their main prey, Yellowstone cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri), and have, in turn, increased consumption of alternative foods. Helminths were found in 13.2% of otter fecal samples. The dominant parasite was a Diphyll
