Scavenger receptor class F member 2 is an intracellular receptor for hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects hepatocytes by specific binding to the cell-surface receptor-sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP)-through the preS1 region of its large envelope protein, followed by a less well-understood transport process across the cytoplasm to the nucleus. Here, we report that scavenger receptor class F member 2 (SCARF2), a single-pass transmembrane protein, functions as an intracellular receptor for HBV. SCARF2 binds to a preS1 region downstream of the NTCP binding site through its N-terminal epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains 4-6, and its proline-r

Neuropathology of Multiple System Atrophy, a Glioneuronal Degenerative Disease.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a fatal disease characterized pathologically by the widespread occurrence of aggregated α-synuclein in the oligodendrocytes referred to as glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs). α-Synuclein aggregates are also found in the oligodendroglial nuclei and neuronal cytoplasm and nuclei. It is uncertain whether the primary source of α-synuclein in GCIs is originated from neurons or oligodendrocytes. Accumulating evidence suggests that there are two degenerative processes in this disease. One possibility is that numerous GCIs are associated with the impairment of oligo-m

Pathogen trafficking pathways and host phosphoinositide metabolism.

Phosphoinositide (PI) glycerolipids are key regulators of eukaryotic signal transduction, cytoskeleton architecture and membrane dynamics. The host cell PI metabolism is targeted by intracellular bacterial pathogens, which evolved intricate strategies to modulate uptake processes and vesicle trafficking pathways. Upon entering eukaryotic host cells, pathogenic bacteria replicate in distinct vacuoles or in the host cytoplasm. Vacuolar pathogens manipulate PI levels to mimic or modify membranes of subcellular compartments and thereby establish their replicative niche. Legionella pneumophila, Bru

[The glandular compartments of the canine placenta--a scanning electron microscopic study].

The glandular chambers in the spongy zone grow out of the superficial endometrial glands during the implantation of the embryo. To our knowledge, no scanning electron microscopic investigations of the spongy layer in the placenta of the bitch have been published so far. We examined the placenta at the 44. day of pregnancy by scanning electron microscopy. The glandular epithelium in the spongy zone forms extensive folds, which fill up most of the lumen of the glandular chambers. They are lined by a simple columnar epithelium with high apical protrusions. The luminal surface of the cells is bord

Electron microscopy of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia.

We have investigated two cases of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia using the electron microscope. The alveolar septa were thickened due to edema and an infiltrate of numerous mononuclear cells and eosinophils, with a few lymphocytes and occasional plasma cells. Macrophages were often located close to eosinophils and extracellular eosinophilic granules. Occasional eosinophilic granules were observed in the cytoplasm of mononuclear cells. The most striking finding was the presence of distinctive elongated, narrow, tubular inclusions in the cytoplasm of several of the mononuclear cells. These inclu

Electron microscopic observations on the innervation of the sphincter of Oddi in the dog.

The ultrastructure and acetylcholinesterase activity of the intrinsic innervation of the sphincter of Oddi of eight adult dogs was studied by electron microscopy. A rich distribution of unmyelinated axons embedded individually or as groups within Schwann cell cytoplasm ("innervation fasciculee"), is to be observed. A few myelinated fibres were also observed. Many of the axons are acetylcholinesterase-positive. Three main types of nerve terminals are distinguished according to their vesicle populations. Individual nerve cells or small groups of nerve cells were scattered between the smooth musc

A soft tissue perineurioma and a hybrid tumor of perineurioma and schwannoma.

Perineuriomas are composed of differentiated perineurial cells. Perineuriomas have been recently recognized by the immunoreactivity for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). Microscopically, perineuriomas show proliferation of spindle cells with wavy nuclei and delicate elongated bipolar cytoplasmic processes. The tumor cells are usually negative for the S-100 protein. Ultrastructurally, perineurial cells reveal slender, nontapered processes containing pinocytic vesicles and discontinuous basal lamina. Interestingly, hybrid tumors of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor (PNST) have been recently

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with EMa+ cells. Report of a case suggesting perineurial cell differentiation.

A case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) with epithelial membrane antigen (EMA)-positive cells is described. The tumor was excised from the left groin of a 28-year-old woman. It showed characteristic histologic features of DFSP with typical diffuse immunohistochemical positivity for CD34. Moreover, scattered neoplastic cells expressed EMA, suggesting perineural cell differentiation. Ultrastructural study found perineurial cell features, such as thin long bipolar cytoplasmic processes, pinocytotic vesicles, fragments of external lamina and/or external lamina-like material, attachment pl

Fine structure of intrascrotal lymphatic vessels infected by Wuchereria bancrofti adult worms.

Lymphangiectasia represents a basic phenomenon of acute and chronic pathology in lymphatic filariasis, and the prevalence or degree of lymphatic dilation caused by filarial worms is considered an indirect measurement of the altered lymphatic function. We examined the morphological alterations of intrascrotal lymphatic vessels surgically removed from a volunteer infected by adult worms of Wuchereria bancrofti. Scanning electron microscopy revealed lymphatic vessels with an irregular endothelium and adherent flattened lymphocytes and macrophages in variable proportions. On transmission electron

Ultrastructure of Cell Organelles in Pre-implantation Embryos from Cows with Different Body Condition Score.

Morphology of important cell organelles (mitochondria, lipid droplets, vacuoles, inclusion bodies and apoptotic bodies) in embryos derived from cows with different body condition score (BCS) was analysed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Embryos were recovered on 7th day after the insemination by a standard non-surgical flushing of the uterine horns from superovulated Holstein Friesian cows with BCS 2, 3, 4 and 5. Thereafter, the good quality blastocysts were processed for TEM. The electronograms were evaluated by stereological analysis. The relative volume of lipid droplets in BCS4 a

A case of late-onset riboflavin responsive multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) with a novel mutation in ETFDH gene.

We report a novel mutation in the electron transfer flavoprotein dehydrogenase (EFTDH) gene in an adolescent Chinese patient with late-onset riboflavin-responsive multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) characterized by muscle weakness as early symptom. At the age of 9 years, the patient experienced progressive muscle weakness. Blood creatine kinase level and aminotransferase were higher than normal. The muscle biopsy revealed lipid storage myopathy. Serum acylcarnitine and urine organic acid analyses were consistent with MADD. Genetic mutation analysis revealed a compound heterozygo

The motor trigeminal nucleus of the rat: analysis of neuronal structure and the synaptic organization of noradrenergic afferents.

The organization of the rat motor trigeminal nucleus (MTN) and the morphology of noradrenergic afferents terminating in this cranial motor nucleus were analyzed with light and transmission electron microscopy. Two morphologically distinct types of neurons are present in the MTN. Large multipolar neurons are the most prevalent cell type and are distributed uniformly throughout the nucleus. The morphology of these cells is identical to that of motor neurons described previously in both the brainstem and spinal cord. The neurons are characterized ultrastructurally by a light, organelle-rich cytop

Cytochemical studies of ameloblasts and the surface layer of enamel of the rat incisor at the maturation stage.

In order to elucidate the cytochemical properties of the membranous structure between enamel and ameloblasts of the rat incisor at the maturation stage, chromic phosphotungstic acid (Cr-PTA) and periodic acid-silver methenamine (PA-silver) techniques for electron microscopy were employed in combination with a digestion test with hyaluronidase, neuraminidase, collagenase or trypsin. Also, acid phosphatase activity of ameloblasts at the maturation stage was examined with a modified GOMORI's metal salt method. An intensely Cr-PTA reactive band approximately 0.1 micron thick appeared along the sur

Ultrastructure of Vitellogenic Ovarian Follicles and Morphogenesis of the Oocyte Envelope in the Eurasian Ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua Linnaeus 1758) (Teleostei, Perciformes).

The ovarian follicle of the Eurasian ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua) consists of a single oocyte surrounded by follicular cells, a basal lamina, and thecal cells. The growth of the oocyte during vitellogenesis and the ultrastructure and morphogenesis of its envelope are undescribed in this species. To address these issues, vitellogenic follicles were examined. The oocyte cytoplasm is divided into three compartments: the perinuclear compartment, the endoplasm (which contains yolk spheres and lipid droplets), and the periplasm. The components of the Balbiani body, including mitochondria with well-d

Ultrastructural characteristics and lectin-binding properties of M cells in the follicle-associated epithelium of chicken caecal tonsils.

To clarify the nature of M cells, the detailed ultrastructural characteristics and lectin-binding properties of M cells were investigated in follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) of chicken caecal tonsils. M cells presented various outlines from columnar to dome shaped. Their polymorphism was dependent on the number of harboured intraepithelial migrating cells. The lighter and larger nuclei of M cells were situated at more apical levels in the epithelial lining compared with those of neighbouring microvillous epithelial cells. The microvilli, which were significantly shorter and thicker than th

Not just fat: the structure and function of the lipid droplet.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are independent organelles that are composed of a lipid ester core and a surface phospholipid monolayer. Recent studies have revealed many new proteins, functions, and phenomena associated with LDs. In addition, a number of diseases related to LDs are beginning to be understood at the molecular level. It is now clear that LDs are not an inert store of excess lipids but are dynamically engaged in various cellular functions, some of which are not directly related to lipid metabolism. Compared to conventional membrane organelles, there are still many uncertainties concerning

Microscopy of the koala mandibular (submandibular) glands.

Koala mandibular (submandibular) glands are compound tubuloacinar glands, the secretory units of which consist only of serous cells. Intercellular canaliculi occur between the serous cells, which are continuous with a minute lumen that courses through the centre of each secretory unit. Intercalated ducts are abundant and join striated ducts, the latter being characterized by elaborate basolateral infoldings of the plasmalemma. Secretory granules within the serous cells fail to stain with either the PAS or Alcian Blue (pH 2.5) staining procedures. Ultrastructurally, the secretory granules are m

Light and electron microscopic observations of fabrication, release, and fate of biphasic secretion granules produced by epididymal epithelial principal cells of the fan-throated lizard Sitana ponticeriana cuvier.

The epididymis of the fan-throated lizard Sitana ponticeriana was examined with light and transmission electron microscopy to understand the cellular mechanisms of fabrication of secretion granules in epithelial principal cells, granule release into the lumen, and the fate of the dense structured granules after reaching the lumen. Principal cells of the ductus epididymis, except at the cauda, secrete electron-dense biphasic granules copiously, which decrease in abundance from the initial segment to corpus. The principal cell possesses a prominent Golgi apparatus and all versions of endoplasmic
