Laparoscopic Exploration for Penetrating Abdominal Trauma Caused by Deer Antlers: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating abdominal trauma poses a major challenge in trauma surgery, with most cases resulting from knives or firearms. This report describes a rare case caused by deer antlers and highlights the role of diagnostic laparoscopy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old man presented with epigastric and right flank pain after deer antler penetration. On arrival, he was hemodynamically stable but diaphoretic. Physical examination revealed two abdominal wall wounds without obvious contamination. Ultrasonography revealed free fluid in the upper abdomen. Contrast-enhanced CT identified two…

Nasopharyngeal Bacterial-Fungal Dysbiosis in Respiratory-Diseased Endangered Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii).

BACKGROUND: The nasopharyngeal microbiome is crucial for respiratory health in mammals, yet it remains poorly characterized in the endangered forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), particularly in the context of disease. METHODS: We compared the bacterial (16S rRNA) and fungal (ITS2) communities in the nasopharynx of healthy (n = 6) and clinically diseased (n = 6) individuals. RESULTS: Although alpha diversity did not differ significantly, beta diversity (PCoA) analysis revealed distinct bacterial (PERMANOVA, R2 = 0.165, p = 0.014) and fungal (R2 = 0.577, p = 0.003) community structures bet…

Persistence of SARS-CoV-2 Alpha Variant in White-Tailed Deer, Ohio, USA.

Free-ranging white-tailed deer (WTD) are highly susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Through an opportunistic sampling of WTD in northeast Ohio, USA, during January-March 2023, we identified 6 SARS-CoV-2 lineages from 36 sequences using the pangolin lineages tool, including the B.1.1.7 lineage (Alpha variant) and BQ.1.1, BQ.1.1.63, BQ.1.1.67, BQ.1.23, and XBB.1.5.35 lineages (Omicron variant). The Alpha variant, introduced by a single human-to-deer transmission event, was detected in 5 WTD in January 2023, more than 1 year after the most recent detection of the Alpha variant in humans in Ohio …

Matching the green wave: growing season length determines embryonic diapause in roe deer.

The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is Europe's most widespread ungulate, notable for its unique trait of embryonic diapause (delayed blastocyst implantation after mating) and an ongoing debate regarding how climate change affects its parturition timing. Given the relatively constant timing of the rut, roe deer could cope with advancing greening by adjusting its diapause end. Here, we bridge the gap on factors influencing roe deer's diapause by analysing 390 uteri from legally hunted roe deer females in Germany (2017-2020), which we macroscopically examined for the presence of visible embryonic…

Elucidating metabolites and biosynthetic pathways during musk maturation: insights from forest musk deer.

BACKGROUND: Musk is a blackish-brown solid used in traditional Chinese medicine with a unique and intense scent. Limited evidence on its function and pathways is available from databases due to the complexity, variability, and derivativity of chemical composition. RESULTS: In this study, musk samples from three different stages during maturation: the end of June (group A), August (group B), and October (group C) were harvested from six male forest musk deer. A gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approach was used to explore the chemical composition. Results indicated the presence…

Case report: Renal malformations in wild roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Central Poland.

Kidney diseases are observed in various wild animal species, more often noted in captive than in free-ranging animals. There are few reports in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Two kidney malformations were encountered while reviewing and collecting the roe deer samples. Kidney malformations were found in samples from two roe deer in Central Poland, one in 5-year-old female near Węgrów (50 km northeast of Warsaw) and one in 7-year-old male near Rawa Mazowiecka (75 km southwest of Warsaw). The female had a smaller (5 cm long and weighed 20 g) shrunken kidney (no prominent histopathological chang…

Deer Antler S-Adenosylmethionine Ameliorates Depression-Like Behaviors and Neuroinflammation in CUMS Mice.

AIM: To investigate the effects and mechanisms of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) from deer antler on improving depression-like behaviors in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mice. METHODS: The CUMS method was used to establish a mouse depression model. The relationship between SAM and HIF-1α was analyzed by small molecule-protein docking and molecular dynamics simulation. RESULTS: Network pharmacology analysis showed that the effect of SAM is related to HIF-1α. When shRNA-HIF-1α was used to silence the expression of HIF-1α, the effect of SAM was inhibited. The improvement of depression-li…

Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania 2021-2024.

SARS-CoV-2 continues to transmit and evolve in humans and animals. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been previously identified as a zoonotic reservoir for SARS-CoV-2 with high rates of infection and probable spillback into humans. Here we report sampling 1,127 white-tailed deer (WTD) in Pennsylvania, and a genomic analysis of viral dynamics spanning 1,017 days between April 2021 and January 2024. To assess viral load and genotypes, RNA was isolated from retropharyngeal lymph nodes and analyzed using RT-qPCR and viral whole genome sequencing. Samples showed a 14.64% positivity ra…

Distribution of Nasal Myiases Affecting Roe Deer in Spain and Associated Risk Factors.

This study aims to assess the current situation of the main nasal bot flies (Cephenemyia stimulator and Oestrus ovis) affecting roe deer in Spain and to identify the factors influencing their spread. Between 2018 and 2025, 1600 roe deer heads were examined. The overall prevalence of C. stimulator was 39.9% (CI 95% 37.5-42.3), with a mean larval intensity of 44.1 (SD 71.99). In contrast, a low mean larval burden of O. ovis (2.6; SD 1.90) was found in 1.6% of the animals (CI 95% 1.0-2.3). Our findings revealed the first case of mixed myiasis caused by both oestrids. Roe deer abundance was the ma…

Perspectives of New York State residents on deer management, hunting, and predator reintroduction.

High white-tailed deer abundance in the United States represents an ecological and human health threat. Reducing deer populations by lethal means and facilitating return of large predators are two potential, but controversial, management options. We used an online questionnaire to measure perspectives on deer management and predator return among a stratified sample of New York State residents. We found widespread acceptance (> 70%) for reducing deer populations using lethal means if doing so would reduce Lyme disease, increase forest regeneration, protect native plants and animals, and improve…

Biological Activities of Deer Antler-Derived Peptides on Human Chondrocyte and Bone Metabolism.

Orally administered "tortoiseshell and deer antler gelatin" is a common traditional medicine for patients with osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. From the pepsin-digested gelatin, we previously isolated and identified the osteoblast-stimulating pentapeptide, TSKYR. Its trypsin digestion products include the dipeptide YR, enhancing calcium ion uptake, and tripeptide TSK, resulting in remarkable 30- and 50-fold increases in mineralized nodule area and density in human osteoblast cells. These peptides were chemically synthesized in this study. The composition of deer antler preparations comprises no…

Bone metabolism associated with annual antler regeneration: a deer insight into osteoporosis reversal.

Osteoporosis, a metabolic disorder, remains challenging to treat due to limited understanding of its underlying mechanism. The annual cycle of "cyclic physiological osteoporosis (CPO)" and its full reversal in male deer represents a unique natural model for studying this condition. Deer antlers, weighing up to 25 kg/pair, derive over 60% of their mineral contents from deer skeleton during mineralization. Based on the literature, we propose to divide CPO and its reversal into two phases: Phase I (approximately 115 days): from hard antler casting to the end of antler linear growth, marked by sim…

Characterization of Classical Sheep Scrapie in White-tailed Deer after Experimental Oronasal Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Classic scrapie is a prion disease of sheep and goats that is associated with accumulation of abnormal prion protein (PrPSc) in the central nervous and lymphoid tissues. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is the prion disease of cervids. This study was conducted to determine the susceptibility of white-tailed deer (WTD) to the classic scrapie agent. METHODS: We inoculated WTD (n = 5) by means of a concurrent oral/intranasal exposure with the classic scrapie agent from sheep or oronasally with the classic scrapie agent from goats (n = 6). RESULTS: All deer exposed to the agent of class…

Associations between nesting, stereotypy, and working memory in deer mice: response to levetiracetam.

BACKGROUND: Some deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) exhibit various phenotypes of persistent behaviors. It remains unknown if and how said phenotypes associate with early-life and adult cognitive perturbations, and whether potentially cognitive enhancing drugs might modify such associations. Here, we explored the longitudinal relationship between early-life behavioral flexibility and the expression of persistent behavior in adulthood. We also investigated how said phenotypes might associate with working memory in adulthood, and how this association might respond to chronic exposure to …

Recreation reduces tick density through fine-scale risk effects on deer space-use.

Altered interactions between pathogens, their hosts and vectors have potential consequences for human disease risk. Notably, tick-borne pathogens, many of which are associated with growing deer abundance, show global increasing prevalence and pose increasing challenges for disease prevention. Human activities can largely affect the patterns of deer space-use and can therefore be potential management tools to alleviate human-wildlife conflicts. Here, we tested how deer space-use patterns are influenced by human recreational activities, and how this in turn affects the spatial distribution of th…
