The Underestimated Role of Mast Cells in the Pathogenesis of Rhinopathies.

Mast cells (MCs) are involved in several biological processes, such as defense against pathogens, immunomodulation, tissue repair after injury, and angiogenesis. MCs have been shown to change from protective immune cells to potent pro-inflammatory cells, influencing the progression of many pathological conditions, including autoimmune diseases and cancers. The role of MCs in the pathogenesis of rhinopathies has often been underestimated, since previous studies have focused their attention on eosinophils and neutrophils, while MCs were considered involved exclusively in allergic rhinitis. Spleen rupture due to brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infection worldwide; it is caused by infection with the bacterial species Brucella and leads to severe diseases in humans and animals. In Turkey, this bacterial species has not been completely eradicated and is commonly found in animals (such as goats or sheep). Brucellosis can lead to various symptoms, affect multiple systems, and cause splenomegaly in the case of spleen involvement. In contrast to traumatic spleen ruptures, spontaneous spleen ruptures are rare and most commonly occur because of infectious causes. A 52-year-old man was treated at our infectiou

Properties of an Antimicrobial Molecule Produced by an Escherichia coli Champion.

Over recent decades, the number and frequency of severe pathogen infections have been increasing. Pathogen mitigation strategies in human medicine or in livestock operations are vital to combat emerging arsenals of bacterial virulence and defense mechanisms. Since the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, the competitive nature of bacteria has been considered for the potential treatment or mitigation of pathogens. Previously, we identified a strong E. coli competitor with probiotic properties producing a diffusible antimicrobial molecule(s) that inhibited the growth of Shiga toxin-producing E

New primary immunodeficiency diseases: context and future.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are genetic disorders classically characterized by impaired host defense and an increased susceptibility to infections. It is now appreciated that these conditions broadly include variations in the genetic code that cause dysregulated immune function. This review highlights the newly defined PIDs in the 2017 International Union of Immunologic Societies (IUIS) report, current approaches to diagnosing PIDs, and the implications for the future management of PIDs. RECENT FINDINGS: With the advances in and increased commercial availabilit

Exploring the Effect of Ginsenoside Rh1 in a Sleep Deprivation-Induced Mouse Memory Impairment Model.

Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (Araliaceae) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for enhancing cognition for thousands of years. Ginsenoside Rh1, a constituent of ginseng root, as with other constituents, has memory-improving effects in normal mice and scopolamine-induced amnesic mice. Sleep deprivation (SD) is associated with memory impairment through induction of oxidative stress. The present study investigated the effect of Rh1 against SD-induced cognitive impairment and attempted to define the possible mechanisms involved. Ginsenoside Rh1 (20 μmol/kg; 40 μmol/kg) and modafinil (0.42 g/k

Natural Inhibitors of Snake Venom Metalloendopeptidases: History and Current Challenges.

The research on natural snake venom metalloendopeptidase inhibitors (SVMPIs) began in the 18th century with the pioneering work of Fontana on the resistance that vipers exhibited to their own venom. During the past 40 years, SVMPIs have been isolated mainly from the sera of resistant animals, and characterized to different extents. They are acidic oligomeric glycoproteins that remain biologically active over a wide range of pH and temperature values. Based on primary structure determination, mammalian plasmatic SVMPIs are classified as members of the immunoglobulin (Ig) supergene protein famil

Recent progress in medicinal investigations on trichosanthin and other ribosome inactivating proteins from the plant genus Trichosanthes.

Ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) are toxic RNA N-glycosidases that cleave an adenine-ribose glycosidic bond at position adenine(4324) with the conserved ricin/α-sarcin loop in the eukaryotic 28S ribosomal RNA. RIPs have captured the attention of botanists, biochemists, and drug discoverers, due to their diverse potent defensive activities, and inter alia, their antitumor and anti-HIV activities. Out of the 145 families of plants, Trichosanthes ranks among the top 5 genera with a good potential of use for discovery of anticancer drugs. Trichosanthin (TCS) is a famous type I RIP purified fr

Porcine teschovirus polioencephalomyelitis in western Canada.

Blastomycosis is endemic in regions of North America that border the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, as well as in the Mississippi River and Ohio River basins. Men are affected more often than women and children because men are more likely to participate in activities that put them at risk for exposure to Blastomyces dermatitidis. Human infection occurs when soil containing microfoci of mycelia is disturbed and airborne conidia are inhaled. If natural defenses in the alveoli fail to contain the infection, lymphohematogenous dissemination ensues. Normal host responses generate a charact

Emergency medicine tools to manage smallpox (vaccinia) vaccination complications: clinical practice guideline and policies and procedures.

In December 2002, the federal government began a program to immunize approximately 500000 civilian public health and health care workers with smallpox (vaccinia) vaccine as a part of our pre-event defense against bioterrorism. First responders will likely follow, and the general US population might be offered vaccination in the next 1 to 2 years. Recent reports that suggest the possible association of the vaccine to adverse cardiac events (including deaths), liability concerns for hospitals, and the availability of compensation for workers with vaccine complications have significantly reduced

VA Vascular Injury Study (VAVIS): VA-DoD extremity injury outcomes collaboration.

BACKGROUND: Limb injuries comprise 50-60% of U.S. Service member's casualties of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Combat-related vascular injuries are present in 12% of this cohort, a rate 5 times higher than in prior wars. Improvements in medical and surgical trauma care, including initial in-theatre limb salvage approaches (IILS) have resulted in improved survival and fewer amputations, however, the long-term outcomes such as morbidity, functional decline, and risk for late amputation of salvaged limbs using current process of care have not been studied. The long-term care of these injured warf

Comparison of stress fractures of male and female recruits during basic training in the Israeli anti-aircraft forces.

BACKGROUND: In military basic training, stress fractures are a common orthopedic problem. Female recruits have a significantly higher incidence of stress fractures than do male recruits. Because the Israeli Defense Forces opened traditionally male roles in combat units to female recruits, their high risk for stress fractures is of concern. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of stress fractures during Israeli Defense Forces anti-aircraft basic training among otherwise healthy young male and female recruits, in terms of anatomic distribution and severity. DESIGN: Ten mixed gender batteries,

Synergistic effects of Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Bacillus subtilis on cadmium accumulation in Forsythia suspensa.

Cadmium (Cd(II)) contamination threatens agricultural systems and the safety of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. While beneficial microbes can alleviate Cd(II) stress in plants, the synergistic mechanisms underlying microbial co-inoculation in medicinal plant species remain unclear. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Bacillus subtilis on Forsythia suspensa under Cd(II) stressed. The results showed that co-inoculation achieved markedly better effects than single-strain inoculation. Specifically, the HRB treatment enhanced plant heig

Identification of Novel Genomic Variants in COVID-19 Patients Using Whole-Exome Sequencing: Exploring the Plausible Targets of Functional Genomics.

Covid-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus has emerged as an immense burden and an unparalleled global health challenge in recorded human history. The clinical characteristics and risk factors of COVID-19 exhibit considerable variability, leading to a spectrum of clinical severity. Moreover, the likelihood of exposure to the virus may differ based on comorbidity status as comorbid illnesses have mechanisms that can considerably increase mortality by reducing the body's ability to withstand injury. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is essential for orchestrating innate immune cell defen

Immunological reaction to magnesium-based implants for orthopedic applications. What do we know so far? A systematic review on in vivo studies.

Magnesium-based implants (Mg) became an attractive candidate in orthopedic surgery due to their valuable properties, such as osteoconductivity, biodegradability, elasticity and mechanical strength. However, previous studies on biodegradable and non-biodegradable metal implants showed that these materials are not inert when placed in vivo as they interact with host defensive mechanisms. The aim of this study was to systematically review available in vivo studies with Mg-based implants that investigated immunological reactions to these implants. The following questions were raised: Do different

The dawn of Darwinian medicine.

While evolution by natural selection has long been a foundation for biomedical science, it has recently gained new power to explain many aspects of disease. This progress results largely from the disciplined application of what has been called the adaptations program. We show that this increasingly significant research paradigm can predict otherwise unsuspected facets of human biology, and that it provides new insights into the causes of medical disorders, such as those discussed below: 1. Infection. Signs and symptoms of the host-parasite contest can be categorized according to whether they r

Research in child psychoanalysis: twenty-five-year follow-up of a severely disturbed child.

In an era of managed care, psychoanalytic treatment of children is under fire as critics question whether the evidence of success in child analysis is sufficiently robust to warrant the large commitment of time and money required for this treatment. This article chronicles the history and current state of research at the Anna Freud Centre, and describes the evolution of a database that has methodically recorded and systematically organized data from over 750 cases of children referred to the Centre over a forty-five-year period. Analysis of this database has determined what kinds of childhood
