Catalytic dehydration of 2-propanol on (WO3)3 clusters on TiO2(110).

Our study of a (WO3)3/TiO2(110) model mixed oxide catalyst shows that this system is an extremely efficient for dehydration of alcohols, effectively lowering the energy barrier as much as possible for an endothermic reaction without yielding a significant concentration of other side products.

Breastfeeding-associated neonatal hypernatremic dehydration in a medical center: a clinical investigation.

BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration amongst exclusively breastfed neonates due to inadequate breastfeeding or underfeeding is a potentially devastating condition. We investigated the epidemiological and clinic features of hypernatremic dehydration. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of neonates that were less than 28 days of age, weighing > or =2000 g with gestational age of 36 weeks born between January 2002 and December 2005, who had meet the criteria of hypernatremic dehydration, including (1) exclusively breastfed; (2) loss of weight 12% or more from birth weight; …

[Acute renal failure following NSAID use in 2 children with subclinical dehydration].

A 13,5-year-old girl was seen a few days after she had taken an overdose of NSAIDs and a 12,5-year-old girl presented with continuous epigastric pain with radiation to the left side for the past 3 days, a subfebrile temperature, loss of appetite and nausea without vomiting after she had taken an NSAID a few times following a painful accident. Laboratory tests showed that both girls were dehydrated, even though this was not visible on physical examination. Fractional sodium excretion was below 1%. Predisposing factors for the dehydration were little fluid intake during the previous days, heavy …

Oral versus intravenous rehydration for treating dehydration due to gastroenteritis in children.

BACKGROUND: Dehydration associated with gastroenteritis is a serious complication. Oral rehydration is an effective and inexpensive treatment, but some physicians prefer intravenous methods. OBJECTIVES: To compare oral with intravenous therapy for treating dehydration due to acute gastroenteritis in children. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register (March 2006), CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library 2006, Issue 1), MEDLINE (1966 to March 2006), EMBASE (1974 to March 2006), LILACS (1982 to March 2006), and reference lists. Children at risk of developing dehydration from diarrhoea: a case-control study.

To identify the factors related to dehydration from diarrhoea, a hospital-based case-control study was carried out among under-2-year-old Bangladeshi children. The study compared 80 cases who had 'some' or severe dehydration with 160 age-matched controls who had 'no signs' of dehydration. All the cases and controls were examined and the mothers were interviewed in the hospital and followed at home on the 14th day of illness. Thirty-eight factors were studied for their probable influence on the development of dehydration. In bivariate analysis, 17 factors were found to be associated significant…

Effects of dehydration, hypohydration, and hyperhydration on tolerance during uncompensable heat stress.

The present study examined the effects of dehydration from prior exercise on subsequent exercise tolerance time (TT) that involved wearing nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protective clothing. It was hypothesised that TT would be reduced in the dehydrated state. Ten men undertook continuous treadmill walking at 4.8 km.h-1 at 35 degrees C and 50% relative humidity, wearing NBC clothing while euhydrated (EU) or dehydrated (D) by 2.3% of body weight. Hydration status had no impact on thermoregulatory or cardiovascular responses during exercise. Also rectal temperature at exhaustion did not…

Muscle blood flow is reduced with dehydration during prolonged exercise in humans.

1. The present study examined whether the blood flow to exercising muscles becomes reduced when cardiac output and systemic vascular conductance decline with dehydration during prolonged exercise in the heat. A secondary aim was to determine whether the upward drift in oxygen consumption (VO2) during prolonged exercise is confined to the active muscles. 2. Seven euhydrated, endurance-trained cyclists performed two bicycle exercise trials in the heat (35 C; 40-50 % relative humidity; 61 +/- 2 % of maximal VO2), separated by 1 week. During the first trial (dehydration trial, DE), they bicycled u…

Dehydration reverses vasopressin antagonist-induced diuresis and aquaporin-2 downregulation in rats.

To examine the involvement of vasopressin and dehydration in the regulation of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) expression in rat kidney, we investigated the effects of treatment for 60 h with the specific V2-receptor antagonist OPC-31260 (OPC), alone and in conjunction with dehydration for the last 12 h. Changes in AQP2 protein and mRNA expression in kidney inner medulla were determined by Western and Northern blotting, and AQP2 distribution was analyzed by immunocytochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy. Treatment with OPC increased urine output fourfold, with a reciprocal decrease in urine osmolality. …

Effects of dehydration on thermoregulatory responses of horses during low-intensity exercise.

Effects of dehydration on thermoregulatory and metabolic responses were studied in six horses during 40 min of exercise eliciting approximately 40% of maximal O2 consumption and for 30 min after exercise. Horses were exercised while euhydrated (C), 4 h after administration of furosemide (FDH; 1.0 mg/kg i.v.) to induce isotonic dehydration, and after 30 h without water (DDH) to induce hypertonic dehydration. Cardiac output was significantly lower in FDH (144.1 +/- 8.0 l/min) and in DDH (156.6 +/- 6.9 l/min) than in C (173.1 +/- 6.2 l/min) after 30 min of exercise. When DDH, FDH, and C values we…

Vasopressin in blood and third ventricle CSF during dehydration, thirst, and hemorrhage.

Samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were collected from the anterior part of the third cerebral ventricle of mongrel dogs with a chronically implanted device. Repeated experiments with simultaneous sampling of CSF and venous blood in 60- to 90-min intervals were performed in conscious dogs after 24-h water deprivation and during subsequent rehydration by drinking, during thirst stimulation by intravenous infusion of 5% saline, and during blood removal (12 ml X kg body wt-1). The CSF and plasma samples were analyzed for osmolality and arginine vasopressin (AVP) with a radioimmunoassay. Compare

Exercise-induced hemolysis in sickle cell anemia: shear sensitivity and erythrocyte dehydration.

We describe a steady-state patient with sickle cell anemia (SS disease) who developed sporadic hemoglobinuria, historically related to vigorous exercise. We studied him and four other patients with SS disease and demonstrated exercise-induced hemoglobinemia. To see if SS erythrocytes were abnormally fragile when exposed to shear forces that could be generated in small vessels of exercising muscles, we exposed them to physiologic shear rates in a cone-plate viscometer. We show that SS erythrocytes are more shear sensitive than normal erythrocytes. This phenomenon is directly related to the pres

Spectral characteristics of metachromatically stained cartilage: effects of enzymatic degradation and dehydration.

When a microspectrophotometer was used to study cartilage, stained metachromatically with Azure A and Safranin O, the following 3 points were made: 1. the absorption maximum of stained cartilage matrix is identical to that reported for solutions of these dyes containing chondroitin sulfate; 2. partial enzymatic degradation of the cartilage matrix has no effect on the position of the absorption peak (although the intensity is greatly diminished); 3. ethanolic dehydration shifts the absorption peak somewhat toward the orthochromatic position, and decreases the intensity of the stain.

Dehydration-resistant multi-functional hydrogel-based iontophoretic drug delivery for wound healing.

Wearable wound dressing is a promising approach for treating wound infection and promoting healing process. However, conventional wearable dressing methods have the drawback of poor long-term stability due to water loss. Herein, a novel hydrogel patch is fabricated by incorporating phosphoric acid and glycerol to enhance the water retention capacity. This hydrogel exhibits an excellent water retention rate of 97.7% after 7 days under ambient conditions (25 ℃, 50% relative humidity). Consequently, the stretchability, adhesion, and electrical conductivity required for wearable dressing are stabl

Dehydration-Driven Changes in Solid Polymer Electrolytes: Implications for Titanium Anodizing Efficiency.

This study investigates the thermal stability and microstructural evolution of the solid electrolyte medium used in DLyte® dry electropolishing and dry anodizing processes. Samples were thermally aged between 30 °C and 45 °C to simulate Joule heating during industrial operation. Visual and SEM analyses revealed shape deformation and microcrack formation at temperatures above 40 °C, potentially reducing particle packing efficiency and electrolyte performance. Particle size distribution shifted from bimodal to trimodal upon aging, with an overall size reduction of up to 39.5% due to dehydration …
