Epithelial jaw cysts: analysis of 126 Nigerian cases.

One hundred and twenty-six Nigerian cases of epithelial jaw cysts were retrieved from case notes and biopsy records of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Oral Pathology and Oral Biology of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. The cases were analysed for age, sex, site and methods of management. Results show that developmental odontogenic cysts (57.14%) were more common than inflammatory odontogenic cysts (26.94%). Dentigerous cyst (22.22%) was the most common epithelial jaw cyst, followed by radicular cyst (21.43%). Developmental non-odontogenic cysts were mo…

Cytokeratin expression of the odontogenic epithelia in dental follicles and developmental cysts.

The patterns of cytokeratin expression in the epithelium of 5 dental follicles, 7 dentigerous cysts, 5 odontogenic keratocysts, 3 nasopalatine cysts and an epidermoid cyst have been studies using a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The epithelium of dental follicles and of developmental odontogenic cysts strongly expressed keratins 5 and 19 and showed weaker expression of keratins typical of stratified non-cornified and of simple epithelia. Staining with mAbs against the latter keratins varied with the degree of epithelial differentiation. Nasopalatine cysts strongly expressed simple epithelial …

Ectopic tooth in maxillary sinus compressing the nasolacrimal canal: A case report.

RATIONALE: Ectopic tooth is tooth erupting out of normal anatomical position. Ectopic tooth can occur in different positions, such as maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. In this article, we present a rare case of an ectopic tooth with a dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus compressing the nasolacrimal canal. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 8-year-old girl presented with a 2-month history of spontaneous lacrimation in her right eye. When she wept, more tear shed from her right eye than that from the left one. Computed tomographic (CT) imaging showed a huge low-density image containing a tooth in the max…

Odontogenic Cysts.

Odontogenic cysts are epithelial-lined pathologic cavities and surrounded by fibrous connective tissue that originate from odontogenic tissues that occur in tooth-bearing regions of maxilla and mandible. Cystic conditions of the jaw cause bony destruction and may cause resorption or displacement of adjacent teeth. Odontogenic cysts have developmental or inflammatory origins. More cases have been published in the adult age group than the pediatric population. Periapical cyst and dentigerous cysts are frequently reported conditions in dental practice. Histopathologic examination remains the gold…

The Diagnostic Dilemma of an Odontogenic Jaw Lesion in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

This paper presents a case report of a 10-year-old child patient reported with the chief complaint of a painless, hard swelling in the lower right back region of the jaw. The clinical and radiographic examination, including intraoral periapical radiograph (IOPA) and cone-beam CT (CBCT), was performed. Conservative treatment was planned based on the clinical and radiological diagnosis of the cyst. But the histological examination revealed unicystic ameloblastoma (UA). This clinical case of UA, which was misdiagnosed as a combination of a radicular cyst and a dentigerous cyst, is being presented…

A deep learning approach based on YOLO v11 for automatic detection of jaw cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Jaw cysts are frequent radiolucent lesions in dentistry that can present diagnostic difficulties due to their similar radiographic appearance. This study aimed to develop an AI-based detection and classification system for jaw cysts using the YOLO v11 deep learning model on panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 311 panoramic images (211 cystic, 100 normal) were labeled and augmented. The YOLO v11 Small model was trained in both multi-class (distinguishing between dentigerous cysts [DCs], odontogenic keratocysts [OKCs], and radicular cysts [RCs]) and single-class …

Fate of pulpectomized deciduous teeth: Bilateral odontogenic cyst?

Pulpectomy is preferably more conservative treatment option than the extraction of deciduous teeth despite few undesirable consequences of obturating materials of which odontogenic cysts are one. This article aims to report a case of an 11-year-old female child having bilateral odontogenic cysts, i.e., radicular and infected dentigerous cyst followed by pulpectomy of deciduous molars using zinc oxide eugenol which was surgically enucleated and followed up to 6 months until satisfactory healing of bone was observed. The article also emphasizes on the importance of regular follow-up of the pulpe…

[Odontogenic keratocyst in dentigerous position. A clinical case].

Cysts that may develop in the maxillo-mandibular region and adjacent tissues may be of odontogenic origin, non-odontogenic origin, pseudocysts, cysts associated with the maxillary sinus and those developed from the soft tissues. These may vary as to their histogenesis, frequency, behavior and treatment. This article presents the clinical case of an 18-year-old female patient with an initial radiographic diagnosis of dentigerous cyst, which after exploratory punction and surgical removal under general anesthesia yielded a final diagnosis of odontogenic keratocyst. The patient's evolution was sa…
