Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance of Rodents and Vectors for Francisella tularensis Following Outbreaks of Human Tularemia in Georgia.

Tularemia is a re-emerging bacterial zoonosis, broadly distributed across the northern hemisphere. In Georgia, there is a history of human t … amples. The number of isolations was highest in the common vole (M. arvalis; 149 isolates; 32%) and Dermacentor marginatus ticks (132 isolates; 28%); isolation rates ranged between 0-0.91% and 0-0.47%, respectively. Population dynamics of the common vole were not correlated with the isolation rate. Given the history of tularemia re-emergence in Georgia, conti …

Clinical and laboratory evidence of the importance of the tick D. marginatus as a vector of B. burgdorferi in some areas of sporadic Lyme disease in Bulgaria.

56 adult ticks D. marginatus and 38 adult ticks H. punctata were sampled by the flagging method, transferred to the laboratory, dissected and tested for infection with Lyme disease spirochetes. 3 (7.9%) of the adult H. punctata and 2 (3.57%) of the adult D. marginatus were infected with B. burgdorferi (Bb). This report also presents the case of a patient, who developed Lyme disease symptoms after he had been bitten by a D. marginatus tick. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by serological testing and by a biopsy, taken from the patient's skin lesion. The skin biopsy was examined under an ele

Computer simulation of Rocky Mountain spotted fever transmission by the American dog tick (Acari: Ixodidae).

A computer model was developed for simulation of the transmission of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), by the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say). The model of RMSF was combined with a model for population dynamics of the American dog tick and included simulation of infection and transmission of rickettsiae between ticks and host mammals and transmission of RMSF to humans. The model simulated the effects of biotic and environmental variables such as weather, host density, habitat, transovarial transmission, fecundity of infected tick…

Rickettsia rickettsii subsp californica subsp nov, the Etiologic Agent of Pacific Coast Tick Fever.

The etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever, a moderately severe tickborne illness that resembles Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), was first isolated in 1966 from specimens of Dermacentor occidentalis (the Pacific Coast tick) obtained in California. For several decades, this bacterium was identified ambiguously as the unclassified spotted fever group Rickettsia species 364-D, Rickettsia 364, or Rickettsia philipii. However, none of these epithets satisfied criteria of formal bacterial nomenclature. Data developed from mouse serotyping studies performed >45 years ago, and multilocus seq…

Occurrence of ticks and prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in three types of urban biotopes: forests, parks and cemeteries.

The aim of the present study was to compare different urban biotopes for the occurrence of ixodid tick species, for the population density of Ixodes ricinus and for the prevalence rates of two emerging, zoonotic pathogens. Altogether 2455 ticks were collected from the vegetation on 30 places (forests, parks, cemeteries) of Budapest, Hungary. I. ricinus and Haemaphysalis concinna were collected in all three biotope types, but Dermacentor reticulatus only in parks and forests, and D. marginatus only in a forest. Highest population density of I. ricinus was observed in neglected parts of cemeteri…

The root-vole Microtus oeconomus (Pallas, 1776): a new potential reservoir of Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection is a recently emerged tick-borne zoonosis. The bacterium's reservoirs likely comprise cervids, some rumi … s (GenBank accession nos. DQ361024 and DQ361025). Twenty-six root vole (86.6%) hosted ticks, mainly Dermacentor reticulatus larvae and nymphs. Only two rodents were parasitazed by I. ricinus single larvae. These data show the presence of natural infection of A. phagocytophilum among the root-vole M. oeconomus in the Białowieza Primeval Forest ecosystem.

Granulocytic ehrlichiosis and meningitis in a dog.

A 4-year-old male mixed-breed dog from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California was referred because of epistaxis and signs of cervical pain. Dermacentor variabilis ticks were found on the dog at the time of physical examination. Clinicopathologic abnormalities included nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and rare intracytoplasmic morulae within circulating neutrophils. Abnormalities of the CSF included pleocytosis and intracytoplasmic morulae in approximately 9% of neutrophils. Serum antibody titers for Ehrlichia canis (40,960) and Rickettsia rickettsii (5,120) were high, and titer for…

Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses in the Czech Republic.

Theileria equi and Babesia caballi are protozoan agents causing equine piroplasmosis, endemic in countries all over the world. The aim of th … movement of horses across European countries and the expanding occurrence of competent tick vector Dermacentor reticulatus in the Czech Republic create an increasing risk of establishing active foci of equine piroplasmosis in the country.

A case of gynandromorphism in Hyalomma marginatum Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae).

Gynandromorphism is a rare, abnormal phenomenon in which both female and male characteristics are simultaneously displayed in an organism. It has been described in many arthropods, including ticks. This unique occurrence is known within several species of Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Ixodes, and Rhipicephalus. Bipartite protogynander is the most common form of gynandromorphism, whereas gynander intriqué is the rarest type among the ticks. Here, we report the first case of a gynandromorph of Hyalomma marginatum Koch, 1844 collected from a naturally infested human during a ti…

Tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats and their related vectors in Iran.

Haemoparasitic diseases have long been considered as a major problem to efficient sheep and goats production in Iran. Theileriosis due to Theileria hirci and babesiosis due to Babesia ovis and B. motasi are the most pathogenic protozoa. B. crassa, Anaplasma ovis and Eperythrozoon ovis are usually non-pathogenic and do not cause any apparent problem. The major tick genera found on sheep and goats are Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes and rarely Dermacentor distributed in all part of Iran. Our studies indicate that only Hyalomma ticks transmit Theileria species but the others transm…

Heterogeneous viromes in the salivary glands, ovaries, and midguts suggested differential viral transmission advantages of six tick genera.

UNLABELLED: The transmission of tick-borne viruses is associated with the biological functions of tick tissues. This study investigated the viromes in salivary glands, ovaries, and midguts collected from nine tick species of six genera and identified 49 viruses from at least 14 families. A variety of viral abundance and diversity across the three tissues was demonstrated. Ovaries of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus), Rhipicephalus, Dermacentor, and Hyalomma exhibited high viral abundance, suggesting their vertical transmission advantages, while high viral abundance observed in the salivary glands of H…
