Triggered Skin Sensitivity: Understanding Contact Dermatitis.

Dermatitis, the incendiary reaction of the skin to various components, can manifest in various types, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, nummular eczema, seborrhoea, and stasis dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is the most common skin disease in children and has a growing prevalence in recent years. It is characterized by extreme tingling, eczemous skin injuries, dryness of the skin, and a family history of atopic illnesses. Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common, irritating skin disorder caused by allergens and aggravating elements in the environment. It is the most common cause of wor…

Managing Contact Dermatitis Without Patch Testing.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common skin condition caused by contact with an exogenous agent that elicits an inflammatory response. Patch testing (PT) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing ACD. Unfortunately, PT may not be available to some patients due to insurance and financial limitations, contributing to health care disparity and leaving patients with undiagnosed, incompletely managed dermatitis that can have further detrimental health and occupational effects. For other patients, PT is precluded by lack of availability of specialist/expert care, comorbid medications, or

Occupational Contact Dermatitis Caused by Artichokes.

Introduction: Few cases of skin diseases caused by exposure to artichokes have been published. Artichokes contain sesquiterpene lactones, which are known to be sensitizing. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) has also been diagnosed. To our knowledge, no protein contact dermatitis (PCD) has yet been reported to be induced by artichoke. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the different types of contact dermatitis that may be due to occupational exposure to artichokes and the professions concerned. Materials and Methods: We conducted a descriptive study, retrieving data from the Fren

Allergic contact dermatitis in healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis is a common occupational skin disease among healthcare workers (HCWs). AIMS: This study describes causes of allergic contact dermatitis in New Zealand HCWs. METHODS: All HCWs undergoing patch testing between July 2008 and January 2020 at a public hospital patch test clinic and between June 2019 and January 2020 at a private dermatology clinic were included. Data collected included patient demographics, occupation, results of patch testing and pre- and post-patch test diagnoses. RESULTS: Out of 837 patients tested, 67 were HCWs. The mean age of HCWs wa

Occupational Contact Dermatitis: Common Occupational Allergens.

The prevalence of occupational contact dermatitis is estimated to be between 6.7% and 10.6% and can lead to missed work and job loss. Although treatment may provide temporary relief, identifying the culprit allergen may help the clinician counsel on how to avoid or reduce exposure. Some of the most common high-risk occupations for allergic contact dermatitis include agricultural workers, construction workers, health care workers, hairdressers, mechanics, and machinists. In this article, we discuss the common occupational exposures of these high-risk professions, and summarize the common culpri

Systemic Treatments for Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common disease within the family of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions. In more severe cases of allergic contact dermatitis, topical steroids may prove insufficient, and systemic therapeutic agents are often used. Even when systemic therapies such as cyclosporine lead to improvement, withdrawal of these agents is challenging and can lead to undesirable morbidities. Currently, there are no systemic treatments indicated for the treatment of widespread recalcitrant contact dermatitis. This review discusses the targets of in-use off-label systemic medications
