Carbuncle, a collection of interconnected furuncles with multiple pustular openings, is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In this condition, both skin and subcutaneous tissue of the lesion show severe inflammation. It often occurs in immunocompromized patients such as those with diabetes, nephritis, malnutrition, heart failure, hypogammaglobulinemia, exfoliative dermatitis, or pemphigus or those using corticosteroids for long-term. Antibiotics and aggressive debridement are the primary recommended treatments for carbuncle. We report a case of carbuncle that received satisfac

A benign pruritic rash occurs in 10%-15% of persons treated with carbamazepine. A small fraction of them may experience life-threatening dermatological syndromes such as exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). The case of an 18-year-old female suffering from bipolar affective disorder (mania) who was being treated with carbamazepine, lithium, chlorpromazine and benzhexol is presented. After 10 days of treatment, she developed high-grade fever and mucocutaneous manifestations of SJS-TEN overlap. She was treated in hospita

Diphenylhydantoine is a drug frequently used in the treatment of epilepsia. In rare occasions, it produces a mulsisystemic manifestation characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatitis, eosinophilia and desquamative cutaneous eruption, which typically develops within 4-8 weeks after the beginning of the treatment. Mortality rates may reach up to 40% in patients with severe hepatic affection, although the response to steroid therapy is usually frequent. We present the case of a patient which developed a syndrome of hypersensibility to diphenylhydantoine with mononucleosic manifestations, ict

Aztreonam was used in the initial treatment of infection of the urinary tract (23 cases), respiratory tract (17 cases), skin and soft tissue (12 cases), abdominal cavity (three cases), endocarditis (two cases), septicemia (eight cases), and osteomyelitis (two cases). In 26 of 60 evaluable infectious episodes, aztreonam was used alone. Clinical cure was observed in 35 of 60, improvement in 24 of 60, and failure in one of 60 cases. Ten patients developed subsequent superinfection. Aztreonam was well tolerated, although one case of exfoliative dermatitis and one of pseudomembranous colitis occurr

The case of a 28-year-old epileptic woman, treated for 3 months with carbamazepine and who developed jaundice, fever and exfoliative dermatitis is reported. Biological investigations showed an increase in the activity of serum transaminases and alkaline phosphatases as well as in the blood eosinophilic count. Liver biopsy revealed centrolobular necrosis and cholestasis with portal inflammatory infiltrate. Drug challenge was followed by the rapid recurrence of clinical and biological signs. The definitive outcome was favorable. The analysis of the 12 previously published cases, and particularly

Twelve patients with cutaneous and/or eye symptoms caused by practolol have been studied. The morphological appearance of the skin eruptions was psoriasiform in 5, vesiculo-papular in one, and exfoliating dermatitis was seen in 2 patients. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was the only adverse reaction to practolol in one and was present in 3 additional patients. Practolol was found to aggravate existing psoriasis in 3 patients and render it extremely refractory to therapy.

Erythroderma is a skin lesion characterized by redness, swelling, infiltration, and desquamation of greater than 90% of the skin. The etiology of erythroderma is not completely clear and the lesion can be manifestations of various chronic dermatoses, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and toxicodermia, and be represented by erythrodermic mycosis fungoides. The pathogenesis of erythroderma especially at the genetic level remains little studied. Thus, one disease (erythroderma) can be a manifestation of different dermatoses and have similar clinical and histological signs. This pape

A 62-year-old Norwegian male was found to have a leucocytosis (20 X 10(9)/l blood). About 80% of the leucocytes were T-lymphocytes with markedly convoluted, often cerebriforme nuclei. There were generalized pea-sized lymph nodes. The liver was enlarged and was found to be infiltrated with the same type of lymphocytes as were found in the blood. A bone marrow biopsy showed massive infiltration with the same kind of cells. The patient had a non-specific rash, but no generalized exfoliative dermatitis. A double set of markers was found on the T-lymphocytes, with a membrane phenotype T4+ and T8+ o

Erythroderma is the end-stage condition caused by various inflammatory diseases, presenting with widespread generalized coalesced erythema on the trunk and extremities. Erythroderma is not a disease itself, but rather is a symptom expressing erythrodermic condition, which is frequently associated with inguinal lymphadenopathy, chills, and mild fever. The clinical characteristics include sparing the folds of the trunk and extremities (deck-chair sign), and cobblestone-like disseminated grouping prurigo; however, the deck-chair sign is not specific to papulo-erythroderma (Ofuji disease). Erythro

Erythroderma is a dermatological emergency presenting with generalized erythema and scaling involving >90% of the body surface.1 There are various causes of erythroderma, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, phytophotodermatitis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, pemphigus foliaceus, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and drug eruptions.2 However, erythroderma induced by dermatophytosis is encountered rarely. We, here, describe a case of erythroderma developed secondary to extensive dermatophytosis.
