Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacterial agent of the skin flora of patients with seborrheic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease that affects 1-3% of the general population. The Malassezia species has been implicated as the main causative agent; however, the bacterial flora of the skin may also play role in the etiopathogenesis. Therefore, we investigated the most common bacterial agent of the skin flora of patients with seborrheic dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients with seborrheic dermatitis and 50 healthy individuals are included in this study. Sterile cotton swabs were rubbed on the scalp of the participants for bacterial culture. C

A comprehensive pathophysiology of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis - towards a more precise definition of scalp health.

Despite an increasing knowledge of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD), the pathophysiological understanding is still incomplete but suggests a role of Malassezia yeasts in triggering inflammatory and hyper-proliferative epidermal responses. The objective of this report is to review published literature from in vivo studies of D/SD populations to provide a more complete description of overall scalp health. New biomolecular capabilities establish a depth of pathophysiological understanding not previously achievable with traditional means of investigation. Biomarkers representing inflammat

An open-label pilot study of naftifine 1% gel in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.

Topical antifungal treatment is a mainstay of therapy for Seborrehic Dermatitis (SD). Although the amidazole and ciclopyridine antifungals have been extensively studied, few clinical efficacy data are available for topical allylamine therapy in SD. The objective of this open-label exploratory study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of natifine HCl 1% gel applied twice daily for 4 weeks, as topical treatment of moderate SD of the scalp. Nine subjects (5 men, 4 women) with a mean age of 56 (33-81) years with SD of the scalp were enrolled and made 4 visits to the site. At Visit 1 (Week 0),

Clobetasol propionate shampoo 0.05% in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp: results of a pilot study.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD), a common dermatosis associating hyperseborrhea, erythema, itching, and dandruff, has frequent scalp involvement. Malassezia furfur infection seems to play an important role in the condition's etiopathology. Treatment of SD usually consists of corticosteroids or antifungals, such as ketoconazole. The aim of this multicenter, randomized, investigator-blinded, parallel-group pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of clobetasol propionate shampoo 0.05% after different short-contact application times compared with its vehicle and ketoconazole foaming gel 2%

The role of sebaceous gland activity and scalp microfloral metabolism in the etiology of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

Most common scalp flaking disorders show a strong correlation with sebaceous gland (SG) activity. Early SG activity in the neonate results in microfloral colonization and cradle cap. After maternal hormonal control subsides, there is little SG activity until puberty, when the SG turns on under sex hormone control. When the SG activity increases, the present but low Malassezia population has a new food source and proliferates, resulting in the scalp itching and flaking common to greater than 50% of adults. Dry scalp flaking, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis are chronic scalp manifestations o

Correlation of Pityosporum ovale density with clinical severity of seborrheic dermatitis as assessed by a simplified technique.

One hundred patients with facial seborrheic dermatitis and 42 control subjects were studied. The number of periodic acid-Schiff-positive Pityosporum ovale yeast cells in skin scrapings per high-power field were counted and designated 1 + to 4 +. Our data indicate a correlation between the density of P. ovale and the clinical severity of seborrheic dermatitis, both before and after therapy with a precipitated sulfur/salicyclic acid shampoo. The data support the concept that yeast contributes to the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis.

Evaluation of Stress, IL-18, and IL-22 Levels and Their Interrelationships in Patients with Seborrheic Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis with multifactorial pathogenesis. Cytokines such as IL-18 and IL-22 are implicated in inflammatory and stress-related pathways, but their roles in SD remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate serum IL-18 and IL-22 levels in SD patients, evaluate their relationship with disease severity and perceived stress, and explore their potential relevance to SD pathophysiology. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 46 SD patients and 42 healthy controls were included. Disease severity was assessed using the Seborrheic Derm

Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff: An overview of pathogenesis, role of Malassezia spp., and natural treatment approaches.

Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) and dandruff are prevalent dermatological disorders that primarily affect the sebaceous glands and have significant implications for adults and children. While chronic skin lesions characterise SD, dandruff is characterised by excessive scalp flaking, pruritus, and erythema. Despite their overlapping clinical manifestations, these conditions differ in their underlying pathophysiology, with overgrowth of Malassezia species (spp.) emerging as a central pathogenic factor in both. Malassezia, a commensal yeast naturally residing on the skin, has been implicated in exacer
