Inflammatory rhabdomyoblastic tumor (IRMT) is a rare, recently described skeletal muscle neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential. We report an unusual tumor in the right arm of a 5-year-old boy, which is the first case of a pediatric IRMT. Immunohistochemically, most cells in the tumor were positive for CD163 and CD68 staining. The neoplastic cells themselves showed a skeletal muscle phenotype with a diffuse expression of desmin and a focal expression of myoD1. Mitotic activity was low (1/10 HPF), and no necrosis was observed.

Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. The most often symptoms of this disease are dyspnoe and chest wall pain, which is often associated with pleural effusion. We present 35-years old woman with 5 epizodes of pneumothorax during 3 years (4 of right side and 1-bilateral) in whom bilateral pleurodesis was performed. Specimens of lung and pleurae were examinated. We analysed the cytoskeletal proteins and extracellular matrix components of in vitro cultured BMSC both in resting state and after activation with IFN gamma and TNF alpha, using an immunoperoxidase procedure. BMSC expressed fibronectin, alpha-actin, beta-tubulin, vimentin and vinculin while cytokeratinpan, GFAP, neurofilament, desmin and laminin were not expressed. This pattern of expression was not affected by addition of TNF alpha and IFN gamma, but differs from human tonsil stromal cells for laminin expression and alpha-actin localization.

A case of gestational implantation upon a submucosal cellular leiomyoma in a 43-year-old woman is presented. The resulting histologic picture resembled placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT). In immunoperoxidase studies, tumor cells were positive for desmin and vimentin and negative for human placental lactogen and human chorionic gonadotropin, thus supporting a smooth muscle origin. This case demonstrates an unusual histological picture occurring in a setting that might lead to diagnostic confusion and is one in which immunohistochemical evaluation proved to be of great utility.

Carcinosarcomas are rare, highly aggressive neoplasms composed of a combination of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. These tumors represent a paradigmatic field for the study of intratumor heterogeneity.
