This research aimed to explore the COVID-19 infection in the prognosis of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), as well as analyzed the risk factors of the poor prognosis. This present prospective observational cohort study enrolled 136 patients with ICH who were admitted in our hospital during May 2020 to July 2022. The diagnosis of COVID-19 was confirmed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. All patients were collected demographic and clinical data and were followed up for 3 months, and we used the modified Rankin scale (mRS) to assess the prognosis of ICH patients, mRS

BACKGROUND: The respiratory system involvement is the most common presentation of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, other organs including the central nervous system (CNS) could be affected by the virus. Strokes, seizures, change in mental status, and encephalitis have been reported as the neurological manifestation of the disease. We hypothesized that COVID-19 could predispose younger patients to spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The present study aimed to investigate whether COVID-19 has any relationship with the occurrence of spontaneous ICH in young or not.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot study was to determine how sleep quality, glycemic control, sleepiness, fatigue, and depression differ in persons with type 2 diabetes with and without restless legs syndrome (RLS). RESEARCH DESIGNS/METHODS: The design was a descriptive, case-control study of participants with type 2 diabetes with and without RLS at the University of Pennsylvania, Rodebaugh Diabetes Center. Thirty-nine participants (adults over 21 years of age who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had a HbA1c in the last 3 months) were stratified based on RLS diagnostic criteria.

BACKGROUND: Neurological manifestations caused by hypoglycemia range from reversible focal deficits and transient encephalopathy to irreversible coma or death. Recently, high signal intensity lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were reported in adults experiencing hypoglycemia. However, patients presenting with agraphia are rare.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: We examined a 17-year-old left-handed female patient with type 1 diabetes who exhibited transient left agraphia with a reversible splenium lesion of the corpus callosum on diffusion-weig

Ultimately traceable to neural glucose deprivation, symptoms of hypoglycemia include neurogenic (autonomic) and neuroglycopenic symptoms. Neurogenic symptoms (tremulousness, palpitations, anxiety, sweating, hunger, paresthesias) are the results of the perception of physiologic changes caused by the autonomic nervous system's response to hypoglycemia. Neuroglycopenic symptoms (confusion, sensation of warmth, weakness or fatigue, severe cognitive failure, seizure, coma) are the results of brain glucose deprivation itself. Glycemic thresholds for symptoms of hypoglycemia shift to lower plasma glu

People with diabetes account for nearly one-fifth of all inpatients in English and Welsh hospitals; of these, up to 90% are admitted as an emergency. Most are admitted for a reason other than diabetes with only 8% requiring admission for a diabetes-specific cause. Healthcare professionals working in emergency departments experience numerous clinical challenges, notwithstanding the need to know whether each individual with diabetes requires urgent admission. This document has been developed and written by experts in the field, and reviewed by the parent organizations of the Joint British Diabet

BACKGROUND: Acute cholangitis (AC) is a common emergency with a significant mortality risk. The Tokyo Guidelines (TG) provide recommendations for diagnosis, severity stratification, and management of AC. However, validation of the TG remains poor. This study aims to validate TG07, TG13, and TG18 criteria and identify predictors of in-hospital mortality in patients with AC.
METHODS: This is a retrospective audit of patients with a discharge diagnosis of AC in the year 2016. Demographic, clinical, investigation, management and mortality data were documented. We performed a multinomial logistic

Fifty-nine patients with both clinical evidence of thyroid dysfunction and patent diabetes mellitus were investigated in our diabetology department. Patients with euthyroid goitre and iatrogenic or pituitary hypothyroidism were excluded from the study. Among the 45 diabetics with hyperthyroidism, 32 had Graves' disease and 13 had toxic adenoma; 71% were insulin-treated. Hyperthyroidism had passed unnoticed in 7 of these 32 patients because fatigue and loss of weight, which initially were the predominant or sole symptoms, are extremely frequent in uncontrolled diabetes. These symptoms, as well

Bilateral subdural hematomas occurring simultaneously with subarachnoid hemorrhage in a traumatic context are rare and pose considerable diagnostic challenges. Comorbidities such as diabetes and HIV may further worsen prognosis and complicate management. This case underscores the vital importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary care in patients with subacute subdural hematomas and subarachnoid hemorrhage, particularly when compounded by comorbidities in resource‑limited settings. We report the case of a 44-year-old housewife who was diabetic and living with HIV. She presented with sev

BACKGROUND: Hypoglycaemia is a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels fall below 3.9 mmol/L (70 mg/dL), while hypoglycaemic coma is usually associated with glycaemia around 1.1 mmol/L (20 mg/dL). Recurrent severe hypoglycaemia may result in permanent neurological disorders and also has a negative impact on the cardiovascular system.
AIM: To evaluate the causes of severe hypoglycaemia in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes and coexistence of cardiovascular history.
METHODS: We analysed retrospectively the history of 33 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes and coexistence of cardio

Non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (NASAH) is defined as bleeding into the subarachnoid space without an identifiable aneurysm. In patients with long-standing diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic microvascular damage may contribute to vascular fragility and hemorrhage. Emerging evidence suggests a possible association between NASAH and diabetes, particularly through microangiopathic mechanisms. We report the case of a 40-year-old female patient with a 14-year history of poorly controlled Type 1 DM (T1DM) who presented with sudden-onset severe occipital headache, neck stiffness, and vomiting. On

Two patients with a bipolar disorder, a woman aged 56 and a woman aged 68, who had used lithium for more than 30 years, were seen with side effects from this medication. Both patients were treated by their general practitioner and had not visited a psychiatrist for many years. The first patient had a chronic lithium intoxication with cerebellar signs and eventually coma, diabetes insipidus, hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism and psoriasis. After 6 weeks of treatment in the intensive-care unit she made a good recovery. The second patient had several lithium side effects. She was diagnosed wit

As the incidence of subdural hematoma is increasing, it is important to understand symptomatology and clinical variables associated with treatment outcomes and mortality in this population; patients with subdural hematoma were selected from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database between 2016 and 2020 using International Classification of Disease 10th Edition (ICD10) codes. Moderate-to-severe subdural hematoma patients were identified using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Multivariate regression was first used to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality and then beta coefficients were u
