Fecal incontinence presents a major challenge in the comprehensive nursing care of acutely and critically ill patients. When manifested as diarrhea, the effects of fecal incontinence can range from mild (superficial skin irritation) to profound (severe perineal dermatitis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and sepsis). Fecal incontinence has many etiologies and risk factors. These include damage to the anal sphincter or pelvic floor, liquid stool consistency, abnormal colonic transport, and decreased intestinal capacity. To avoid or minimize complications, the cause of diarrhea should be add

A 9-day-old boy was brought to the emergency department by his mother. The infant had been doing well until his most recent diaper change when his mother noticed a rash around the umbilicus, genitalia, and anus. The infant was born at term via spontaneous vaginal delivery. The pregnancy was uncomplicated; the infant's mother was group B strep negative. Following a routine postpartum course, the infant underwent an elective circumcision before hospital discharge on his second day of life. There were no interval reports of irritability, poor feeding, fevers, vomiting, or changes in urine or stoo

Within hours of accidental instillation of a popular diaper rash protector spray, a 23 day old male developed severe chemical pneumonitis, acute respiratory failure and pneumomediastinum. Despite optimal ventilatory management, the unconventional use of frequent bronchial saline lavages was necessary to maintain oxygenation and ventilation. The only listed active ingredient, 10% dimethicone was a non-toxic inhalant, but the undisclosed inactive ingredients included mineral oil and balsam of peru which may cause chemical pneumonitis and allergic reactions. This case serves as a warning on OTC p…

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, several reports around the world indicated that the novel coronavirus could be associated with specific dermatologic manifestations. Among earlier articles, encountered features included erythematous maculopapular exanthems, chilblains-like acral skin lesions, vesicular, and urticarial rashes. We describe the first case of Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis in a 17-month-old girl with a confirmed COVID-19 infection. This article may serve to expand the knowledge of the diverse clinical features of COVID-19 infection, particularly among the pediatric pop

OBJECTIVE: To define the incidence of perianal dermatitis (PD) and determine the usage pattern and cost efficacy of diaper products among neonates admitted to a level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) including those with a diagnosis of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study to evaluate neonates with PD based on number of orders for Aquaphor, Bagbalm, Desitin, Flanders, or Nystatin. Various demographic and clinical parameters were recorded. Usage patterns of these five products were analyzed, and their costs estimated. Subgroup analysis was performed am

OBJECTIVE: To study whether disposable diapers decrease the incidence of neonatal infections compared with cloth diapers in a level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
METHOD AND MATERIAL: All neonates admitted to the NICU and having duration of stay >48 h were enrolled. Those babies with signs and symptoms of infection were screened with septic screen and/or blood culture.
RESULTS: The primary outcome of the study was incidence of probable sepsis. Of 253 babies enrolled in the study period, probable sepsis was present in 101 (39.9%) infants in the total study group and was higher in clo

Application of salt to the newborn's skin is a common traditional child care custom in Turkey. We present an infant with multiple ulcerating scrotal lesions due to prolonged salt exposure in the diaper area. Scrotal ulcers associated with salting have not been described previously.

Five observations of infants with transcutaneous intoxication by 6,3 p. 100 hexachlorophene contaminated talcum powder are reported. The diaper dermatitis is particular because of its topography (red pants shape), of its sudden occurring, of its papyraceous aspect evoking caustic origin, and of its association with severe encephalopathy. The neurological signs start with epileptic fits leading rapidly to coma. Prognosis is serious leading either to death or to paraplegia. Enquiry on that epidemic shows that mortality raised up to 18 p. 100. The neurological signs with oedematous degeneration o

We herein present a 4 year-old boy with Waardenburg-Shah syndrome who developed Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis following a total colectomy and ileoanal anastomosis procedure for Hirschsprung disease. The diagnosis was made according to history and typical clinical findings. Complete resolution of the recalcitrant lesions after an ileostomy procedure supported the diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of being familiar with the predisposing factors and clinical presentation of this rare and severe form of chronic irritant dermatitis, since it may easily be misdiagnosed as other dise

Skin care practices play an important role in the health of well newborns and hospitalized neonates. Fortunately, for many aspects of neonatal skin care, there exist evidence- or consensus-based recommendations to guide best practices. Based on our review of the recent medical literature, we include in this manuscript the current recommendations regarding neonatal skin cleansing and antisepsis; umbilical cord care; use of emollients; and prevention of diaper dermatitis. In addition, we review the recommended practices for preventing and treating pressure ulcers, wounds, and other skin injuries
