Children With Celiac Disease Consume Specific Food Additives More Frequently Compared to Children Without Celiac Disease.

BACKGROUND: Gluten-free foods often contain food additives to improve palatability, but the long-term effects on the human gastrointestinal tract are not well known. AIMS: This study aimed to quantify frequency of food additive exposure in children with and without celiac disease (CD). METHODS: Children with and without CD were enrolled and demographic data and three-day diet records were obtained. Foods were classified as gluten-free products (GFP) and "processed food", and were evaluated for presence of select food additives: polysorbate 80, carboxymethylcellulose, xanthan gum, guar gum, s…

Laparoscopic rectopexy using mesh fixation with a spiked chromium staple.

UNLABELLED: Abdominal rectopexy for patients with rectal prolapse is well suited for performance laparoscopically because no resection or anastomosis is necessary, with potential benefits being a decrease in postoperative pain, better cosmesis, and an earlier return to normal activity. PURPOSE: Objectives of this study were to determine the feasibility of laparoscopic abdominal rectopexy using a solitary spiked chromium staple to fix the mesh to the sacrum and to compare initial results with consecutive previous abdominal rectopexies (historical control study). METHODS: Duration of operation

The influence of dietary copper on reproduction, growth and the cardiovascular system in Swiss-Webster female mice.

One hundred forty pubertal Swiss-Webster female mice (Mus musculus) were assigned randomly to a purified diet modified to contain 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 ppm copper as copper carbonate (Diets 1 thru 6, respectively). Diet 7 was a commercial rodent laboratory diet containing 11 ppm copper. Following 60 days of prefeeding, the breeding regimen was initiated by introducing a proven breeder male into each cage of 10 females in the afternoon and removing them the next morning. The breeding regimen was conducted for 28 days and females were either sacrificed at 24 or 96 hours following detection of a va

Interaction effect of whole wheat feeding and mannanoligosaccharides supplementation on growth performance, haematological indices and caecal microbiota of cockerel chicks.

The interaction effect of whole wheat feeding and mannanoligosaccharides supplementation on growth performance, haematological indices and caecal microbiota of cockerel chicks were investigated using 250-day-old cockerel chicks previously reared for 7 days pre-experimental period. Birds were fed with commercial chick mash during the pre-experimental period. At the expiration of this period, 192 chicks were selected on weight equalization basis and assigned into 24 pens. Each treatment consisted of six pens, while each pen housed eight birds. Four wheat-soya bean-based experimental diets were f

Cutaneous adverse food reactions in cats: retrospective evaluation of 17 cases in a dermatology referral population (2001-2011).

OBJECTIVE: To better characterise cutaneous adverse food reactions (AFR) in cats, including the diagnostic challenges. DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation of cases presenting to a dermatology referral service. METHODS: Cats were identified by a computerised medical record search. AFR was confirmed by clear deterioration on normal food re-challenge after completing an elimination diet, followed by improvement returning to the test diet. Prevalence, and breed, sex or age predispositions were compared with the base referral population. Patient records were reviewed for historical features, clinica

Impaired intestinal afferent nerve satiety signalling and vagal afferent excitability in diet induced obesity in the mouse.

Gastrointestinal vagal afferents transmit satiety signals to the brain via both chemical and mechanical mechanisms. There is indirect evidence that these signals may be attenuated in obesity. We hypothesized that responses to satiety mediators and distension of the gut would be attenuated after induction of diet induced obesity. Obesity was induced by feeding a high fat diet (60% kcal from fat). Low fat fed mice (10% kcal from fat) served as a control. High fat fed mice were obese, with increased visceral fat, but were not hyperglycaemic. Recordings from jejunal afferents demonstrated attenuat

Growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing male lambs fed barberry pomace-containing diets.

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) fruits contain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects. The inclusion of barberry pomace (BP) in finishing diets could potentially enhance growth performance and carcass characteristics of sheep. To test this hypothesis, 21 male Balouchi lambs (24.5 ± 4 kg initial live weight; 5 ± 0.6 months of age) were randomly assigned to three BP-containing experimental diets to determine their effects on feed intake, live weight gain and carcass characteristics. The experimental diets were formulated to meet nutrient requirements for a

Can a Mediterranean diet reduce the effects of lipodystrophy syndrome in people living with HIV? A pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV and highly active antiretroviral therapies have been associated with changes in individuals' lipid profiles and fat distribution (lipodystrophy). A pilot study was conducted for a randomised controlled trial to evaluate whether lipodystrophy in HIV patients can be controlled by adopting the low-fat and low-cholesterol diet or the modified Mediterranean diet. METHODS: Forty-eight HIV patients were randomised into two diet groups. Thirty-six (75%) completed the 1-year pilot study with regular dietetic consultations, during which time lipid levels, weight, body mass index and fat

Call category classification of the isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations emitted by BTBR T+Itpr3tf/J mouse pups exposed to different perinatal diets.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in social communication and repetitive behaviors/restricted interests that may be diagnosed as early as 2 years of age. This suggests that the pathology underlying the disorder is present during early development, including gestation. This early developmental period is affected by maternal nutrition. The effects of a perinatal high fat diet on neonatal ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were examined in the BTBR mouse model of ASD, and C57BL/6J mice. Three diets with varied levels of fats and carbohydrates were given to dams beginning 2

A 4-week toxicity study of methionine in male rats.

To examine 4-week toxicity of l-methionine (methionine), 5-week-old Fisher strain male rats were fed on diets containing 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.9, 2.7 (w/w) of added methionine. Although no deaths were recorded, the highest dose of methionine (2.7% [w/w] of diet) reduced food intake and significantly suppressed growth rate. Growth suppression was characterized by an increase in hemolysis, splenic, and hepatic accumulation of hemosiderin, hemolytic anemia, and promotion of hematopoiesis. Other changes observed in the highest methionine intake group were a decrease in white blood cell count, thymus atro

Effectiveness of nystatin in polysymptomatic patients. A randomized, double-blind trial with nystatin versus placebo in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Antifungal therapy has been claimed to be effective in polysymptomatic patients with diffuse symptoms from multiple body systems and even well defined diseases, traditionally not related to fungi. Hypersensitivity to fungus proteins and mycotoxins has been proposed as the cause. METHODS: We conducted a 4-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 116 individuals selected by a 7-item questionnaire to determine whether the antifungal agent nystatin given orally was superior to placebo. At the onset of the study, the patients were free to select either their regular d

Calorie and protein malnutrition in chronic murine schistosomiasis mansoni: effect on the parasite and the host.

The effects of diets containing 8% and 4% protein and of 50% calorie-deficient diets on the host, the parasite, and the parameters of disease in chronic hepatosplenic schistosomiasis were studied in mice that were infected for 20 weeks with Schistosoma mansoni. Controls consisted of uninfected mice of the same size and age maintained on a balanced 20% protein diet. Each of four corresponding dietary groups of infected and uninfected animals was fed on its assigned diet from the 20th to the 24th week of infection. Between the 24th and the 28th week of infection, all groups were nutritionally re

The use of vitamin A-deficient diets and jugular vein ligation to increase intracranial pressure in chickens (Gallus gallus).

A technique was developed to record intracranial cerebrospinal fluid pressure (iCSFp) in chicks and mature chickens. Using that procedure, 2 methods were found to effect a significant elevation in intracranial pressure: 1) feeding a purified diet to roosters for 40 d containing 25% of the bird's requirement for vitamin A, and 2) ligating both jugular veins in birds. The purified diet significantly reduced plasma retinol levels from 1.080 to 0.046 microg/mL, and iCSFp was significantly elevated from 63.0 to 106.0 mmH2O (P < or = 0.05). Two limitations for using hypovitaminosis A diets were capi

A non-terminal surgical procedure for chronic collection of exocrine pancreatic secretions from unrestrained dogs (Canis familiaris).

The ability of dogs to adaptively modulate secretion by the exocrine pancreas to match changes in the amounts and sources of macronutrients is poorly understood. We evaluated the use of re-entrant pancreatic catheters as a non-terminal, temporary approach for the chronic collection of exocrine pancreatic secretion using unrestrained dogs fed diets differing in composition. Re-entrant catheters were surgically placed in the accessory pancreatic duct of two adult mongrel dogs. Secretions were collected for 40 days, during which the dogs were fed three diets with different amounts and sources of

Effects of homeopathic remedy supplementation on performance, blood parameters, and behavior of pigs under vaccination and regrouping stress conditions.

In the modern swine production systems, pigs are often challenged with regrouping and vaccination, which may negatively affect growth performance and behavior of pigs. The objective was to test the hypothesis that a supplemental homeopathic remedy enhances growth performance in nursery pigs by improving hematological parameters and reducing stress from vaccination and regrouping. In a 28-day feeding experiment, 94 pigs with an initial mean body weight of 16.5 kg (SD = 1.7) were allotted to three dietary treatments. The basal diet was mainly based on corn, soybean meal, fish meal, and dried whe

Cardiovascular health and gender minority stress in transgender and gender diverse adults: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people may take gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) to affirm their gender identity and improve quality of life. The cardiovascular health (CVH) impacts of GAHT are not well described. TGD individuals may also experience gender minority stress (GMS), typically caused by discrimination and transphobia, which may adversely affect CVH. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the CVH and gender minority stress of TGD adults receiving GAHT. METHODS: This observational study was approved by the Emory University Institutional Review Board. TGD ad
